MODULE NO. 1
TOPIC: REVIEW OF FACTORIZATION

Dear parents,

In this time of health pandemic, we would be glad if you could help us facilitate this lesson to our learners to be able to
continue his/her holistic development. Thank you and we will heal and journey as one.

School Administration

I. LEARNING TARGET:
In this lesson, the learners will be able to;
1. review the factorization of polynomials
2.factor the polynomials

II. LESSON PROPER:

REVIEW ON FACTORIZATION
Example: factorize x2+4x-5

Solution:
Step 1: factor the x2. It can be written as (x)(x).
Step 2: write all the factors of -5.
Factors are: (-1,5),(-5,1)
Step 3: get the factor of -5 that can give a sum of positive 4 and a product of negative 5.

then we have,
x 2+4x-5
(x-1)(x+5)

Checking: use the foil method of multiplication.

Solution: x-1
x+5
5x-5
x2 – x___
x2+ 4x – 5

Example 2: factorize 3x2+4x+1

solution:
3x2+4x+1 factor
(3x+1)(x+1) think of factors of -1 that when you multiply by 3x it can give a product of 4x.

Checking: using the foil method of multiplication

(3x+1)(x+1)
=3x2+3x+x+1
=3x2+4x+1

***for more examples, open you mathematics 9 book on page 110 to 111. Read and understand the topic review of
factorization***
III. ACTIVITY: COMPLETE SOLUTION
A. Factor the quadratic polynomials.

1. x2-10x+24 2. x 2-7x+10 3. x 2-10x+21

MODULE NO.2
TOPIC: SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION: COMPLETING THE SQUARES

Dear parents,

In this time of health pandemic, we would be glad if you could help us facilitate this lesson to our learners to be able to
continue his/her holistic development. Thank you and we will heal and journey as one.

School Administration

I. LEARNING TARGET:
In this lesson, the learners will be able to;
1. follow the steps in completing the square
2. solve quadratic equation by completing the square

II. LESSON PROPER:

SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION: COMPLETING THE SQUARES
Extracting square roots and factoring are usually used to solve quadratic equations of the form ax 2−c=0. If the
factors of the quadratic expression of ax 2 +bx +c=0 are determined, then it is more convenient to use factoring to solve
it.
Another method of solving quadratic equation is by completing the square. This method involves transforming
the quadratic equation ax 2 +bx +c=0 into the form( x−h )2=k , where k ≥ 0. Can you tell why the value of k should be
positive.

Example:
1. Solve each by completing the square
a. x 2+ 8 x+2=0
2
x + 8 x=−2 - subtract 2 from the both sides
2
x + 8 x+16=−2+16 - complete the square by adding 16 on the sides
( x +4 )2=14 - factor
x +8=± √ 14 - apply the square root principle
x=−4 ± √14 - subtract 4 from both sides

b. x 2−2 x−12=0
2
x + 2 x=12
2
x −2 x+1=12+ 1
( x−1 )2=13
x−1=± √ 13
x=1 ± √13
x=1+ √ 13∨x=1−√ 13

***for more examples, open you mathematics 9 book on page 120 to 123. Read and understand the topic solving
quadratic equations: completing the square***
III. ACTIVITY: COMPLETE SOLUTION
A. Solve the quadratic equations by completing the squares.
1. x 2+ 4 x=12 2. 3 x 2 +2 x−5 3. x 2−16 x +64
