dedicate to that community, but also to anyone who has any kind of a weight on

feeling like they need that, is welcome to run with it.”

1d) Please continue to use your solfege hand signs and repeat after me.

4 Minutes: Activity 9: Musical Phrasing Discussion

1a) Musical phrasing is the way a musician shapes a sequence of notes in a
passage of music to allow expression.

1a) Much like when speaking English, a phrase may be written identically but may
be spoken differently and is named for the interpretation of small units of time
known as phrases.

1a) If you are wearing tennis shoes, like Converse or Vans, why do you think it is
so important to use musical phrasing when singing?

1a) We do this to relay an impression or emotion. Phrasing is important in music -

the crescendos, the tone quality, and note values - all of these things work
together to create a sense of emotion for the audience. Musicians do this really
well, especially in the context of a symphony with dozens of other moving parts.
Musical phrasing, of course, is how we musicians shape and color the note
sequence in a musical passage.

1a) If you are wearing blue jeans today, how are some ways we can musically
shape the phrases we sing?

3 Minutes: Activity 10: Musical Phrasing

1s) Thank you all for your insights and thoughts!

1a) The text and music have to lead somewhere, which is why when adding text
to music, we need to give the lyrics and music life through the use of phrasing.
Pretend you have a rubber band in your hands.

1d) We’re going to use this imaginary rubber band to physically and visually
remind us to shape our musical phrases.

1d) Repeat after me: (mm 5-11)

1a) The phrasing we used from measures 5-11 creates emotion and tension and is
what propels us into the Chorus at measure 12.

1a) Let’s begin at the beginning and use our expanded ribcage and supported
breath to sing these musical phrases to bring the text alive.

1d) I will accompany you on the piano and we will stop at measure 11.

1 Minute: Activity 11: Run mm 1-11

1 Minute Activity 12: Phrasing the Chorus

3a) Beautiful phrasing and singing!
