a day leads to meaningful gains in fitness and overall health.

● A recent study concluded that even just 4-second bursts of exercise have been shown to
improve fitness. Tara Parker-Pope. Published 2021. Accessed 2022

Types of Physical Activity Available

● Classroom based:

○ 5-20 min

○ Minimal structure and equipment

Classroom teachers include movement breaks into their daily schedules with the potential for improved
student academic and behavioral performance. Classroom movement can be done in short increments
(5-20 minutes), once or multiple times a day. Resources will be provided but minimal time and space are
needed for theses activities, ideal for the classroom.

● Recess

○ 15-30 min

○ Unstructured

○ Minimal equipment

Recess to students on a regular basis may benefit academic behaviors, while also facilitating social
development and contributing to overall physical activity and its associated health benefits. There was
no evidence that time spent in recess had a negative association with cognitive skills, attitudes, or
academic behavior.

● Physical Education

○ 30 min

○ Structured

○ Credentialed PE teacher

○ Equipment provided

Physical education should be available to all students, regardless of ability level. PE instructor must
provide developmental and chronological appropriate equipment and activities for students.

● Adapted Physical Education

○ 20-30 min

○ Small group or individual

○ Provided per student IEP requirements

Through formal assessments, students can be recommended to receive APE services. Per their IEP, APE
session frequency and specific goals will work on throughout the year. Students should be in their least
restrictive environment.
