In an article titled, “Should we teach computer science in Elementary School?” by Pat

Yongpradit, the reading starts out by assisting the common idea that teaching computer science

is for career development. From there, the text adds more reasons as to why we should be

teaching computer science, a briefing on whether it is too early for the students to learn, and then

the article concludes with an elaboration about students not being the ones stopping computer

science. The article discusses the many resources that technology has brought to the table and

how they have helped students express their learning in many different ways. The author

addresses sources that have recently come out with new developments to help students learn in

all different styles. The author also addresses the idea that inorder for teachers to teach computer

science to elementary students, they need to be able to understand it.

Although the article uses multiple sources and sites specific companies working in the

field of computer science, it does seem as if the author is doubting the reader throughout most of

the writing. The article seems persuasive in favor of teaching computer science, however, it is

also loaded with questions to the reader that seem as if the author is doubting the readers

capabilities. This could potentially lead to the reader being more in favor of not teaching

computer science. It was a highlight of the article for the author to address more than just career

development as a benefit of teaching computer science. By writing that students could learn

different methods of demonstrating their thinking, test taking strategies, and problem solving; the

article hooks the reader in, as these are not the typical topics covered when discussing computer

science. Although I, personally, thought that the article was doubting the reader, I think that it

addresses some very critical points in the idea of teaching computer science in the elementary

classroom. I also appreciated how the author started the article with a question that most teachers

are searching to find an answer for. The main idea that was presented was that computer science

should be taught in the elementary classroom and that teachers should learn how to teach

computer science. Overall, this is the main idea that we were looking for. However, the author

also presents the ideas of different organizations making way in the world of technology. The

text also approaches the idea that common core testing is switching to a digital format, therefore

teaching students that technology is not only a resource and fun, but it is also a tool. The author

also brings a critical point up about students being able to demonstrate their learning in multiple

ways, this elaborates on the different learning styles and expands the mind of students to all

different types of learning. Overall, there were points in the article that seemed hurtful for a

teachers perspective, however, the author does a wonderful job of surrounding the article with

strong points and facts.
