Art of exploration

Grade level: Kindergarten

Target Audience: Individual students.
Concept: Varied art materials will be given out to the students. The goal is to have students express
themselves through any form of art. Students have access to a variety of art materials. The following
items will be incorporated in the teacher created materials; different paper textures, different sized
paintbrushes, washable mess free paint, crayons, markers, colored pencils, and anything extra upon
child request. Students will share their artwork with the class the following day during circle time. This
activity builds confidence and reinforces the idea that art is subjective and there is no correct or wrong
way for students to express themselves creatively through art. This activity also strengthens students’
creativity and expression through the form of art.

TEK: (2) Creative expression. The student communicates ideas through original artworks using a variety
of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging
the imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem-
solving skills. The student is expected to: (C) use a variety of materials to develop manipulative skills
while engaging in opportunities for exploration through drawing, painting, printmaking, constructing
artworks, and sculpting, including modeled forms.

Objective: Students will be able to investigate and manipulate different art mediums with a variety of
materials to express themselves while developing their creative imagination.

Student Target: I will be able to express my creativity through different art forms with different art
mediums in order to develop my creative imagination.

Needed Materials: different paper textures, different sized paintbrushes, washable mess free paint,
crayons, markers, colored pencils, stickers, ziplock bags and anything extra upon child request.

Implementation: This will be used towards the end of the year and will be assigned in class for the
students. Each student will be given a ziplock bag filled with different art materials. Students are
encouraged to explore using all the materials but are not required to do so. Students will be tasked with
creating an art piece that best expresses their creativity. There is no limits on creativity however,
students must show the use of appropriate fine-motor skills. This art piece is a reflection of themselves
and must somehow relate back to the individual. The following day after all projects have had the
proper amount of dry time, they will be shared with the class during circle time to be admired and
encouraged by their peers. The art piece must show clear signs of effort and thought.
