ACTIVITY A
1. Television has been evolving for around three quarters of a century. Order the
following words/phrases chronologically.
• colour TV • high definition • black and white • three-dimensional • remote control

1. __________ 2. __________ 3. __________ 4. __________ 5. __________

2. In about 20-30 words, identify four types of programmes you can watch on TV.

ACTIVITY B
Read the following text.

TODAY’S TV
A FALSE REALITY
Think back to middle school, when it all began. People were getting excited about the
new show, American Idol, and the recently popularized, Survivor. These “reality” television
shows became more popular as the years went by, and now it’s hard to find something
that isn’t in the category popularly known as Reality TV. There are even subcategories: for
the fashionistas – Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model; the athletic – American 5

Gladiator; and those who just love to gape at how the rich and famous spend their money –
The Real Housewives.
Although the people on screen may be in controlled environments and the editing taken
to the extreme, people love to tune in and think to themselves: Hey, maybe I could be the
next American Gladiator or a millionaire’s wife. Viewers relax in the comfort of their home 10

as participants are put through week after week of increasingly difficult tasks, argue with
other participants, and make fools of themselves on public television. Gradually, viewers
show their preference for a certain contestant, joining their fan site on Facebook, and
maybe even coming to adopt some of their tendencies.
Can all of this TV be too much? Sure it was fun at first, but how many new topics can 15

TV producers come up with that will attract the viewers? They’re already reaching for such
strange “entertainment” as The Biggest Loser, a show during which spectators eat ice
cream and popcorn at home while the people on screen run around and get excited when
they go from 256 to 250 pounds.
20
It is certain that our culture encourages gossiping, but this new cultural obsession with
other people’s lives is making it difficult for quality series such as Law and Order and 24 to
stay on the air. These programs are moved to obscure times or go off the air completely to
make room for more reality shows.
Hopefully, like love-themed game shows of the sixties, reality TV is a phase that will soon die 25
out. Viewers will turn to better programs, which create characters with normal, functioning
relationships, jobs, and interests. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait out the storm.

The Internet
What is the Internet?
It’s millions of computers that are linked by telephone lines. It brings together people, homes, schools
and businesses around the world. The US Army started the Internet in 1969. It was a way of
protecting their computer systems. If their enemies destroyed one group of computers, the Internet
5
helped the US Army to continue by using other computers.

Is the Web different from the Internet?

The World Wide Web (www) is one part of the Internet. It is a network of pages that are on
computers around the world. They make the Internet fun and interesting to explore. They use a
programming language called html (invented by an Englishman called Tim Berners-Lee) which
10
allows pictures and words to appear on computer screens.

Is it safe to surf the Net?

Surfing the Net can be dangerous because some adults use chatrooms on the Internet to make
friends with young people because they want to hurt them. In July 2003 a 12-year-old girl, Shevaun
Pennington, disappeared with a 31-year-old American man whom she had met on the Internet. She’s
now safe with her parents but many people are worried about this problem. In September 2003 15

Microsoft closed its chatrooms to protect young people. Also, the British government is changing the
law so that adults who do this go to prison for five years.

2. Look at the pictures and identify four negative aspects of the Internet. Write
between 20-30 words.

ACTIVITY B
Read the following text.

CYBERBULLYING

Black letters flash across the screen, launching an attack of rumors and insults. A text, a
Facebook wall post, a Tweet – a line or two is all it takes to wound someone’s self-esteem, to
bring tears, to ruin a friendship. With the explosion of modern technology, old-school bullying
5 is out and a new type of bullying is taking the stage. But while stuffing someone in a locker is
a pretty obvious sign of harassment, with no bruises or bloody noses as evidence of abuse,
cyberbullying often doesn’t raise alarms until it’s too late.
When asked to define “cyberbullying,” most students find it difficult because it may take
many forms. In fact, commentary and criticism are common on the Web.
When “George” posted comments about other students on Twitter, he didn’t intend it to
10 be an attack. “I just thought it was funny,” he says. “When I wrote it, I thought that the
people I wrote about weren’t going to see it because I know who follows me, but it got
around.”
George doesn’t fit the mold of a typical bully. In fact, when he heard that his comments
had spread beyond his Twitter circle, he was surprised and embarrassed. With voices and
faces hidden in an artificial cyber-world, many forget that words are very real.

25
PROGRESS TEST

31

Though he’s now rethinking his comments, George defines cyberbullying with one main
distinction: intent. “I would say cyberbullying is when you intentionally attack someone, and
directly say something mean or hurtful,” he says.
An unintentionally mean Twitter comment may or may not be cyberbullying, but that
doesn’t make it any less hurtful and it has consequences. You may feel that when it comes to
cyberbullying, it simply takes a click of the power button to zap away the negative effects, but
it isn’t always that easy.

COMING TO AMERICA
Yuki Suto from Japan

Coming to America has changed my life. When I was a high school student, going to
America was my dream. I wanted to study English and American culture and I wanted to see
what I could do by myself in a very different environment.
5 These are the most important reasons why I decided to come here. I wasn’t interested in
college in Japan at all. It is very difficult to enter university in Japan but easy to graduate, so
students don’t study much after they enter. This was also one of the reasons why I came to
America.
However, when I told my parents that I wanted to go to the USA, they didn’t allow me to
10 go there. Then I kept on explaining why I wanted to go, and we talked about it every day.
Finally, they understood and allowed me to go.
I came here this June. I have been here around five months. When I first came here, I
was very surprised. There are many differences between Japan and America. Japan is a
very little country compared to America. I feel everything is big here. There are various kinds
of people here. It’s very strange and interesting.
15
I was also very upset because everything is in English. Whenever I watch TV, go
shopping, or even take a walk, I hear only English. It was strange and hard for me because I
couldn’t understand English at all back then. Now my ears are used to hearing English, so
it’s getting better.
20 After I came here, I realised how much I love my family, how difficult it is to live by myself,
how exciting it is to live in another country, and how important it is to do what I want to do. If
I didn’t come here, maybe I wouldn’t realise these things. This is the most important
experience in my life. I’m going to stay here about three years and I’m sure I’ll never forget
this time in the USA.

K: I had very short hair and I liked it. I made the mistake of dying it blue-black but that was
horrible.
J: Do you have any advice for readers who want to be singers?
K: I don’t have an answer. It will happen if it’s right for you. I don’t have a ‘step one’, you do this, and 20

‘step two’, you do that. I don’t live my life like that, so I can’t tell someone else to.

STREET FASHION

Instead of being styled by designers and presented by models on Parisian runways,

street fashion has emerged from the streets, associated to youth culture. Street fashion is
not specific to one type of dressing, but it covers many different styles, all unique in the fact
that they were created and styled by the young people who wear them.
5 This style has begun to influence the creators of high fashion. The tight-fitted jeans once
worn only by punks now are a common element in high fashion designer wear. Similarly, the
hippie, loose-flowing dresses are being redirected in the fashion set.
Hip hop fashion, with its origins in street fashion, has now translated itself into a multi-
billion dollar industry. While now considered an iconic style, it still continues to be a
10 statement of the music culture from which it originated.

Famous designers have incorporated this fashion into their design lines. Ralph
Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein, among others, feature street fashion trends
in their designs and have brought the style to another level by allowing it to influence
dress and formal wear.
Although largely influenced by American youth, street fashion can be seen
throughout the world, as each and every culture has young people who want to make a 10

statement. This statement is often made by the clothes chosen by a given generation.
Every decade, which produces a new crop of youth, has notable street fashion
uniquely generated by it.

LEVI’S GOES DETOX

Levi Strauss & Co. today are committed to go toxic-free. The world’s biggest denim
brand joins ten other clothing companies that have committed to Detox, a global movement
for fashion without pollution.
Levi’s commitment comes eight days after we launched our campaign in Mexico,
5 showing a documentary about a family struggling to hold factories in the region to account
for the pollution they are causing, including suppliers of brands like Levi’s.
This commitment from Levi’s is great news for the environment. Levi’s will begin
requiring its largest suppliers in China, Mexico and other countries to reveal pollution data.
This means that those living near all these places will have access to important information
10 about discharges into their local environment. In addition, the company has decided to use
non-hazardous chemicals.
More than 400,000 people have joined the Detox campaign, demanding toxic-free
fashion and clean water. Fashionistas, activists, designers and bloggers took action on

The rising tide of people power has again shown what it’s capable of. But unfortunately

situation.

EATING LESS MEAT CAN HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT

by Anne Englebert

The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) found that current production levels of meat
contribute between 14% and 22% of the greenhouse gases the world produces every year.
More than transportation or industry, meat production has the strongest environmental impact, and
is very likely responsible for global warming, deforestation, waste, water and soil erosion and hunger for
5 1 billion human beings. These are environmental facts that we don’t really think of when we are eating
a good hamburger, but eating less meat can really help save the environment.
Factory farming requires large quantities of land, which causes land degradation such as
desertification, soil quality decline and deforestation. Approximately 70% of previously forested land in
the Amazon is now used as pasture.
10 Moreover, the destruction of forests contributes to the loss of biodiversity by the disappearance of
plants and animal species.
Producing meat requires much more water than any other agricultural activity and animal waste such
as manure accounts for a major source of pollutants.
