Track 8:

[K = Kevin; O = Olivia]
K: What are you watching, Olivia?
O: Oh, hi, Kevin. Big Brother. Haven’t you ever seen it?
K: Well, I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never watched it. What is it exactly?
O: It’s a reality TV show. I’m really surprised you haven’t seen it.
K: Well, I don’t have a TV, remember?
O: Oh yeah. Well, what happens is a group of people who don’t know each other live in
a house, which is totally isolated from the outside world, but they’re watched and
filmed 24 hours a day by hidden cameras.
K: What’s the point?
O: Well, it’s a competition. Each week someone must leave the house. The housemates
each say – in private – which two people they want to leave the house, then the public
votes and the person with the biggest number of votes must leave. It’s been a huge
success in almost 70 different countries.
K: Isn’t it really boring just watching people doing everyday things?
O: It’s just really interesting to watch how different the people are, and how they get
along really well with some people, but not with others. Some of the people have a lot
in common and hit it off immediately, but others argue about the cooking or the
housework. It’s hilarious, actually.
K: So, what’s happening right now in the house?
O: Well, they’ve all been living in the house for five weeks now. There are ten people
left, and they’ve been having a lot of arguments because one of the housemates is
very messy and this annoys the others. They’ve been saying that he’s selfish and
thoughtless. And Lydia really likes Craig, but Craig’s interested in Becki.
K: It sounds quite interesting, actually. Do you mind if I watch with you?
O: No, sit down! It’s absolutely fascinating!
