EXERCISE 1: At the restaurant. Put the conversation in order. Clue: this is a


conversation between three people.

* I ordered a vegetarian pasta, but this has ham in it!


* Excuse me?
* I’m terribly sorry, I don’t know what went wrong. Let me take those dishes back to the
kitchen.
* Yes madam, what seems to be the problem?
* Yes, and I’m afraid I wanted my steak medium-rare, but this one is well done.

EXERCISE 2: At the hotel. Change the verbs in the brackets to the past simple.

1. Housekeeping _________________ ( do not clean) my room.


2. I ______________________ (request) a wake-up call, but nobody _________(call)
me.
3. I’m afraid I ________________ (miss) breakfast. Can you recommend another
place to get a bite?
4. I ________________ (order) room service an hour ago. Is it ready?
5. I ________________ (put) my valuables in the room safe, but a thief
__________(break) in and _______________ (steal) them.

6. I’m so sorry to hear that. What __________________ (they take)?

EXERCISE 3: At the airport. Change the sentences in the conversations from the
present to the past tense where necessary.

A: My suitcase doesn’t appear on the conveyor belt.


B: What is your flight number?
A: BA 316 from London.
B: I’m sorry, but it seems your suitcase isn’t loaded onto the plane at Heathrow.

C: How is your flight?


D: It is terrible.
C: How so?
D: The food is awful, we experience a lot of turbulence, and I feel airsick.
C: Aw, that’s too bad!

EXERCISE 4: Talk about it.

Did anything bad ever happen to you at a restaurant, hotel or airport? What
happened? What did you do about it? Did the problems get solved?
