BIOMETHANATION TECHNOLOGY
BIOMETHANATION
Biomethanation is the process of conversion of organic matter in the waste (liquid or solid) to biomethane and
manure by microbial action in the absence of air. The components of Bio-methane are CH4 (55%-70%) & CO2
(25%-40%) and trace levels of other gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen
sulfide. The relative percentage of these gases in biogas depends on the feed material and management of the
process. Sources of Biomethane are from animal operations where manure can be collected and the Biomethane
is generated from anaerobic digesters where the manure decomposes.
Biomethane, after installation of the requisite equipment, is essentially free, as opposed to buying natural
gas. Bio-Methanogenesis is the production of CH4 and CO2 by biological processes that are carried out by
methanogens. Bio-methane is a renewable energy resource, as opposed to natural gas (methane), which is a non-
renewable energy resource. Bio-methane has similar qualities of methane and both are used in interchangeably,
and each may be a substitute for the other.
Organic matter + anaerobic bacteria ---- CH4 + CO2 + H2S+ NH3 + other end products + energy
The primary component of an AD system is the anaerobic digester, a waste vessel containing bacteria that digest
the organic matter in waste streams under controlled conditions to produce Biomethane. As an effluent, AD
yields nearly all of the liquid that is fed to the digester. This remaining fluid consists of mostly water and is
recycled to flush manure from the swine building to the digester.
ELECTRICITY GENERATION
Commercial electricity generation systems that use biogas typically consist of an internal combustion (IC)
engine, a generator, a control system. IC engines designed to burn propane or natural gas are easily converted
to burn Bio-methane by adjusting carburetion and ignition systems.
Such engines are available in nearly any capacity, but the most successful varieties are industrial engines that
are designed to work with wellhead natural gas. A biogas-fueled engine will normally convert 35 to 40 percent of
the biogas Btu value to electricity. Bio-methane based engines reject approximately 60 percent of the energy
input as waste heat.
• Many types of raw material (other than dung) can be used in the plant: Poultry droppings, Agro & Farm Waste,
Kitchen Waste, Vegetable & Fruit Market Waste, Food Processing Waste and other Bio Degradable Waste.
• It destroys Methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas with a heat trapping capacity of approximately 21
times that of carbon-di-oxide. It thus leads to reduction of global warming.
• Biogas plants also produce enriched organic manure. This can be used as fertilizers. Liquid slurry is rich in
micro & macro nutrients along with NPK and can be directly applied in fields. It leads to soil improvement due
to high nitrogen contents.
• Biogas as a gas provides improvement in the environment, sanitation and hygiene by proper management of
waste. It improves ground water quality as anaerobic digestion provides several water quality benefits.
• Biogas digesters can destroy more than 90% of disease causing bacteria that can otherwise enter surface
water. Thus it reduces risk to human and animal health.

GRID
1. RECEIVING TANK - The feed material like dung is gathered in the feed / mixing tank. Using sufficient water, the
material is thoroughly mixed till homogeneous slurry is formed. Manure is pumped from the receiving tank
into the digester. The slurry is moved into the digester through the inlet pipe.
2. DIGESTER – Inside the digester, the slurry is fermented. Biogas is produced through bacterial action.
Reinforced concrete digesters are heated to sustain an optimal environment for digestion of substrate by
bacteria. Temperature is maintained around 35°C.
3. AGITATOR - Agitators continuously mix the substrate, to sustain optimal bacterial proliferation and ensure
constant methane production and pathogen treatment.
4. DOUBLE MEMBRANE TOP BALLOON - To enable the gas generation to be evened out, so as to provide a
constant flow to power generation unit, a gas storage system is required. This storage unit acts as buffer
storage to match the load requirement with the generation rate of bio gas. The biogas thus formed gets
collected in the gas holder. It holds the gas till the time it is transported for consumption.
5. EFFLUENT BUFFER TANK: The slurry is discharged into the outlet tank. This is done through the outlet pipe
or the opening in the digester.
6. EXCESS GAS FLARING SYSTEM - The excess gas flaring system is provided to flare the bio gas when the
engine generator set is under maintenance & storage is full. As methane is a greenhouse gas and highly
flammable, it cannot be allowed to evacuate freely in to atmosphere.
7. H2S SCRUBBER – The Bio gas contains hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is a corrosive gas. The corrosion will
reduce the life of machinery involved in the system. Hence, level of hydrogen sulfide needs to be reduced.
Desulphurization reduces high levels of hydrogen sulphide – which is also a foul-smelling, toxic and corrosive
gas that can severely damage machinery and result in frequent mechanical failures.
8. BIOGAS ONLINE MONITORING: A monitoring device is fitted after the filters to gauge the quantum of
different gases H2S, CO2, CH4 and Moisture present in the gas.
9. GAS BASED POWER GENERATOR - Biogas is burned and converted into electrical and thermal energy. Biogas
is burned in an IC engine to produce electricity. Electricity is fed into the public grid and sold to the local
utility company. Heat is recovered from the exhaust of the engine with the use of waste heat recovery
system.
10. DECANTER CENTRIFUGE: Slurry from effluent buffer tank is passed through DECANTER CENTRIFUGE or
screw press for Separation of coarse solids from fine & liquid matter.
11. SETTLING AND AERATION TANK: Residual Slurry is made to pass through settling tank, aeration tank &
secondary clarifier for recycling to process again.
12. BAGGING MACHINE: Solid waste created in decanter centrifuge and Clarifier is passed through drying yard
and bagged.
13. SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISITION (SCADA) - System is implemented for the precise and
efficient control over plant process and to collect and store data generated from various field instruments
such as digester pressure transmitter, Sewage gas flow meter, on line CH4 and on line H2S analyzer, various
engine generator set parameters, etc.

INDUSTRY STATUS
The Gold Standard (GS) seeks to provide a credible but simple set of criteria that will provide integrity to the
voluntary carbon market. In particular, the GS will ensure that all project-based voluntary emission reductions
that are independently verified to meet its criteria – defined as Carbon credits - represent real, quantifiable,
additional and permanent project-based emission reductions.
The Gold Standard was established in 2003 by WWF and other NGO to provide assurance of integrity, effective
regulation and strong governance in carbon markets and, more broadly, to define, demonstrate and drive best
practice in international compliance carbon markets. It is the only ‘compliance grade’ standard also operating
in the voluntary market and is structured to operate as a genuine regulator on behalf of civil society in these
markets.
A project of 10500 CU M capacity will receive about 50,000 carbon credits per year for next 20 years. It will
mean a gain of Rs 80 Lakh per year at the present market rates of carbon credits.

Membrane gas holders are the most flexible, economical, reliable and efficient
biogas storage solution available in market. The membrane gas holder is
fundamental to the process of anaerobic digestion by ensuring a regular supply of
biogas availability for the rest of the plant to operate consistently and efficiently.
The constant pressure gas holders are designed to store the biogas made from
the anaerobic digestion of the organic waste and sludge. They are made with biogas
resistant PVC or Polyurethane two side coated polyester fiber reinforced
fabric membranes, welded with high frequency electronic machines.
Main Features:
High safety levels : Our patented system with 2 chambers and 3 overlapping membranes , avoid
in any case the formation of explosive mixture in the gas holder’s volume , because the biogas
chamber is completely divided from the air compensation chamber.
Membrane gas holders can be manufactured significantly faster than any other biogas storage
solution and in addition are resistant to the corrosive nature of H2S gas.
Low energy consumption : The compensation air blower unit starts only when the biogas is
going out from the gasholder to be used , while for the remaining time (when the gas is entering
in the gasholder ) is turned off.
The blower unit , with pressure control ,coupled to the pneumatic air and gas valves on the
gasholders , ensure the constant pressure of the biogas throughout all the filling emptying cycle.
The operational pressure control system only requires the air blower to operate when biogas is
being used and the gas holder will retain its pressure, shape and stability in the event of a power
failure.

The digested slurry can be fed directly to the crop through the irrigation channels or it can be stored and used
later whenever required. To derive maximum benefits from the stored digested slurry, it is essential to prevent
its exposure to the sun as any such exposure would result in loss of ammonical nitrogen content of the slurry. It
is advisable to dig, two or three manure pits near the biogas plant. The slurry is then carried and stored in these
pits which are covered with solid waste from the farm.
The fresh biogas slurry when used by mixing with irrigation water to growing crops gives better yields as
compared to other modes of its applications.
