Parent Participation
Before a student receives special education
services, the parents/guardians must sign
on. They’re equal participants in the
process and must give permission for the
evaluation, participate in the development
of the IEP, and agree to any changes that

Child find: By law, schools districts
are required to seek out every child

Free Appropriate Public
Education (FAPE)
All students in the United States have the right
to receive and education. Special education
students are provided assessments, instruction,
special transportation, etc. at no cost to the
parents/guardians. The education being taught
must allow for progress to be made and is
tailored to the specific needs of the student. If
the student needs more support than what the
school can provide, the district must pay to
cover the cost of those services.
Least Restrictive
Environment (LRE)
Overall, this determines where the
student with a disability will receive
his or her education. An LRE requires
the student to be educated with their
chronologically aged peers to the
greatest extent possible (usually a
general education classroom). Usually,
the student needs to fully participate
academically and socially. All the
support must be provided to the
student within the general education
classroom.
