Why do we need

Government?
Mind’s On Activity
● We are going to brainstorm why you think we need
government in order for a society to function.
● Discussion question: Poll: Do you think we need
government?
● What do you think of when you think of the
government?
Learning Goals
● I am able to explain why we need government
regulation.
● I understand why we need government regulation.
● I am able to identify areas in my life that the
government regulates.
Group Work
● In groups of three to four you will be going on a
government scavenger hunt, analyzing different
aspects of your life that the government regulates.
● Each group will be given one sheet of paper and a
chromebook.
● In your groups you will need to find five areas in our life
that are government regulated. You can choose any
five areas that interest you.
Group Work
● You will then:
● (1) Fill out the sector of society you chose to research.
● (2) Provide a brief explanation of how the government
regulates that sector.
● (3) As a group you will then imagine what would
happen IF the government did not regulate that
sector, How would society look like? How would it
affect you? Think of these questions as you explain
your imaginary scenario.
My Example: The
Garbage Sector
Sector: Waste Management (Garbage Collection)
Brief Explanation of government regulation:
All three levels of government regulate waste management.
Federal: In charge of how and where waste is disposed.
Provincial: Approves and monitors waste management
facilities.
Municipal: Manages the collection of waste
Scenario if the government did not regulate waste: There
would be more pollution then there is currently. There would
be garbage all over the streets creating an unsanitary living
environment. 6
Group Roles
1. The Facilitator: The person who is leading the discussion.
2. The recorder: The person who is writing down the
information the group is discussing.
3. The Time Keeper: The person who is keeping track of
time (approximately 5 minutes per sector you are
analyzing)
4. The presenter: The person who posts their sector on
PadLet and explains it to the class during group
discussion.
Group Work
● You will then post on the PadLet link one of the five
sectors you researched, your brief explanation and
your scenario if the government did not regulate that
sector.
● PadLet Link
● Each group will have 25 minutes to complete this task.
Discussion
1. Did you realize how many aspects of our
lives are regulated by the government? Did
this surprise you?
2. After completing this exercise and imagining
scenarios if the government did not regulate
these sectors, do you think we need
government? Why or why not?

Discussion
3. List or name things that the government
does for us that help us live a better life.
4. What crucial services does our
government provide when needed?

provide too many services for society?
