Narrative Week 8

This week was like most weeks. Every day we took attendance, we would lead the

students in their warm-up activities, and then we would let the kids play. Monday and Tuesday

of the week, we were short a lot of the eighth graders. This was due to their field trip visiting

Baldwin High School. From what the students told me, they seemed to enjoy it, and they are

excited to see what is in store for them in the future.

As previously said last week, we just finished our units on whiffle ball and kickball. They

took a test last Thursday which Coach Peterson and I have both been working on grading this

week. It still surprises me how much students are unwilling to try when they have a study guide

with all the answers. Inevitably, this week we started two new sports – handball and netball.

These sports basically combine ultimate football and basketball into one sport. Handball was just

to introduce the concept of the new sport, and then netball allows the players to add some

differing rules. In both sports, the players use a mini basketball. Handball is most similar to

ultimate football where players are not allowed to move once passed the ball. However, a few

main differences are every player must touch the ball and to score a goal you must make it into

the basketball hoop. If you drop a pass, it is not an automatic turnover, and you are allowed to

resume play. Netball is the same idea and rules; however, players are allowed to either take three

steps or dribbles when passed to. Instead of shooting the ball into the basket, players must score

against a goalie.

The students did not like the sports at first, because it was a new game to almost all of

them. Many were not used to the size of the basketball, and they could not grasp all of the

concepts immediately. However, once they got the hang of the sports, most of them seemed to

really enjoy it. It even got students who normally sit out to participate. It is always rewarding and
encouraging seeing students active and passionate about the sport when I can tell PE is not their

number one choice of class.
