The most important thing you need to understand when it comes to diet is that the
calories are important, but there are multiple factors which need to be taken care of when
you talk about diet planning as such, before the calories are even considered. That’s why
calorie counting is not given any major emphasis in the Genesis program.

Most important out of these is ‘NUTRITION’. If you are on a low-calorie diet and at the
same time not getting the daily nutrients needed by the body, then there is a problem.
Also, your diet has to be according to your taste buds with ample variety for you to enjoy
the food.

Remember the most important rule when it comes to diet: A DIET IS FOR LIFE,
EVERYTHING ELSE IS AN ADVENTURE.

If you cannot eat food, you could continue eating for life, then you are confused about
nutrition. Your genes, culture, taste buds etc. come first in the meals, not calories.

As a general rule, at least 80% of your diet should be your basic home food. Rest 20%
may vary with requirements.

Remember these 2 quotes when it comes to eating:

“A DIET IS FOR LIFE, NOT FOR A SHORT PERIOD”

“FOOD IS A PLEASURE OF LIFE, NOT A PUNISHMENT”

There are some very simple rules, which if you follow, you would not go wrong in terms
of planning your diet. Instead of knowing the never ending list of stuff which you should
not be consuming; it is better to choose the food groups which if you avoid will eliminate
most of the crap from your life automatically.

Here is the list of the food groups you should try and eliminate or minimize:

- Maida (refined carbohydrates)
- Sugar (specially added sugar)
- Most sugar containing beverages & foods
- Refined oils (cook in local unrefined oils like mustard, til, coconut, ghee, butter,
groundnut etc.)
- Excessive Fried foods
- Cornflakes, wheat flakes & other packaged breakfast cereals.
- Most processed & chemical laden packaged foods, which contain huge amount of
added sugars, preservatives, additives, colors etc.

Remember, there is a lot of difference in foods which are healthy and which are marketed
healthy. Most products in the market are marketed healthy, as they contain a large
amount of added sugar, salt, refined flour, chemicals, colours and additives, which are
extremely harmful for your body in the long run.

Here are some FOOD RULES. Use them and you will never ever go wrong:

1. EAT ACC. TO YOUR CULTURE & TRADITIONS – yes, your cultural food is still the
best food for you, irrespective of which culture you belong to.

Asian countries have one of the richest cultural and traditional heritage. Every
state has their own way of eating and consuming foods, and they have been doing
this since centuries.

Imposing industrial style fancy diets in the name of health and weight loss, has
somehow made the people doubt their own traditional way of eating. Remember,
you can only sustain a diet, which is similar to your cultural values. In simple terms,
what you have grown up eating. Rest everything is a short-term adventure.

Your ancestors were right not because they chose the right foods but because they
never had the option of choosing the wrong foods. Whatever was available was
pure, fresh and free of any chemicals & preservatives.

2. CLEAN YOUR HOUSE – Human psychology is not very strong when it comes to
making choices. When a food item is lying in front of you, even if you try and avoid
it eventually you may give in and eat it.

If some processed junk is kept in your refrigerator and cupboards, then inadvert-
ently, when you will feel hungry, you will reach out for these foods.

That’s the reason when you clean your house of all processed junk food from the
market like soft drinks, noodles, biscuits, artificial juices etc. you will be forced to
eat only the healthier stuff.

Stock your house with fresh natural whole foods, and you will always have healthy
foods to choose from.

3. HARA HACHI BU – this is a Japanese food rule which simply means eat till 80%
full. This is one of the best rules to follow. Do not eat till you’re full, eat till sat-
isfied. In simple words, you should have some hunger left in you, as you finish your
meal.

Also, the mind takes time to register the food you eat, so give it time. Eat slowly
and chew your food properly. We all know it, but somehow we don’t follow it.
