1 Support
The essence of the milieu supports a community of individuals whose common goals are
recovery from substance dependence and repairing the emotional, physical, economical,
legal, social and spiritual damage that substance dependence has caused in their lives. To
accomplish these goals, the members of the treatment team are emotionally open,
trusting, respectful, responsible, accountable and open communication. The power of a
community built to provide such interventions, from clinical staff to fellow patients and
everyone in between, ensures every social interaction provides an opportunity for growth
in recovery.
Instead of just telling patients to get better, the program focuses on helping the patients
build a relationship with their cares and peers. It helps teach them it’s okay to ask for help
when they’re need it and how to accept it. So, if they ever need help, even after their
recovery, they’ll be able to navigate their feelings to a point where they can get it.
One of the most significant components of milieu therapy is socialization. They help
patients by introducing them to positive environments and helping them socialize outside
of the program on their own. Finally, one of the essential aspects of milieu therapy is that
everything takes place in a safe and supported environment so that one can return to
everyday life feeling elevated.
3.2 Structures
Provide daily routine for the patient with substance use disorder. This structure
will help the healing process of the patient better. The patient will know what to expect
throughout the day and for that reason, patient can focus their mind and energy only in
making positive changes in their daily lives. Consistency of this daily routine can provide
or contribute to the health improvement of the patient. Make sure the patient has positive
environment because environment has a big factor contributing to substance user. This
will help in building trust and being comfortable if the patient has positive environment.

3.3 Validation
Developing an appropriate, safe and protected environment is an important
element of healing. Rebuilding relationships that have been harmed by drug use disorders
can take time. The foundation is built on actually listening to and validating others'
experiences. Learn how to embrace sobriety and have the courage and tools to do so.
You're confirming that the story has been heard and comprehended. It's likely that if you
validate their feelings, they'll be more open to comprehending your perspective.
Validation aids in the resolution of conflict and misunderstanding.

It’s important to avoid the desire to become defensive or make rationalizations for the
event being discussed.
3. 4 Involvement
These are often regular routines that encourage socialization. Where necessary, therapists
can help members learn new methods to reciprocate and develop friendships.
Within milieu therapy, creating a treatment environment that is safe, predictable and empathetic
helps the client develop strong friendships within their peer groups. New friendships nurture a
new sense of competence and success.
Encouraged the client to go to church, join a club or group, chat on line, call a friend on the
phone, or hang out with friends are all means of socialization. These are the activities that banish
loneliness feelings and promote the sense of safety, belonging and enjoyment that helps people
to feel secure. It helps the client discover and build on current interests and passions. During
these activities, clinicians and educators engage with the client to ensure all interactions are
positive and supportive. When needed, client may also receive coaching on how to initiate,
reciprocate and sustain friendly exchanges.

3. 5 Containment
Milieu therapy environments have various limiting rules. These rules are
consistent and communicated clearly to people enrolled in the therapy treatment
These components ensure that the people receiving treatment follow a similar
approach to treatment. They also help create self-sustaining environments that can
continuously promote stable mental health even in the absence of care.
