ПЕРЕДМОВА
Цей посібник призначений, насамперед, для студентів вищих
навчальних закладів культури і мистецтв, де готують фахівців з
музичного мистецтва, музичної педагогіки та виховання,
театрального мистецтва, режисури масових свят, хореографії та
кіно- і телемистецтва. Мета посібника – сприяти формуванню у
студентів умінь і навичок читання англомовних фахових текстів
та здатності до їх критичного аналізу у вигляді дискусій,
доповідей, письмових повідомлень. Передбачається, що
формування навичок читання буде супроводжуватися розвитком
комунікативних компетенцій говоріння, аудіювання й письма
(функціонально обмежених майбутніми професійними
потребами).
Специфіка вищих навчальних закладів культури і мистецтв
зумовлює виразний професійно-орієнтований та країнознавчий
підхід до вивчення іноземної мови. Тому завданням посібника є
також дати студентам певну професійну інформацію та знання з
культури країн – можливих об’єктів їхньої майбутньої діяльності.
Матеріали для підручника підбиралися відповідно до
принципів доцільності, актуальності і професійної цікавості.
Структурно він складається з 8 уроків (Lessons). Текстовий
матеріал підібрано із сучасних англомовних джерел (друкованих
та електронних). Автентичність текстів максимально збережена;
лише в деяких випадках автори вдавалися до незначних спрощень
та адаптації. Малознайомі реалії та важкі для розуміння звороти
позначаються зірочкою (*) і коментуються у примітках до тексту
(Notes on the text). Назви джерел подаються в дужках наприкінці
кожного тексту.
Навчальний матеріал підручника подано відповідно до
дидактичних принципів “від простого до складного” та
повторюваності лексичних елементів, термінології і граматичних
явищ. Теми читання та професійного спілкування – "Тенденції
розвитку та видатні виконавці популярної музики", "Масові шоу,
фестивалі та конкурси", "Мистецтво телебачення та його
проблеми", "Інструментальна музика", "Підготовка фахівців з
театрального мистецтва та театральні фестивалі", "Танець:
мистецтво чи розвага?", "Вокальна музика", "Здійсни свою мрію:
як стати зіркою".
Кожний урок містить лексико-граматичний, текстовий
матеріали та теми для обговорення. Текстовий матеріал
складається з текстів трьох видів: текст "А"– аналітичне читання
для аудиторної роботи; текст "В" – для самостійної роботи в
аудиторії, "С" – для самостійної роботи вдома. На початку
кожного уроку (Lesson) до тексту "А" наводяться списки активних
слів та словосполучень (Essential Vocabulary) з прикладами в
реченнях, термінологія з тексту (Terminology) та вправи на
вивчення і закріплення активної лексики і термінології, зокрема
на словотвір (Word Formation) та утворення словосполучень
(Word Combination). Бажано, щоб читанню передували усна
презентація і сприйняття на слух слова (словосполучення). Далі
на прикладах базових моделей і вправ пропонується граматичний
матеріал, релевантний для даного уроку. Тексти супроводжуються
вправами на лексико-граматичні та стилістичні проблеми
перекладу. Наприкінці кожного уроку пропонуються теми для
обговорення й дискусій за матеріалами тексту.
Робота над матеріалами кожного уроку розрахована на 4
практичні заняття. На першому занятті вводиться лексико-
граматичний матеріал з метою підготовки до роботи з текстом
"А". На другому занятті студенти працюють з текстом "А". Третє
заняття передбачає самостійну роботу студентів з текстом "В".
Четверте заняття можна присвятити обговоренню та дискусії за
матеріалами тексту "С". Кожний такий блок завершується
написанням контрольної роботи в аудиторії.
Послідовність вивчення лінгвістичного й навчального
матеріалу закладено в самій структурі посібника. Робота з текстом
"А" передбачає певний підготовчий етап. Спочатку засвоюються
активна лексика й термінологія. Рекомендуємо студентам
виконувати всі передбачені посібником передтекстові вправи.
Граматику вивчають (повторюють) за допомогою лексико-
граматичних моделей, на підставі яких студенти самостійно
виводять правила й закріплюють їх, виконуючи відповідні вправи.
Аналогічно працюють і з моделями словотвору.
Вправи на переклад рідною мовою можна робити усно, вправи
на переклад англійською – тільки письмово.
Активну лексику, термінологію та лексико-граматичні моделі
слід заучувати напам’ять. Бажано запам’ятовувати й зразки
вживання активної лексики, наведені в підручнику.
Лише після цього можна переходити до текстового матеріалу
(аналітичне читання). Над текстом працюють за принципом “від
тексту до слова”. Пропонуємо таку послідовність роботи з
текстом: Переглянути текст в цілому. – Ознайомитися з
передтекстовими завданнями. – Здобути максимум інформації з
тексту (усно), звертаючи увагу на коментарі та переклад реалій. –
Виконати перед- і післятекстові вправи. – Ознайомитися з
правилами перекладу, якщо такі наведені в уроку. – Зробити
письмовий переклад тексту рідною мовою, зважаючи на стиль
перекладу. – Зробити зворотний переклад і зіставити його з
оригіналом (для студентів з високим рівнем підготовки).
Додаткові тексти "В" та "С" призначені для синтетичного
самостійного читання, тобто наголос робиться на здобуванні
фахової і країнознавчої інформації. Допускається користування
словником (для розуміння ключових слів). За матеріалами
додаткового читання студент може зробити доповідь,
повідомлення, реферат.
Останній етап роботи в кожному уроку – теми для дискусії за
матеріалами тексту. Бажано починати з письмових відповідей на
проблемні запитання і завершити усною дискусією в аудиторії.
Усі вправи розраховані на самостійну роботу студента –
індивідуальну (в аудиторії і вдома) та дрібногрупову. Дискусії
доцільно проводити всім класом або дрібними групами. Викладач
виконує радше консультативні, організаційні, контрольні функції.
Природно, що перший посібник такого роду не позбавлений
упущень, ї тому автори будуть вдячні за кожне зауваження і
доповнення.

Music Industry and Musical Technology

Great changes in musical technology led to a revival of rock and


pop during the 1980s. Video, compact discs and computers all became
important in the pop industry. Thanks to video, every single suddenly
had its own three-minute film. Thanks to compact discs, the quality of
recorded sound was better than ever. Thanks to computers it was
possible to play and record thousands of new sounds.
The pop industry uses video in several ways. In the beginning it
was just used to promote singles. Now you can buy video albums,
VCDs and DVDs which play music and show video film at the same
time. VCRs appear in millions of homes. Music video has become an
important means of introducing new performers. Then there are the
giant video screens at concerts and at discos. These show the whole
audience what’s happening on the stage or on the dance floor.
Entertainer Michael Jackson was one of the first to realize the
importance of new musical technology. In 1982 he released Thriller,
which became the biggest-selling album in history, and established a
trend in which record companies relied upon video to make profit.
Jackson's success contributed greatly to the promotional value of
music videos. After that it became very difficult for record companies
to achieve hit records without intensively playing the music on the air
or on music-video networks.
Other new technologies, including the use of fiber-optic* cables
and satellite transmissions, have changed the way people get access to
popular music. Advances in recording-studio technology, digital
recording equipment, and synthesis techniques have allowed musicians
and music engineers to create new sound effects. Now producers take
greater control over the final product than ever before. In live concerts,
miniaturized amplification equipment has been introduced to create the
illusion of direct communication between the audience and the
performers. In contrast, the Lo-Fi movement developed in the 1990s as
a reaction against the Hi-Fi production values of mainstream popular
music. This movement stresses primitive, low-fidelity recording
techniques that reflect those used in the 1950s for rockabilly and in the
1970s for punk rock.
The market for popular music expanded with Music Television
(MTV). This advertising-supported cable television network is the first
network to broadcast music videos regularly. The network was
founded in 1981 as an operation of MTV Networks with investments
from such companies as Warner Communications and American
Express. MTV's combination of music videos, youthful video jockeys,
commentaries, promotion of special rock concerts, and news and
documentaries about bands and performers established the network's
popularity with young viewers, and it became a leading promoter of
new rock music and rock musicians. In 1992 both presidential
candidate Bill Clinton and his running mate* Al Gore appeared
separately on two MTV programs in an effort to reach young voters.
Music videos for both audio recordings and some motion-picture
soundtracks are often made with the MTV viewer market in mind*.
MTV's overseas affiliates make the network's programming available
in Europe, Asia, Central and South America, and Africa.
After MTV's programming changed to include more heavy metal
and rap music, MTV Networks launched a second network, Video Hits
1 (VH-1), in 1985. VH-1 features more popular music than MTV.
MTV Networks also owns Nickelodeon, a cable channel broadcasting

From the History of Rock & Pop

''Pop' is short for 'popular' and there has always been popular
music. But until the 1950s there wasn't any style of music just for
young people. That all changed when rock and roll began. Since then,
hundreds of styles and stars have come and gone. Musical technology
has changed a lot too. Here, we look at some highlights* of rock and
pop's history.
The '50s. Rock and roll began in America. Some of its big stars
were black – for example Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Little
Richard. They brought traditional 'rhythm and blues' to a big new TV
audience. Then, white singers began to copy them. One of the first was
Bill Haley. He and his band, The Comets, recorded an early rock and
roll classic, 'Rock Around the Clock'. There were other white 'rockers',
too, like Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. But the most popular of
them all was Elvis Aron Presley.
Elvis wasn't like the American singers of the '40s and early '50s.
He wasn't neat, sweet and safe. He was rough, tough and dangerous.
His music was dangerous, too. He called himself 'The King of Rock
and Roll' and played an electric guitar. Teenagers all over the world
fell in love with this new style. They bought millions of his records.
Suddenly the younger generation didn't just have money, cars and
televisions – they had a hero, too.
The '60s. Pop exploded in the '60s. After Elvis, hundreds of new
groups and singers appeared. In Britain, two groups quickly became
more popular than all the others. One was the Rolling Stones. They
played hard, aggressive rock and roll. The other group played a
mixture of rock and pop. Their name was the Beatles.
Together, the Beatles and the Stones led a British 'invasion' of the
American charts*. Thanks to them, pop became Transatlantic.
But what was happening in America during the '60s? Well, in
Detroit, producer Berry Gordy started a new record label – Motown.
Stars on the Motown included Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie
Wonder and the Jackson Five (including the youngest of the Jackson
brothers, Michael).
Singers and songwriters were also popular . These were stars who
mixed folk music with rock and pop styles. Bob Dylan was the most
famous, but there were lots of others too – like Joan Baez and James
Taylor.
Finally, there was 'hippy' rock. This was the time of 'flower power'
and protests against the Vietnam War. It was also the time when rock
festivals became important. The biggest, 1n 1969, was held on a farm
in New York State.
The '70s. Two groups show the different sides of 70’s pop – Abba
and The Sex Pistols. Sweden’s Abba worked with the latest
technology. Their songs were popular with people from 8 to 80. They
were rich. They made videos. They were, in fact, superstars
entertainers. And they weren’t alone. There were a lot of other ‘70s
superstars, too – Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Steward, Queen. By
the mid-‘70s, music was a billion-dollar industry and artists like these
controlled it.
But not everybody was happy with superstar pop. For many people
it didn’t take enough risks. Some of them decided to play a new, more
dangerous kind of music – punk rock.
The punk revolution began in small clubs. One of them was ‘The
100 Club’ in London’s Oxford Street. That’s where bands like The Sex
Pistols used to appear in the late ‘70s. Everything about their clothes
and music was different. They didn’t look happy and rich. They looked
poor and angry. They weren’t good musicians – many of them couldn’t
play their instruments at all.
Groups like The Sex Pistols brought new energy to music.
Suddenly it belonged to the kids again. But not for long. Punk started
as a revolution…by 1980 it was a fashion. (English Learner's Digest)

Stylistic Problems of Translation. New and Old Information

В українській (російській) мові нова інформація зазвичай


зсувається в кінець речення. Ознакою нової інформації в
англійському реченні є неозначений артикль a (an) або
відсутність артикля. Відповідно змінюється і порядок слів при
перекладі:
A video and record album from the concert are reportedly to be
released soon. Повідомляють, що скоро буде випущено альбоми
відео- та фонозаписів цього концерту.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In early September 1995 the eyes and ears of the rock music world
were focused on Cleveland, Ohio, as the long-awaited Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame and Museum opened to great fanfare. A great concert,
featuring many rock legends and Hall of Fame members along with a
contingent of current stars, was also part of the weekend celebration.
The September 2 Hall of Fame concert, held in Cleveland Stadium,
featured artists from the length and breadth of rock's illustrious history,
and attracted a cable television audience of more than 13 million.
Legendary guitarist and songwriter Chuck Berry opened and closed the
show, and in between, the crowds and viewers were treated to
performances by Hall of Famers Bob Dylan, James Brown, Al Green,
The Kinks, Wilson Pickett, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Creedence
Clearwater Revival and others. Most of the current artists who took
part paid tribute to deceased or absent Hall of Famers by playing their
songs. All in all, the concert featured almost 70 songs and lasted into
the early morning hours. The show reportedly brought at least $7
million, including the television rights money. A video and record
album from the concert are reportedly in the works.
Among the most famous members of the Hall of Fame are,
undoubtedly, Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
American singer and actor Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was one of
the most popular entertainers of the 20th century, renowned as an
early pioneer of rock-and-roll music. Presley is considered by many to
be the genre's greatest performer.
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley attended a church in his
youth where he was exposed to church music. He also listened to blues
and country-and-western music and won a talent contest at the age of
ten.
After high school, Presley worked as a truck driver. In 1953, while
recording some songs as a birthday gift for his mother at a studio in
Memphis, Tennessee, Presley impressed the studio manager with his
unique vocal style, demonstrating both outstanding range and
influences of black American music. At the age of 21 Presley recorded
his first songs for a major record label, the Radio Corporation of
America (RCA), including the original and popular “Heartbreak Hotel”
(1956). He followed with the enormously successful double-sided
single record “Hound Dog”/“Don't Be Cruel” (1956) and “All Shook
Up” (1957).
From 1956 to 1958, Presley starred in four motion pictures, all of
which featured his soundtracks: Love Me Tender (1956), Jailhouse
Rock (1957), Loving You (1957), and King Creole (1958). After
serving in the United States Armed Forces from 1958 to 1960, Presley
appeared in numerous musical films, including Flaming Star (1960),
Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), Viva Las Vegas
(1964), and Live a Little, Love a Little (1968).
During the 1970s, facing personal difficulties, including drug
dependency, Presley seldom appeared in public. He died when he was
only 42.
Known as the King of Rock’n’Roll, Presley mixed sounds of
country music with black rhythm-and-blues influences, creating the
new rock-and-roll style. His unprecedented, electrically charged
performances helped make Presley one of the first mass idols of United
States popular culture. He inspired countless musical artists. His many
hit songs are still very popular.
His concert in Hawaii on April 4, 1973, broadcast via satellite
around the world, was seen by more than 1.5 billion people - the
largest audience ever for an entertainment program.
The Beatles is a legendary British rock music group, which
revolutionized popular music around the world in the 1960s. From
1964 through 1969, the Beatles achieved unprecedented popularity
with 30 songs reaching the top-ten popular music charts.
They made their first record in 1962 and became probably the most
famous and successful group ever. Formed in 1959, the Beatles were
composed of four musicians born in Liverpool, England: guitarist
George Harrison, guitarist John Lennon, bassist* Paul McCartney, and
drummer Ringo Starr. At first they were influenced by American rock-
and-roll artists. From the simple, fresh style of their early songs, such
as “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “A Hard Day's Night”, the
Beatles progressed to innovative, experimental works.
In 1964 the Beatles traveled to New York City to appear on a
television broadcast and launched the so-called British Invasion. As
with early rock and roll, the major American record companies did not
take the British bands seriously at first – the Beatles' first hit singles in
the United States were released by small record companies. Soon,
however, the success of the British bands became too difficult to
ignore, and some American musicians reacted by developing their own
styles. In 1965 Bob Dylan performed live and in-studio with a band
that played electric instruments. The folk-rock style was further
pioneered the same year by the American band the Byrds. Some other
groups blended aspects of rock and country-and-western music to
create country rock.
During the late 1960s, rock music developed further into new
styles while consolidating its position in the mainstream of American
popular music. The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts
Club Band, the first rock concept album, established new standards for
studio recording and helped to establish the notion of the rock
musician as a creative artist. Once again, American musicians reacted
to the British musical stimulus by experimenting with new forms,
technologies, and styles.
Most of the Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon and Paul
McCartney. The songs were admired for their harmony and lyrics, non-
traditional musical phrases and rhythms. The Beatles also made some
successful films and often appeared on television.
In 1970 the Beatles split up and each member started another
musical career. John Lennon was killed in 1980 in New York. Paul
McCartney continues to sing and make music.
The Beatles are still very popular, and millions of people buy their

Dublin, Ireland
St. Patrick's Day was so good this year that we celebrated for a full
week! St Patrick's Festival ran from the 11th - 17th March with a
wonderful programme of free entertainment for all to enjoy. The
Festival programme was full of exciting and fun events including street
theatre, fireworks, music, exhibitions and our very own treasure hunt*.
The atmosphere was great!
St. Patrick's Festival was a huge success this year, with over 85
events, venues and the streets of Dublin came alive with festivities!
Maria Moynihan, Chief Executive, said "We're delighted with this
year's Festival. Even the sun joined us as we came together to celebrate
Ireland!"

Festival Parade
Monday 17th March 2003, 12pm
It’s St. Patrick’s Day and the world is Irish! What better place to be
than Dublin for the best parade in the world. For an hour and a half you
will be entertained by a fantastic show of colourful and creative
pageants, marching bands, pomp, ceremony and celebration. The
parade starts at 12 pm from St. Patrick Cathedral. It follows a route
through Dublin's finest streets - Patrick Street, Dame Street,
Westmoreland Street and O'Connell Street. We advise that you get
there early in order to get a good view of the world famous parade!
This year's parade is going to be an incredible spectacle with an
80% increase in performers, from 1,970 last year to 3,500 this year.
The theme of Voyages and Visions* is the inspiration for a lot of
talented street theatre groups and bands who will take part. With bigger
presentations from top street theatre groups such as Bui Bolg* and
Inishowen Carnival Group joined by new companies from Cork,
Omagh* and Kildare; as well as* collaborations with Fatima
Mansions, Emmet 200 and a new cross border initiative, this year’s
parade will be a truly nationwide event.

St. Patrick Celebrated in Moscow


Bands played, Guinness* flowed and leprechauns* danced in the
street. This Irish celebration of the national saint St. Patrick was
traditional in every sense, except for its location – Moscow.
The 200-strong Irish community living in Moscow braved sub-zero
temperatures and snow to show Muscovites a true festival. The 40
floats organised by Irish and other Western firms based in Moscow
proceeded down the city's main streets. The mayor of Moscow was
then presented with a shamrock* by the Irish ambassador*.
Bands flew to Moscow for the event. The Arteme Boys Band
consisting of 43 musicians arrived from Dublin. The Band's chairman,
Pai Guthrie, said the event had been 'terrific and thrilling'.
The Irish at the carnival also enjoyed the event. Albert Barker
working at the Warsaw airport, Poland, flew to Moscow for St.
Patrick's day. "It's a great idea. I've come to listen to Irish music and

Beauty Pageants

Today beauty pageants are a huge part of American culture. There


are 70,000 contests held every year in America alone, with 4 million
would-be queens taking part.

Who can enter?


It looks like it's a girl's world when it comes to beauty pageants.
Up to the age of three years old boys and girls can enter but afterwards
contests are for girls only.

How did it all start?


Beauty pageants started in 1921 in Atlantic City (USA) when hotel
owners tried to keep tourists by having a National Beauty Tournament
on the beach. When judges picked the winner a local journalist cried,
"Let's call her Miss America". After this competition the winner was
always called 'Miss America'.

How were the rules made?


Rules were made as the years went by. For example, to enter you
had to be single and have no children. Before this rule, a married
mother of two won the title 'Miss America'! At the beginning there was
just one pageant. Now there are different ones. In the early 1950s some
Miss America contestants wanted to wear dresses, not swimming
costumes. This upset a major sponsor of the competition, a swimwear
company called Catalina. Catalina then decided to start new
competitions called Miss USA and Miss Universe.

What other big pageants are there?


Now pageants such as Miss Black America exist, plus pageants for
married women. There are also pageants for American Indians, for girl
students, for oversized ladies and women with physical disabilities.
Some of such shows are rather funny, for example Miss Most Kissable
Lips, Miss Snake Charmer, Swine Queen and Underwater Queen.

Miss National Congress of American Indians Pageant

It's extremely appropriate that the Miss National Congress of


American Indians Pageant should be held in November. That's the
month when most Americans are reminded of their country's native
heritage.
When families sit down to their annual Thanksgiving holiday meal,
they are commemorating a time when tribal people came to help early
European settlers. For all the centuries of blood, injustice and tragedy
that followed, that moment proved for all time the greatness of the
American Indian.
The pageant is a more contemporary demonstration of the same
truth. Its 34th annual presentation was concluded Nov. 11, 2002, in
San Diego. NCAI, which runs the pageant, was founded in 1944 and is
the oldest as well as the largest tribal government organization in the
United States, which serves as a forum for consensus-based policy
development among its membership. The Miss NCAI Pageant was first
held in 1969, making it the longest-running pageant for American
Indian women.
In 2002, five contestants сompeted for the title. Prior to* pageant
night, the contestants took part in an essay competition, were
interviewed by a group of judges, and made several public
appearances. On pageant night, each of the contestants competed in the
talent showcase,the evening gown and improvised portions of the
event.
The talent showcase highlighted the unique cultures and the
diversity of Indian Country. Alicia Childs from the Tohono O'odham
Nation (Arizona) sang the National Anthem in the Tohono O'odham
language, as well as another song, "The Children's Shrine," dedicated
to the children who have lost their lives trying to cross into the United
States through the southern border of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Amber Ebarb, a member of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of
Alaska, performed a two-part talent show that symbolized Native
Alaskans' life in two cultures. The first part consisted of a Tlingit song
and dance in full traditional costume and was followed by a
performance of a piece from Weber's Grand Duo Concertante for
clarinet.
Tamara James of the Yakima Indian Nation in Washington state
performed the Feather Dance, while her mother sang on stage with her.
Karen-Irene Serna of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona
sang a song she composed in the Akimel O'odham language and
followed with a Pee-Posh folk dance.
Finally, Cinammon Rogers of the Hupa Valley Indian Tribe in
California spoke on the challenges her tribal community faces with the
diminishing water in the Klamath River and its effects on the fish
population.
Ponka-We Victors, of the Ponca and Tohono O'odham Nations,
passed the title of Miss NCAI to Ms. Karen-Irene Serna of the Gila
River Indian Community in a final culmination of the three-day
festivities. Ms. Serna will carry the title of Miss NCAI 2002-2003 and
is awarded a $5,000 scholarship to continue her studies at the Tohono
O'odham Community College, where she is majoring in English and
Art. Alicia Childs was the runner-up*, and she also recieved the Best
Talent Award.
The panel of judges* included Mary Kim Titla (San Carlos
Apache), news reporter with Channel 12 News in Phoenix,
Apesanahkwat (Menominee), actor, Letha Lamb (Gila River Indian
Community) of Whirlwind Productions, Cory Witherall (Navajo),
professional race car driver, and Yolanda Espinoza.

What's Wrong with Television Programs for Young People

Lee Polk* began working in television when both he and television


were very young. He has worked in every part of television; he has
been a writer, a director, a producer; he has worked in news, public
affairs, entertainment and programs for young people. Right now he is
the Director of Television and Motion Pictures for King Features.
Before that he was a director of children’s television of the American
Broadcasting Company. He is also the president of the New York
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has taught courses about
television at New York University and the New School for Social
Research. You may have seen programs for which he was largely
responsible, such as the Afterschool Specials on ABC-TV, or a series
of lovely folk tales on National Education Television called
“Masquerade”. At one time or another Lee has worked as a writer,
director, producer, executive producer of these and many other
programs. He knows what different people have to say about television

Television Is Too Violent


This includes Tom and Jerry’s adventures, as well as whatever
happens on any of the police dramas – the killings and the beatings,
especially. All this violence, critics say, has an influence on you,
making you think that human beings aren’t very important and that
life is not especially valuable. They also say that the loud, fast,
violent action will make you more aggressive. If a program has a
great deal* of action – people shooting each other, many fist fights
and karate chops – you may notice that afterwards you feel even
more angry than usual when your parents say it is time to wind up*
your television viewing. Sometimes, television networks actually
take programs off the air because of criticism that they are ‘too
violent’.

Television Is Too Commercial


Every few minutes someone is trying to sell you something you
don’t need. In fact, say some critics, you end up being the
salesperson for the product when you ask your parents to buy goods
that are usually unnecessary. They also claim that most commercials
are designed* to give you the feeling that if you don’t have a certain
product there is something the matter with you. For example, one
commercial makes you feel that unless you have a particular brand
of sneakers* you probably won’t be accepted on any kind of team.
That is not true, of course!

Television Is Too Unreal


Critics also claim that television seems to present too much of a
fantasy world, usually through animation but also in dramas*.
Superheroes and heroines lead youngsters believe that the solution to
most problems is through supernormal powers. Some psychologists
say that children feel they are helpless because they are ordinary and
they feel disappointed because their parents and teachers are only
human. Such fantasies don’t help young people learn to deal with
reality.
Even the laughter you sometimes hear isn’t real. To make sure
you know that situations are really funny, producers think they need
the help of a laughing machine, which is a tape recording, called a
laugh track, of people laughing in different ways.
Television Is Too Visual
Television, say the critical voices, is turning us into a nation of
nonreaders. Children are not reading books because they can watch
all the dramas, see all the special events they are interested in and
even get their education without having to concentrate on the
printed page. In addition, the pleasure in reading never has a chance
to be discovered.
Doctors worry because your eyes were not designed to stare at
anything for hours. Other adults say that children are losing
opportunities to use their imagination because of TV. Books, they
say, are quite different; while people are being entertained, they are
still having to imagine their own scenes and characters – how people
look, what they are doing, etc. Television leaves nothing to
imagination.

Television Wastes Valuable Time


Instead of spending your time getting needed exercise, playing,
thinking, traveling, spending time with friends, you are sitting in front
of the Box. This unnatural act of sitting and staring is making you
angry and restless. There is too little time left for doing, talking,
communicating, rather than just passively watching. The waste of
valuable time is one of the major worries of this group of critical

However, not everyone agrees with these criticisms of television.


There are many people – television programmers, advertisers,
teachers and parents – who think there are many things very right
about television.

Violence Is in the Eye of the Viewer


Most studies have shown that the children who are influenced the
most by violence on television are already ‘potentially aggressive’.
Some people say that such children need help and understanding and
that television cannot be held responsible for making a child feel
angry and hostile. Other influences must be taken into account, such
as living in a dangerous neighborhood or feeling unloved and
unwanted.
Another point to consider is that many adults grew up with
‘Agent 007’ and shoot-‘em-up Westerns and most of them did not
become violent. Many fairy tales are extremely violent, as are some
plays by Shakespeare. Some experts also feel that watching make-
believe* violence is a helpful way to ‘work off steam’, that is to
experience* these kinds of feelings without hurting oneself or other
people.

Television Commercials Are Necessary and Entertaining


Advertisers feel that their commercials provide information as
well as entertainment. They say that by watching commercials
carefully you become a better-informed consumer.
Television people say that commercials are the best way to pay
for programs. Public broadcasting lives by getting money from the
public, from private foundations, major corporations and from the
federal government. Most people are against the idea of our
government’s running television. The only alternative, they say, is
commercials.

Fantasy on Television Is Not Harmful


Saturday morning has many live-action programs and animation.
And, says the pro-television group, children are more mature than
ever before and can discriminate between fact and fantasy. Many
adults feel that television programs which are done with good taste
and imagination can stimulate a child’s own creativity. Some
television viewing may even give children ideas about making up
their own stories or poems or pictures.
Comedies today are more real than they used to be. More
programs are produced with live audiences, so the laughter is more
honest. Women have more important and intelligent roles. Slowly
Afro-Americans, Puerto-Ricans and other minority groups are
represented with more respect and fewer stereotypes. Issues and
events that are of real concern to young people are discussed openly.
Subjects such as birth and death, physical handicaps, divorce,
honesty and cheating, love and anger, are often the focus of today’s
programs.

Of Course Television Is Visual – And That's Just Fine


Some psychologists and educators say that the proper use of TV
by teachers could make readers and writers of some students who
read nothing except comic books. Many adults feel that when
television presents a wide variety of ideas, adventures, stories, it
stimulates children to look for books that can tell them even more
about the subjects which interest them the most.
There are special shows for youngsters, drama and dance
programs and excellent films, all of which are well worth seeing.

Time-Wasting Is the Viewer's Problem


Some American critics complain: “The biggest problem with
television in our country is that the average* viewer is watching six
hours of it per day*… Americans have lost touch with one
another…”
Does it mean that you have to stop watching television altogether?
You should only be selective in your viewing. Enjoy life by being
active rather than always watching others being active for you.
Watching television should be mixed with other activities. Many
people claim that this question of a ‘balanced diet’ is not up to the
television set; it is up to you to make your own choice. Every new
invention brings with it wonderful new possibilities as well as all kinds
of new (and usually unexpected) problems. The simple truth is that

The Weakest Link – The Best of Great British Entertainment

A sadistic British quiz show expanded its success this year when it
was exported to the USA. It may surprise you to know that Anne
Robinson, the hostess of the show, has become a cultural phenomenon
in the States. A 57-year-old British school ma’am type, she did not
waste time trying to please Hollywood executives and the public. Oh
no, if you enjoy scandal and sadism – Anne Robinson is the woman
for you.
Robinson and her show, The Weakest Link, are among the most
controversial British exports to the USA in recent years. The British
version of the show features nine contestants, who answer a series of
quick-fire general knowledge questions as they attempt to accumulate
a cash prize.
At the end of each round, the contestants must decide which one of
them is to be eliminated. This person is rejected by Robinson with the
now global catchphrase*: “You are the weakest link, goodbye!”
Throughout the show contestants are treated with acid* comments,
usually implying that they are slow or stupid or both. There has been a
huge amount of criticism in the US ever since the show was first aired.
Phrases such as “queen of mean*”, “humourless British dog in granny
glasses” are just a few of the personal attacks aimed at her.
US psychiatrist, Professor Marc Feldman, has said of the show:
”Anne Robinson, a skinny, bespectacled* woman of an uncertain age,
comes across on screen like an angry teenager boy… I don’t think the
country is ready for such an aggressive woman on television show
ever. I think she will attract a lot of contestants who want to become
famous”.
But Robinson, who put £ 15 million in her pocket, can disregard
the critics. The show is highly successful, especially with adult viewers
aged 18-49. Robinson herself puts the show’s transatlantic success
down to* the USA’s love of British eccentricity. She says: “Margaret
Thatcher impressed America as a strong and resolute woman and I’m
following in her footsteps.”
There have been reports of hundreds of people queuing up* across
the USA to become contestants on the show. Now the show has been
sold to a total of 62 countries around the world.
You may be interested to know that Anne Robinson is publishing
her autobiography named ‘Memoirs Of An Unfit* Mother’. She has
also been meeting with film companies in order to make a film about
her life, and she is producing a single for the British group Echobass. If
you are her fan, you can buy an Anne Robinson doll, t-shirts, and a

How to Enjoy a Live Concert

Hearing live music is one of the most pleasurable experiences in


human life. The music sounds great, it feels great, and you watch the
musicians as they create it. No matter what kind of music you love*,
try listening to it live.
Here we focus on listening to classical music, a tradition which
originated before radio and recordings, back when all music was live
music. It was played by live human beings for other live human
beings, with everybody together in the same room. When you hear it
in this way, classical music can have a special excitement.
Hearing classical music in a concert can leave you feeling
refreshed and energized. It can be fun. It can be romantic. It can be
spiritual. It can also scare* you to death.

The Listener's Job


People going to a classical music concert for the first time often
ask themselves: What if I don't understand the music? What if I don' t
know how to listen correctly? What if I don't "get it"?
The good news is this: there is no right way to listen, there is no
correct experience to have, there is no one thing to "get."
Understanding is not required. Your job is not to be an expert on the
music. Your job is not to be a perfect listener. Your job is very simple:
Be affected by the music.
Because you are unique, and because your collection of
experiences is unique, the music will affect you differently than it will
anybody else. It may affect your emotions, your thoughts, your spirit,
your body — any part of you. The same music may affect you
differently at different times. Music is meant to trigger reactions*,
invite reflection, awaken feelings, activate memories, and touch the
heart. So just let yourself be affected.
A wonderful and mysterious thing about live concerts is that
everybody comes to be affected together. Everybody onstage and
everybody in the audience shares in the same experience, each of us in
our own unique way.
Kinds of Concerts
A Recital usually shows off one particular musician, either a
pianist or somebody accompanied by a pianist. There are other kinds of
recitals, though: a Duo Recital, in which there are two people on the
bill, or a recital by a group.
Chamber Music is generally a small group of musicians
performing without a conductor. The String Quartet (two violins, a
viola, and a cello) is probably the most popular combination. Another
popular grouping is a Piano Trio (not three pianos, but one piano
playing with a violin and a cello). There are lots of other combinations:
wind groups, vocal groups, percussion groups, mixed groups. Often
one group will play a whole concert by itself, but some chamber music
concerts include a few different combinations of players and/or
singers.
A Chamber Orchestra is a small-sized orchestra, from ten to forty
players. The orchestra will vary in size depending on the music being
played. Some chamber orchestra concerts use only string instruments,
but often there are other instruments as well. Usually chamber
orchestras are led by a conductor.
A Symphony Orchestra (or Philharmonic Orchestra) is a large
orchestra -- it may have eighty or more players, with all the families of
instruments: strings, woodwinds, brasses, percussion, and often harp
and piano. An orchestra of this size has a conductor, and usually will
feature a guest artist to play or sing with the orchestra. Sometimes a
chorus is added.
Choral Music has a wonderful variety. Some is sung a capella,
without any accompaniment – by human voices alone. Other choral
music is accompanied by piano, or by groups of instruments, or by a
whole orchestra. Choirs range in size from chamber music groups of
three or four to huge choirs of more than a hundred people.
Opera and Dance have visual and theatrical elements along with
the music. The music might be played by a full orchestra, or it might
be played by a smaller group, by a piano or two, or by a pre-recorded
tape. Be sure to find out whether or not the music will be live!
Children's Concerts and Family Concerts are designed to be fun
for children; they are shorter, and happen during the daytime. Usually
the conductor or an emcee talks about the music.
Pops Concerts feature lighter classics and popular music.
Sometimes a celebrity from the popular music world is a guest artist.

Instruments of the Orchestra


Every orchestra is different, but here are some instruments you
may see in a concert.
String family: violin, viola, cello (violoncello), bass (double bass,
contra bass).
Woodwind family: flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass
clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, saxophones.
Brass family: trumpet, horn (French horn), trombone, tuba.

At a Concert

Concert Manners
There's nothing mysterious or difficult about how to act at a
concert. It's mostly just common sense*: the music needs silence, so
the audience contributes silence; both the musicians and the audience
want to concentrate on the music.
There is one part that can be confusing: knowing when to clap*. At
most other kinds of concerts, people clap whenever the music stops,
but in classical music you wait to clap until the very end of a piece.
Believe me, musicians love applause. If somebody gets carried away*
and claps in the "wrong" place, most musicians don't mind. We're
happy to accept approval in any form.
But here is why we like the audience to wait until the very end of a
piece: we want everyone to hear the complete piece as a total
experience. Long pieces may involve several mood changes, and it's
lovely not to interrupt them with applause.
In some situations you can clap whenever you like something. This
is often the case at opera and ballet. The audience may applaud the
lights dimming, the curtain opening, the first appearance of a major
star, an impressive dance move, a lovely song, or a beautifully
designed stage.
At a concert you don't have to sit like a statue. You can breathe,
you can respond to the music, you can move your body in your chair.
Just try not to distract others from enjoyment of the performance. The
basic idea is to help each other focus on the music. If you contribute
attention and silence, it will help the musicians to give you a better
concert.
The Concert Ritual
Every kind of music has its rituals. We need ritual to help the
performers and the audience get into a musical frame of mind*, and to
contain the power released by the music.
In an orchestra, the leader of the violin section is called the
concertmaster. Often the concertmaster stays backstage* until the rest
of the orchestra is ready to begin. Then the concertmaster comes
onstage and takes a bow* as the audience claps. The concertmaster
turns to the orchestra, a tuning note is sounded, and the musicians tune
their instruments. The audience should stay quiet during tuning.
Next the conductor comes onstage. As the audience applauds, the
conductor may invite the orchestra to stand up to share in the applause.
The conductor shakes hands with the concertmaster as representative
of the orchestra. As the players sit back down, the conductor turns
toward them (away from the audience), and begins the music.
The music may start and stop a few times within one piece of
music, but when the whole piece is over, the audience claps, and the
conductor turns toward the audience to accept the applause. Then the
conductor leaves the stage. As long as the applause keeps going, the
conductor will keep coming back onto the stage to bow and receive the
applause. He or she may ask the orchestra or individual players to
stand to share the applause.
When everybody is ready, the conductor will come onstage again
to lead the next piece. If there is a soloist, he or she will walk onstage
with the conductor, and you might notice the conductor staying a bit
more in the background during the applause, allowing the soloist to be
the focus of the audience's attention.
If all the clapping and bowing at a classical concert seems strange,
it might help to think of a concert as an energy exchange. The
musicians send out musical energy, which the audience receives. At
the end of a piece, it is time for the audience to give something back by
clapping, and time for the musicians to receive it, by bowing.

affected by whatever the music has to offer.

The purpose of the PAS 2003 Solo Marimba Competition is to
encourage the highest level of artistic expression in the art of solo
marimba performance. The contest is a student competition and it is
designed to select four finalists to compete at the Percussive Arts
Society International Convention* (PASIC) in Louisville, Kentucky in
November. Finalists will receive cash awards and their respective
percussion programs will receive awards.

30th Annual Percussion Composition Contest


The Percussive Arts Society sponsors this annual competition to
encourage and reward those who create music for percussion
instruments and to increase the number of quality compositions written
for percussion.

PAS 2003 International Ensemble Competition


The purpose of the Percussive Arts Society Percussion Ensemble
Competition is to encourage, promote and reward musical excellence
in percussion ensemble performance and compositions by selecting the
most qualified high school and college/university percussion

Theatre Training in the United States

These are parts of the lecture presented to the Kharkiv Academy of


Culture by Professor John Hofland (USA) in June 2002.
Thank you for the invitation to visit your academy and city, and for
attending my lecture today. I give you greetings from Gonzaga
University in Spokane, Washington, from the members of the theatre
faculty, from President Robert Spitzer, and from Academic Vice
President Wayne Powel.
I want to begin by thanking and congratulating you for what I have
learned from my previous associations with artists from Kharkiv and
the rest of Eastern Europe. I have learned especially from working
with your colleague, Mr. Evgeni Gimelfarb*. The strengths of Eastern
European aesthetics are the topic of much writing in the United States,
and the influence of Eastern European theory are evident in our acting
and design. Acting students base their studies on Stanislavsky's
method, and the recent trend is for students of design to study theories
of non-realistic design, sometimes called post-modern design in the
United States, and sometimes called psychoplastic design. I myself
owe a great debt* to people like yourselves for my own understandings
about the theatre. I hope, therefore, that you in turn will be able to
learn something useful from me today, and that our visits together this
summer will be the beginning of a long and productive exchange.
First of all some general comments about the variety of theatre
education available in the United States. Theatre training in the United
States can be divided into two main categories. In a "liberal arts"
school*, theatre students spend about 1/4 of their time studying theatre.
The purpose of a liberal arts school is to educate students for many
options, and not just for one profession. The education is intended to
prepare theatre students with knowledge not just in theatre, but also in
history, philosophy, science, languages, religion, and so forth. In this
way students are prepared to be life-long learners who are able to
build on a broad foundation to advance their own careers, and learners
who are ready to serve not just their chosen profession, but also the
larger community in which they live.
The second kind of training is the kind available in the professional
training school. In these schools, students study in their area of
specialization exclusively. The advantage, of course, is that they are
more skilled when they graduate. However, many people believe that
students who study only theatre as undergraduates are poorly prepared
for a long life in the theatre. Such students lack the broad resources
offered in a liberal arts education and often become limited performers.
My friends here often ask me: Who has the right to enter
universities in the US and on what conditions? There are probably as
many answers to this question as there are universities. However, I
will try to give some general answers. Admission to most schools
depends first of all on a student's grades in high school and secondly
on one of two admission tests that students are required to take. The
American College Test (ACT) is a four hour test in English language
skills, mathematics, reading skills, and scientific thinking. It is not a
test of specific knowledge as much as it is a test of skills and abilities.
The more prestigious a school is, the higher the grades that it requires.
At some theatre schools, students are admitted into the theatre
program after they have had a successful audition, or after they have
proven* themselves in some performances. We do not use auditions
or require a portfolio for admission into the program at Gonzaga.
In a sense*, schools compete to get the best students as much as
students compete to get into the schools of their choice. Much money
goes into advertising a school's programs and into recruiting the best
students. The best students are offered scholarships for skills or
interests in special areas, and donors are sought to provide funds for
these scholarships. Often the scholarships are used to recruit the kind
of students that are needed for the college's mission. For example,
Gonzaga wishes to provide education for poor Native American
students, so it provides scholarships to take a few of these students to
school without cost.
How much does it cost to go to school in the United States? The
price ranges from inexpensive schools that are supported by tax
money, to more expensive, privately funded schools, and to very
expensive and very prestigious schools for the wealthy elite. At
Eastern Washington University, a state school in Spokane, tuition costs
about 1200 dollars every semester. At Gonzaga University, tuition
costs 9700 dollars per semester. In addition, books may cost from 10
to 100 dollars per book, and students, who take the normal load of five
courses per semester, usually need to buy more than one textbook per
course. If students choose to live in dormitories, they will pay about
1400 dollars to share a room with another student, and another 1400
dollars to pay for food.
Many students cannot afford to pay for such costs. So how can
they afford to go to school? There are many methods. Families save
money for many years to help pay their children's education, but that
seldom provides enough money. Students work during the school year
to pay for the education. Some work is on campus. The government
provides money to pay for students who work on campus to provide
services to the university. Some students earn money by studying
military science part-time during their undergraduate education.
Poorer families can apply for special scholarships for needy students
who have achieved good grades. Other students win scholarships for
their special skills. Most students take out loans from banks. They are
expected to pay back the loans after they graduate and find a job.
Students at liberal arts institutions like Gonzaga are required to
take a total of about 42 courses in four years, or 10-11 courses per
year. About 20 of these 42 courses must be in what are called "core
requirements" – classes considered to be the foundation of every
person's education. These ten courses include classes in composition,
philosophy, religion, mathematics, literature, history, art, science, a
social science, and a foreign language. While there are required areas
of courses, there are some choices available in each subject area.
Likewise, there are choices within a major (area of specialization).
To major in theatre, a student must take thirteen classes in theatre. In
eight of these courses the student has no choice, but with the other five
there are choices.
After the core requirements and the major, the student is expected
to choose about nine other classes that are called "electives". Electives
are courses that the student can choose with no regulation. Some
students use the electives to earn a second major. Others take a wide
variety of courses from many subject areas, depending on their future
plans.

Theatre Training at Gonzaga University

As you can see, getting an education at Gonzaga requires students


to make choices and to plan each semester carefully. While it is
possible for them to make wonderful plans to prepare for future
careers, it is also possible for them to make some very poor plans. To
prevent poor choices, each student is assigned an "advisor." Before the
student begins her university studies, she meets with her advisor to
discuss her plans. Then, before each new semester each student must
meet his advisor to get approval for his next semester's course
selections. While it is expected that the advisor will help the students
in their planning, it is the student's responsibility to choose the proper
courses. The advisor's role is not as an authority, but as a guide.
When a course has been completed, a professor will provide a test
to evaluate the students' mastery of the material. She might give
students a final examination during the final class, she might give them
a take-home test – usually a question or set of question that require the
students to write a composition explaining their understanding, or she
might give them a project to complete. Students in scenic design, for
example, are required to complete designs for scenery for a play that
will be mounted later that year at the university.
But at the end of the course, students also evaluate their instructors.
At the end of each semester, the Academic Vice President, who is the
equivalent of your rector, sends each professor a set of evaluation
forms. The students fill in each form, telling how well they believe the
professor taught the course. They bring the completed evaluations, not
to the professor, but back to the Academic Vice President, whose
secretaries send the evaluations and summaries to the dean of the
college, who then sends it to the head of the professor's department.
The department head reads the forms and sends them to the professor,
who is expected to use the evaluations to improve his classes.
As you can see, this kind of arrangement tends to make teachers
and students partners in learning. Each has responsibilities, and each is
held responsible by the other.
You may ask me what some of the graduates from this year's class
are planning to do. One is going to London to study acting. One is
going to work as a technical director for a small theatre, one is going to
do volunteer work in a poor neighborhood for a year before going to
graduate school in drama therapy (a combination of theatre and
psychology), one is going to California to find work as a movie actor,
one will do graduate work in children's theatre, one will make a career
in stage makeup, one in voice-over work (advertising and acting on
radio), and one in advertising and business.
The university provides a number of ways to guide and support its
new graduates as they search for places of employment. An
organization called GAMP – Gonzaga Alumni* Mentors Program – is
a large group of graduates who volunteer to meet with recent graduates
on a regular basis to help them determine career goals, help them find
work, help them adjust to new positions, and in general act as a wise,
experienced friend. Secondly, each spring the university arranges a
career fair where businesses are invited to explain to graduates what
kind of skills they are looking for and possibly to set up interviews.
Last of all, the Career Counseling Center is a place where students can
go to at any time while they are at school to get advice on finding jobs.
Last of all, some words about Gonzaga University as an institution.
The university has four schools, the School of Arts and Sciences, the
School of Education, the School of Business, and the School of Law.
The theatre program is part of the School of Arts and Sciences. In
addition, the university has a branch location in Florence, Italy, called
Gonzaga in Florence. The branch school is especially popular with art
students, but students from a wide variety of disciplines spend a year
studying in Italy.
Now let us look more closely at the theatre program at Gonzaga.
The faculty of the program includes a teacher of acting and directing,
Kevin Bradshaw; a teacher of design and technology, myself; a
costumer, Summer Berry; three part-time dance teachers in jazz, tap,
ballet, and liturgical dance, and a part-time director.
Some of the theatre courses that we offer are required, and others
are available as choices. Students are required to take the following
courses:
 An introduction to the theatre – its history, literature, and the
elements of production.
 Theater graphics – a study of drafting and drawing for the theatre.
 Two courses in acting – an introduction to Stanislavsky (American
style) and characterization.
 Two courses in the history and literature of the theatre.
 Directing.
 A senior project – students are required to write a plan discussing
their future professional interests.
In addition, students are required to participate in our productions
in the following ways. They must perform acting roles in three main
stage performances, and they must work in a technical area in three
productions.
Also there are some classes that are available as limited choices.
Students must take at least one dance class. They must study a course
in either stage construction or costume construction. And they must
choose two to three courses of their choice from dance, directing, or
technical theatre (such as scenic, costume, or lighting design).
Each year the program mounts three faculty directed productions, a
dance production, and a small number of student directed productions.
The productions are built around a four year schedule so that in four
years students will have worked on Greek theatre, medieval theatre,
renaissance theatre, realistic, post-realist theatre, children's theatre, and
American musical theatre.
This concludes my lecture. I hope the information has been useful
to promote discussion. I will enjoy answering your questions. Thank

Seattle Fringe Theatre* Festivals

Seattle Fringe Festival is the oldest Fringe Festival in the United


States. The 13th annual Seattle Fringe Festival will be held September
18-28, 2003 at multiple indoor and outdoor performance venues on
Capitol Hill. The 11 day festival will feature over 500 performances,
with 20,000 audience members expected to attend.
Fringe theatre audiences are a well educated, urban crowd with
eclectic tastes and high incomes. Most live in the Seattle metropolitan
area. From college students to senior citizens, Fringe-goers are
adventurous consumers who have a taste for quality – and the unusual
– their entertainment.
Seattle Fringe Festival is a festival of performances by local,
national and international theatre and performing companies. Shows
range from Shakespeare to sketch comedy. One acts, full lengths, solo
shows, plays by young playwrights, and ensemble shows are all part of
the Fringe. Ticket prices range from $6 - $20.
During the festival, we present a program of shows each night at
every venue beginning at 6 pm. On weekend days, matinee
performances begin at noon. Tickets are available online, by phone and
in person starting September 7. All the venues are within walking
distance of each other on Capitol Hill.
150 volunteers will assist more than 750 theatre artists in
presenting a diverse range of performances from the traditional to the
Avant Garde. Now in its thirteenth year, the Festival supports the
future of live theatre by attracting new audiences to its artistically and
culturally diverse programming with affordable ticket prices and
accessible venues: a theatre for everyone!
The annual Fringe Theatre Festival is the only chance for
audiences to access the wide divergence of their creativity. The
Festival helps to bring new audiences to these brave new talents, and
so cultivates an important new wave of theatre-lovers who continue to
search for more of the performance treasures that Seattle has to offer.

From the 100+ companies performing in the annual Seattle Fringe
Festival, each year three companies are awarded the Artistic Pick for
artistic accomplishment and receive encore presentations following the

Creative Director
Michael Flatley is the creative genius behind Lord Of The Dance.
He not only devised, wrote and produced the show, but was also

record-making show for over two years enchanting everyone who saw
him, everywhere he appeared, with his brilliance as a dancer. He made
his final performance in the show on June 28th, 1998.

Opening Night
On July 2nd, 1996 Michael Flatley premiered Lord Of The Dance
at The Point Theatre in Dublin and the world has never quite been the
same since. On opening night the audience went wild: by the end of the
evening the show had received several standing ovations and such
supreme critical praise that it was to become the most talked about, the
most written about and the most acclaimed show in musical history.
It was the start of a unique story that has gone on to receive
unparalleled praise and to break theatrical records across the globe. It
not only introduced Irish dancing to the world, but catapulted it on to
an even higher plain*.

Touring History
By the time Michael Flatley starred in his final performance of
Lord Of The Dance at Dublin's RDS Arena on June 28th, 1998, the
show had already established a unique place for itself in the history of
entertainment. While Flatley went off to stage and presented the
phenomenal Feet Of Flames all over the world, he kept his artistic
control over the show to ensure its future. It has gone from success to
success.
There are currently three troupes touring with Lord Of The Dance.
Troupe One performs in Europe while Troupe Two tours the USA
where it is seen by an annual audience of 300,000. Troupe Three
opened a five year long residency in Las Vegas in November 2002
where it is estimated it will play to over 400,000 each year.
Today the show is permanently supported by a team of 20 creative
professionals including set designers, costume designers, lighting and
sound experts, and choreographers who ensure its high standards.

Ukrainian Dance in Canada and the USA

Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble (Сanada)


On the steppes of Ukraine grows a herb* called Yevshan. The
people of this land attribute many strange mythical powers to the herb.
To Ukrainians all over the world, the scent of the Yevshan is the scent
of home, bringing back memories of childhood, of one's first love, and
a feeling of belonging...
With the Yevshan herb in mind, a group of 30 dancers joined
together in 1960 to form a Ukrainian dance group and in 1967 became
registered as the Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble. The fall of
2000 marked the 40th Anniversary of The Yevshan Ukrainian Folk
Ballet Ensemble. This is a significant step forward for dance in
Canada, making Yevshan the longest running and most widely traveled
dance company in the province of Saskatchewan.
The Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble was created in 1960
with the goal of preserving, interpreting and expressing historical and
contemporary Ukrainian cultural values for public enjoyment through
technical and artistic excellence in the art form of dance. For over 40
years, Yevshan has thrilled audiences throughout the world, including
performances in England, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States.
Yevshan has toured Canada extensively and have performed
continuously in many cities in their home province of Saskatchewan.
They have performed at two World Fairs, and have twice danced for
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. In July of 1998 Yevshan
completed their successful tour of Eastern Ukraine where they danced
in 5 major cities. In 2002 they began their second tour of Western
Ukraine (their first being in 1992 at the invitation of the Ukrainian
government) and finished off the summer by being guest performers at
the San Diego, California Ukrainian Heritage Festival.
Yevshan is under the artistic directorship of Mr. Vitali
Sorokotiahin, who was Ballet Master and Regisseur, from the
Nadzbruchanka Dance Ensemble, Ternopil, Ukraine. He studied at the
Melitopol Institute of Culture, directed the Molodist Dance Ensemble
in Zaporizhzhia and was a dancer/soloist with the Odesa Region Song
and Dance Ensemble. In the year 2000 Vitali and his family became
Canadian citizens and have made their permanent home in Saskatoon.
Destiny has brought us across the sea, from the beautiful valleys of
the Dniepro River. Here we have planted our roots deep, living in joy
and harmony. As our forefathers would want it. We dance when we are
happy, dance when we are sad, dance when we are joyful, dance when
we are in pain. We dance to let others know who we are, where we are
from and to let them know our gift of life. Most of all, we dance
because we love it. We are YEVSHAN!

Ukrainian American Youth Association Dancers (USA)


The dance group Metelyky consists of children from the ages of 5
and 6. The group is under the auspices of the Ukrainian American
Youth Association and is under the direction of Peter Wasiczko and
Natalka Wasiczko. They have performed at Ellenville, NY in
competition against other branches of the Ukrainian American Youth
Association. They have also performed at previous Yonkers Ukrainian
Heritage Festivals, the Ukrainian Festival at Tibbets Brook Park and at
the New Rochelle Library.
The Soniashnyk dance group consists of children between the ages
of 7 and 9 years old. Most of the children are currently in their fourth
year of study of Ukrainian folk dancing. They are all members of the
Ukrainian American Youth Association branch in Yonkers and meet
for lessons every Tuesday.
The instructors of the group are Myron Kuzemczak, Oksana
Tomaszewsky and Chris Danylyk. Their goal is to pass along the love
for Ukrainian folk dance while challenging children to learn intricate
steps and choreography. Also, they want their students to simply enjoy
performing
The Ukrainian American Youth Association "SUM" (Spilka
Ukrainskoi Molodi) is proud to sponsor their dance classes, under the
direction and choreography of Hryts Mamot. This is Hryts's first year
with the two groups. The ensemble is split into two groups based on
age: Solovey who range from 7 to 12 years of age and Kalyna from 13
up to 17 years old.
The dances are based on original traditional folk dances and
develop a bond between the dancers and their ethnic heritage as well as
being a joy to watch.
The group has been in existence since 1983. Since their existence,
they have performed at many outdoor festivals, banquets and concerts,
much to the delight of their viewers. Each year the groups also
compete with similar age groups at the "SUM" Resort in Ellenville,
NY, where they brought home many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place honors in
their age categories.

Folk Dance

Hopak.
An original Ukrainian folk dance of an improvised nature. Its name
is derived from "hopaty" – 'to leap and stamp one's feet.' The hopak
arose as a male dance at the Zaporozhian Sich in the 16th century and
gradually spread throughout Ukraine, particularly through the Kiev
region. As it spread it became transformed into a group dance
performed by couples with males retaining the lead role. It has several
variants: a solo dance, a group and couple dance, and in Western
Ukraine a circular dance (hopak-kolo). Its charm and attractiveness lie
in the hopak's freedom of improvisation, which allows individual
dancers to display their talents within a larger dance group. The basic
male movements are leaps, squats, stretches on the ground and in the
air, and various turns; the female movements are quick steps, bends,
and turns. Solo performances in the hopak often involve a competition
in virtuosity. Complex acrobatic movements are common in stage
arrangements of the dance.
The tunes to which the dance is performed vary greatly. Some of
them are songs, such as 'Od Kyieva do Luben' and 'Hop, moi
hrechanyky.' Others are original compositions. The tempo is fast; the
beat is 2/4. The hopak is the culminating dance in the repertoire* of
almost all Ukrainian ensembles. It is very popular among Ukrainians
outside Ukraine. Hopak melodies often appear in such classical operas
as S. Hulak-Artemovsky's "Zaporozhian Cossack beyond the Danube,"
M. Lysenko's "Taras Bulba," P. Sokalsky's "The Defense of Dubno,"
and B. Yanovsky's "Black Sea Duma"; in such ballets as A.
Svechnikov's "Marusia Bohuslavka" and B. Libovytsky's "Marusia";
and in A. Shtoharenko's symphonic suite* "In Memory of Lesia
Ukrainka."

I agree that the Hopak is a traditional folk dance. Then its origins
are almost impossible to trace. Instead, we get a number of myths. The
one is that the Hopak was a way of showing off athletic prowess* and
thus intimidating the enemy. If we consider what the Hopak is like and
which muscles it uses, then we see that it is a way for exceptional
performance in fighting on horseback, something we definitely
associate with the Cossacks. So, I like an explanation that it is
somewhere between the practical (exercising needed muscles) and the
symbolic (showing off prowess). Maybe someone else can give a
better answer.

Jig
The Irish jig is a lively step dance usually played in compound
duple or triple time* and performed either as a solo or in groups of two
or more. The jig, dating from the 16th century, is especially popular in
Ireland, as well as in England and Scotland. It is one of the most
remarkable folk music styles in the western hemisphere. In England,
jigs were often used as stage dances. The English jig closely resembles
the Gillie Callum sword dance of Scotland. The jig was adopted in
France at the court of Louis XIV, where it became a more quiet dance
for couples. In the baroque suite by composers such as Johann
Sebastian Bach, the jig is the final movement. The music is
traditionally played on bagpipe (Scotland) or violin and guitar
(Ireland).

Flamenco
Flamenco is a traditional song and dance of Andalusia in southern
Spain. Developing over several centuries from Gypsy, Moorish*,
Andalusian, and other roots, flamenco music and dance entered high
society in the early 19th century as café entertainment. Canto (“song”)
is the core of flamenco, and like baile (“dance”), it has three forms:
grande (“grand”) – intense, profound songs, tragic in tone; intermedio
(“intermediate”) – moderately serious, the music sometimes Oriental-
sounding; and pequeno (“small”) – light songs of joy, love, and nature.
Both text and melody of these songs, like the flamenco dance, are
improvised within traditional structures such as characteristic rhythms
and chords. Zapateado, intricate toe- and heel-clicking steps,
characterizes the men's dance; the traditional women's dance is based
more on grace of body and hand movement. The baile grande,
especially, is believed to retain elements of the dance of India, where
the Gypsies originated. Castanets, found in Andalusian dance, are not
traditional to flamenco. Song and dance may be accompanied by jaleo,
rhythmic finger snapping, hand clapping, and shouting. In the 19th
century, guitar accompaniment became common for many genres, and
guitar solos also developed. In the 20th century, commercial pressure
distorted much traditional flamenco dance.
Based on flamenco, neoclassical Spanish dance developed through
the genius of the Argentine-born Spanish dancer La Argentina, who
was the first to dance to music of leading Spanish composers. Later
followers of the neoclassical style include the Argentine-born Spanish
dancer La Argentinita, the Spanish dancer Vicente Escudero, and the

A Mystic Named Eithne Ní Bhraonáin

Enya's name comes from an ancient Irish legend. Eithne Ní


Bhraonáin (in English spelling Enya Brennan) was born in 1961, 17
May, and spent her childhood in Gweedore (County Donegal).
Donegal, situated in the north-west of Ireland, is one of the main
strongholds* of the Irish language and folk culture. Enya’s first
language is Irish. She can, she says, express herself much better in
Irish. She also says she thinks and dreams not in English but in the
ancient language of her country.
There were nine brothers and sisters in the Braonáin family. Apart
from Eithne, who was in the middle, there were four other girls and
four boys. The children's last names were Ó Braonáin for the boys, or
Ní Bhraonáin for the girls.
In 1968 the family formed a folk/rock group named Clannad and
began to perform traditional Irish music at festivals. The band went on
to international success performing both traditional and original
material. They won many competitions and became famous in national
traditional music circles.
At school, Eithne studied the piano and classical music. After
leaving school she joined Clannad in 1980 under her real name,
providing keyboards and backing vocals. Clannad's songs appeared on
an album called Celtic* Folk Festival.
In 1982 Clannad split with their long-time manager and producer
Nicky Ryan. Nicky had some new musical ideas, and found in Eithne
the perfect artist to explore them. Eithne in turn* found the production
process that Nicky required was a perfect match for her temperament
and skills. Eithne left Clannad and moved to Dublin.
Having a studio at her disposal*, Enya works almost always at
home with a synthesizer, and then adds piano and voice. The music
released under her name is the result of collaboration between three
people: Enya, who sings, writes and performs all the music, her
producer, sound engineer and co-arranger Nicky Ryan and his wife,
lyricist Roma Ryan. Nicky Ryan records everything and helps to put
the compositions into their final form. Roma writes nearly all the lyrics
in Irish, English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic*.
In 1986 BBC-TV began work on a six part documentary series The
Celts about the history and continuing cultural influence of the Celts.
Enya's job was to write and perform music for the series. The music
was liked so much that the BBC decided to release a selection as an
independent record, before the series was broadcast. She played nearly
all the instruments on the album, sometimes doubling up as many as
eighty voices to create her characteristic sound and ethereal* voices,
dreamlike and enchanting. The Celts was first shown in 1987 and a
selection of its music was released under the title Enya, giving the
artist her first album.
Her music has appeared in many more hit films, including "L.A.
Story", "Green Card", "Toys", the TomCruise/Nicole Kidman film
"Far and Away" and Martin Scorcese's "Age Of Innocence". Enya's
new song 'Only Time' features in the film "Sweet November", starring
Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves. In 2001 she records 2 new songs
for Lord of the Rings soundtrack, "Aniron" and "May It Be". She has
made appearances at benefits* and has played for the Pope, the King of
Sweden and the Queen of England.
In 2002 Enya got a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for "Best
Original Song" with May It Be. She wins a new Grammy Award* for
"Best New Age* Album" with A Day without Rain. She also wins
three World Music Awards: "Best-Selling Female Artist", "Best-
Selling New Age Artist" and "Best-Selling Irish Artist", and gets the
award for "Best Pop-Rock Single" with Only Time in the Echo Awards
(Germany).
Since the 1980s, when she left Clannad, Eithne Ni Bhraonain has
sold more than 52 million albums, which makes her Ireland's top-
selling solo artist ever. Her worldwide album sales rates show no sign
of slowing down. Her US sales are not far behind those of Madonna.
She is a millionaire, and her personal wealth is growing. Enya now
lives in Killiney, a coastal district on the southern outskirts of Dublin,
where she bought a castle.
However, Enya's success is not something which just fell into her
lap*. It is the result of extremely hard work. Though firmly placed in
the global megastar category, there is nothing of a star about her.
Anybody who knows Enya knows she hasn’t changed because of the
success. It's probably because she comes from a very good family
background. She is gentle, friendly and modest, and a little shy. Small
and pretty, with wide deep eyes, Enya talks to you with her low and
calm voice. "It's wonderful that people listen to my songs", she says.
"A man once wrote that I saved his marriage through music. He
and his wife had stopped talking to each other. They’d lost control of
their world. He bought my album Watermark and they started to listen
to the soothing music, and then they started to talk. Through that
conversation, they started to rediscover each other and their

«Melody is the soul of my song»

Enya’s first love is music and melody and she remembers, as a


child of three or four, hearing her mother sing Irish melancholy
lullaby songs. "It was such a soothing sound," she says. "I don't know
how should I feel if I heard them now, but it is a fond memory." Later,
she sang beautiful and mystic Irish songs with her brothers and sisters.
Even now, she doesn't consider herself a rockstar at all. "My music",
she explains, "mixes ancient Irish songs with modern electronic
acoustics to gladden the spirit." With her blend of folk melodies,
synthesized backdrops and classical motifs, Enya created a unique
style that critics labeled as "New Age". Based on ancient musical
heritage, her music is not mainstream in contemporary pop industry,
but it is loved by both old and young people.
What does it means for Enya to compose music? As a composer,
she takes her inspiration from her emotions, from a secret and magic
connection with nature. "I have to sit and record any idea I have
whether it is the piano, the synthesiser or the voice and then listen back
to it. At the beginning, I write the melody. The melody then dictates
the mood, the lyrics, and the arrangement."
Although she composes initially on piano, the genius of Enya's
music lies in the multilayered electronic sounds that provide texture*
and atmosphere. "We found in using digital synthesizers that the music
gets a bit linear and dull. That's why the vocals – the multitrack vocals
– are so important. They really give the human element and the mood
and the feel to the music."
"I like to use the voice as an instrument. Nicky and I have worked
six years with this multivocal idea, and there's still a lot more to
develop," she says. "To be able to express feelings through music and
to be able to share it with the public is a wonderful feeling for me."
The mystery surrounding her creative inspiration is increased by
the fact that some of her pieces were written in Irish and some in Latin.
"It's really dictated from the melody," she says. "In 'Na Laetha Geal
M'Oige', for example, it would be difficult to sing in any other
language, because of the particular Irish character it has. And when we
came to 'Cursum Perficio', we wanted to make the voices sound as in a
choral piece.
To achieve her unique, layered sound, Enya spends hours and
hours in the studio, overdubbing countless tracks. Every voice, every
instrument, every sound on her songs is her own. "I actually get
hypnotized with singing the same part over and over again," she says,
"but I’m used to* concentrating so hard that it's often quite relaxing.
Some tracks have hundreds of voices just for one effect. I might sing
the same note, with the same sound, 16 times, then repeat for six-part
harmonies - just for one little section."
Enya is a gifted stylist working in a new genre. Her songs are
created in the private, shut-away world of her own personal high-tech
recording studio at her home in Killiney. Her famous layered sound
requires her to sing even the smallest vocal part possibly hundreds of
times over.
But after some 15 years labouring in the studio, Enya is
considering the possibility of performing live again. Pressure* for a
live show is growing from both her record company and fans. But the
logistics* would be immense. A live show will require a symphony
orchestra and several choirs.
Enya also is one of the most commercially successful examples of
the trend toward spiritually soothing music, a trend that also includes
such internationally acclaimed artists as Enigma, Deep Forest, Loreena
McKennitt, Enya's former colleagues Clannad, and others.
"People are looking for some kind of spiritual root," says Nicky
Ryan, Enya's producer and co-manager. "And maybe they're
completely overdosed with aggression and high-powered music, and
they look for something more gentle."
After the horror of September 11, US turned to Enya for comfort.
Americans are finding solace* in Enya's dreamy music and she's
moving swiftly up the album charts. She currently resides at number
two. Her dreamy New Age music is the anthitesis of everything nasty
and unpleasant in the world.
Right now, she is near the top of the US charts partly because CNN
used a song from her most recent album as a backdrop to their pictures
of the Twin Towers attack. But CNN's use of the song 'Only Time'
sparked a new wave of interest. To the traumatised viewing public, it
was a soothing counterpoint* to the shocking images on their screens.
Enya's sound is precisely the sort of reassuring, comfort music with
which many Americans are now trying to forget the awfulness of
September 11 and its dangerously uncertain aftermath*

Wolodymyr Kolesnyk

Wolodymyr Kolesnyk was the former principal choirmaster,


conductor, artistic director and director of one of the largest theatres of
the world - the Taras Shevchenko State Academic Theatre of Opera
and Ballet in Kyiv, capital of Ukraine. Born in Dnipropetrovsk in
1928, Kolesnyk graduated with distinction from Kyiv's Tchaikovsky
State Conservatory in 1952, having completed a conducting course
under professor Hryhoriy Veriovka. In 1949, while still a third year
student at the conservatory, he was invited to the Kyiv Opera Theatre
as an assistant choirmaster. In 1954, he was appointed chief
choirmaster of the Opera's chorus, which consisted of nearly 100
singers.
Maestro Kolesnyk's participation in a production of M.V.
Lysenko's opera Rizdviana Nich (Christmas Night) in 1958 marked his
debut as the conductor of the Kyiv Opera. Over the years, he was the
producer and conductor of state concerts given on occasions of cultural
and community significance: the finest orchestras, choirs and soloists
from across Ukraine were invited to these concerts. Kolesnyk
conducted in the many theatres and concert halls of Ukraine, and in the
Theatre of the Kremlin Palace of Congresses in Moscow.
In early 1969, Wolodymyr Kolesnyk assumed one of the most
prestigious posts in the Ukrainian musical world - that of General
Director and Artistic Director of the capital's opera. Nearly 900
individuals worked under his command.
In the forum of international artistic exchange, Maestro Kolesnyk
performed with many of the world's leading singers, including Jan
Pierce, Blanche Tibom, Jerome Hines, Joseph Rouleaux, Shirley
Verrett, and Teresa Stratas.
During 23 years of creative work in the leading musical theatre of
Ukraine, Maestro Kolesnyk mastered an extensive repertoire which
includes over eighty operas of both classical and modern composers.
He worked with K. Dankevych, V. Huberenko, B. Liatoshynsky, H.
Maiboroda, V. Shebalin and D. Shostakovych on productions of their
works, and on operatic screen adaptations. He conducted virtually all
of the Ukrainian classical and contemporary works that were in the
repertoire of the Kyiv Opera at the time. These included A. Hulak-
Artemovsky's Zaporozhets' za Dunaiem (The Cossack Beyond the
Danube); M. Lysenko's Natalka Poltavka, Rizdviana Nich (Christmas
Night) and Taras Bul'ba; K. Dankevych's Bohdan Khmel'nyts'kyi; H.
Maiboroda's Arsenal and Taras Shevchenko; and others.
Wolodymyr Kolesnyk edited two anthologies in the series Khory z
Ukrains'kykh Oper (Choral Pieces of the Ukrainian Opera). His other
musical accomplishments include producing several musical films;
recording operatic works for the "Melodiya" label; writing articles and
reviews for periodicals; teaching conducting at the Kyiv Pedagogical
Institute and the Kyiv State Conservatory (where he was given the
honorary title of lecturer); and various community projects. In 1960, in
tribute to his prolific artistic career, Maestro Kolesnyk was named
"Distinguished Artist of the State." His other awards include the title
"Laureate of an All-Union Contest," given to him for his participation
in a production of S. Prokofiev's War and Peace and H. Maiboroda's
Mylana.
After 1973, Maestro Kolesnyk had continued his versatile musical
career outside of the Soviet Union. He conducted at the Sydney Opera
House and appeared in radio concerts with the Adelaide and Perth
symphony orchestras in Australia. He performed with the American
Symphony Orchestra at New York's Carnegie Hall, and with
symphony orchestras at Chicago's Civic Opera House and Orchestra
Hall.
Wolodymyr Kolesnyk has also accomplished many significant
creative achievements in Canada, his place of permanent residence. He
staged A. Vakhnianyn's opera Kupalo, Hulak-Artemovsky's
Zaporozhets' za Dunaiem and Lysenko's Natalka Poltavka with the
Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association, whose artistic director and
conductor he was from 1977. He performed Kupalo and Zaporozhets'
za Dunaiem with the Edmonton-based Dnipro Choir. He also made
numerous concert appearances with symphony orchestras in
prestigious concert halls in Toronto, Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal
and Ottawa. Maestro Kolesnyk conducted the first performances
outside the Soviet Union (in Toronto, New York, Chicago and
Cleveland) of Liudkevych's Kavkaz (Caucasus) cantata-symphony and
of other operatic and symphonic works by classical and modern
composers. He conducted the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in a
radio broadcast. He also conducted the North American premieres of
George Fiala's Fourth Symphony and Concerto for Piano; Serge
Yeremenko's Zavoiovnyky Prerii (Conquerors of the Prairies); Marian
Kouzan's Neofity (The Neophytes); and symphonic works and excerpts
from operas by M. Arkas, V. Homoliak, M. Kalachevsky, V. Kikta, M.
Lysenko, H. Maiboroda and H. Zhukovsky.
In releasing and recording Dmytro Bortniansky's 35 choral
concertos, Maestro Kolesnyk attained a goal he had set for himself
many years ago: to return the spiritual heritage of Dmytro Bortniansky
to his people. To achieve this end*, Kolesnyk set himself the task of
forming the Ukraine Millennium Foundation, locating the originals of
Bortniansky's works in the British Museum in London; organizing and
assembling a choir of appropriate voices; and learning and exploring
the poetic and musical texts with singers on contract from many states
of the United States and many provinces of Canada. The road was not
an easy one, but the maestro was successful in releasing and recording
Bortniansky's concertos, and in performing them at Toronto's Roy
Thomson Hall on July 28, 1985 and July 26, 1987. This marked the
first time in the history of Ukrainian musical performance that all 35 of
Dmytro Bortniansky's religious concertos for choir were performed in
the order the composer had set during his lifetime, and according to the
original text.
Untill his passing, Maestro Kolesnyk was the Artistic Director of
the Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association in Toronto, Canada, and
of the Taras Shevchenko Bandurist Capella in Detroit, USA. He was
also the principal lecturer of a seminar school for conductors. He
devoted his talent and his knowledge to the development and
