CREATING CHARACTERS LESSON PLAN

Teacher Candidate: Sabrina Otello Grade: 9

CURRICULUM AREA(S): English UNIT / THEME / ISSUE: Characterization

EXPECTATIONS:
 1.3: Identify the important ideas and supporting details in both simple and complex texts (e.g. select details from a story to create a profile
of a character in the story; use a graphic organizer to categorize the ideas in an article)
 Analyze texts in terms of the information, ideas, issues, or themes they explore, examining how various aspects of the texts contribute to
the presentation or development of these elements.

LEARNING GOALS:
 Connecting catholic faith to English literature and building characters.
 The students will read for meaning, using their skills they have developed from reading texts they will formulate a character that embodies the virtues
of Jesus Christ.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
 The evidence that will demonstrate the student’s success criteria is
A. If the students can accurately create a character that embodies the virtues of Jesus Christ
B. The student is able to present their character and engage in conversations with other students about the characters they created.

Time Instruction
9:00am-9:15am I would begin the lesson plan by describing characterization. What
components a good writer incorporates into a character:
Some examples:

Name
Personality
Weakness’
Strengths
Purpose

We will discuss why characterization is central to the storyline and the


overall success of the story.
9:15am-9:25am The theme of this lesson plan is to create a character that embodies the
qualities of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I will begin by putting on the board a brainstorm of what these qualities may
include, some possibilities:

Kindness
Strength
Leadership
Courage
Honesty

9:25am-10:15am After discussing characterization and the importance of creating a well-


rounded fully developed character for a storyline. The students will then
apply the discussion we had about the qualities of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ to create a protagonist character that embodies the Gospel of Jesus
Christ and the Virtues of Jesus.

The students must demonstrate how the protagonist they created is in


God’s own image and likeness.

The character must demonstrate a strong connection to community and


unity.

The purpose of this exercise is to humanize God and his teachings. The
students will be creating a character that embodies what all Catholic’s strive
to be.
