Harshad Mehta scam:


In April 1992, journalist Sucheta Dalal exposed Harshad Mehta, who was involved in massive stock manipulation
through worthless bank receipts. Mehta was convicted for four of 27 charges and tried for nine years, till he died in
2001.

Satyajit Ray's Oscar win and his demise


In 1992, Satyajit Ray brought home an Academy Award - he was conferred with an Honorary Academy Award for
his work in cinema. But this was also the year that 'The Apu Trilogy' creator passed away due to a heart attack on
April 23. An author, music composer and illustrator, Ray was honoured the Bharat Ratna by the Government of
India.

Establishment of SEBI
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) came into existence in this year on April 22 through the SEBI
Act, 1992. The Board is the regulator of the securities market in the country and currently, is headquartered at
Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

USA - The largest shopping mall in the United States, the Mall of America, opened its doors to shoppers during August. The mall
originally covered over 78 acres and has since expanded to more than 96 acres. It is located in Bloomington, Minnesota just south of
Minneapolis and was built on the former site of Metropolitan Stadium. There are over 500 stores in the Mall which employ over 11,000
people. The Mall of America receives over 40 million visitors annually making it the largest tourist attraction in the Midwest.

Denmark - The Danish people vote against signing the Maastricht Treaty on June 2nd. It was a close vote with about 50.7% of voters
in Denmark rejecting the treaty and 49.3% supporting it, and a 83.1% voter turnout. The Maastricht Treaty aimed to integrate Europe and
create the legal framework for the establishment of the European Union. After the referendum failed, Denmark began negotiating with the
EU members and was granted four exceptions to the Maastricht Treaty in what was called the Edinburgh Agreement. The next year
Denmark held a new referendum and it passed with 56.7% percent approval and a 86.5% voter turnout.

United States - Hurricane Andrew
Hurricane Andrew formed on August 15 near Cape Verde. It began moving west towards Miami. It hit the Bahamas on August 22nd as a
Category 4 storm but quickly gained strength and moved towards Florida. The storm began hitting southern Florida on August 23rd,
causing massive amounts of damage as a Category 5 hurricane. Estimates of the damage that it caused ranged between $27 and $35
billion and it was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history at that point in time. The storm destroyed tens of thousands of homes and caused
between 20 and 65 deaths.

United States - NAFTA Signed


US President George H.W. Bush signs the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on December 17 News Events. It was also
signed by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari on the same day. The agreement, also
known as NAFTA, eliminated most trade restrictions and tariffs on trade between the three signatory nations. The agreement was signed
so close the end of George H.W. Bush’s term as his administration wanted to make sure the incoming Clinton administration would not be
able to make drastic changes to the deal they had worked to secure.

Somalia -- Civil War and Conflicts


US and UN intervention tries to end famine and civil war in Somalia with Operation Restore Hope.Somalia was involved in various conflicts
throughout the 1970s and 1980s leading to the outbreak of a civil war under dictator Muhammed Siad Barre. In 1991 Barre was overthrown
and fled the country.The United States had tried to bring food aid to the country starting in April of 1992 in "Operation Provide Comfort" but
the deliveries were impeded by the fighting. President George H.W. Bush authorized "Operation Restore Hope' which brought American
forces to Somalia to help with famine relief and strengthen the United Nations' United Task Force's efforts. Beginning on December 9, 1992
about 25,000 U.S. forces are sent to Mogadishu, Somalia as part of an effort to restore peace to the region. When President Bill Clinton
took office he reduced the number of troops in Somalia and by June of 1993 only about 1,200 forces remained.
Significant Events that occured in 1999 : World

USA - The United States Senate acquits President Bill Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice on February 12th, ending his five
week long impeachment trial. Details of the trial centered on the President’s inappropriate relationship with former White House intern
Monica Lewinsky. Clinton had lied to the American public when he initially denied the relationship. The final vote for the charge of perjury
was 55 for not guilty and 45 for guilty and it was 50 to 50 for the obstruction charge. The Senate required a two-thirds majority to convict
and remove Clinton from office. The trial was presided over by Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

Europe - The Euro is established as the new common currency of the European Union on January 1st. It was initially used as a virtual
currency in the financial markets and physical currency began circulating in 2002. The Euro replaced the currency of eleven European Union
nations at first and it expanded to others eventually. The original Euro countries included Austria, Finland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Italy,
France, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Portugal. Several EU countries also opted out of adopting the Euro like Sweden, the United
Kingdom, and Denmark. The idea of a common currency had been mandated in the 1992 Maastricht Treaty that created the European
Union.

East Timor - The citizens of East Timor voted in a referendum on their independence from Indonesia on August 30th. Indonesia had
annexed the country in 1976 and maintained it as a province. As pro-independence movements gained traction, the President of Indonesia
asked the United Nations to set up the referendum in which the East Timorese people were given the choice of remaining in Indonesia but
with more autonomy or gaining their independence. An overwhelming majority of 78.5% voted in favor of independence with a 98.6%
registered voter turnout. While some violence from pro-Indonesia militias erupted after the vote, the country carefully transitioned to
independence over the next three years, making it official in 2002.

Yugoslavia - The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands indicts Slobodan Miloševic
and four others on May 27 for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo
Russia - Boris Yeltsin resigns as President of Russia, replaced by Vladimir Putin
Afghanistan - Osama bin Laden sets his Al-Qaeda terrorist base in Afghanistan ( he is on the FBI's Most wanted List ) following
involvment in American embassey bombings in Africa.

United States --- Columbine High School massacre


Two boys 17 and 18 years old go on a rampage at Columbine High School on April 20th Killing 13. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold kept journals
documenting their plan for a major bombing to rival that of the Oklahoma City bombing. with details about the planned attack on
Columbine High School. They kept videos that documented the explosives, ammunition, and weapons they had obtained. The pair shot
videos of doing target practice in nearby foothills, as well as areas of the high school they planned to attack.

Significant Events that occured in 1999 : India

Australian Christian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons were burned to death by Bajrang Dal activists in Kendujhar district,
Odisha.The chief minister of Orissa, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, resigns after pressure within and outside his Congress Party over recent
mob attacks on Christians in the state. On 15 February Giridhar Gomango is named to succeed him.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee sacks the government of Bihar, which is run by an opposition party, and imposes federal rule.
Vajpayee makes a goodwill visit to Pakistan on the maiden trip of a cross-border bus service between Delhi and Lahore. At the end of
a ground-breaking visit to Pakistan by Prime Minister Vajpayee, the two countries agree to work harder on their Kashmir dispute and
announce steps to defuse tension and reduce risk of nuclear war.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) backs an opposition demand for a parliamentary inquiry into the sacking
of the naval chief. The cabinet rejects an AIADMK demand for the dismissal of Defense Minister George Fernandes and the
reinstatement of the navy chief. It says it is ready for a trial of strength in parliament. The AIADMK withdraws two of its
representatives from the Council of Ministers.
The AIADMK withdraws support from the ruling coalition. President K.R. Narayanan asks the government to seek a confidence vote
in parliamen. India's 13-month-old BJP-led Second Vajpayee government falls after losing a confidence motion by just one vote.
India's Supreme Court confirms death sentences for four of the 26 people convicted of conspiring to assassinate former prime
minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.India's Supreme Court turns down an appeal by four co-conspirators sentenced to die in the
assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Two crowded trains collide head-on at a railway station in eastern India, killing 286 people.
A bomb explodes in the Delhi-bound Puja Express from Jammu at Kandrori station, killing 13 and injuring 50.
Heavily armed hijackers take over an Indian Airlines Airbus carrying 189 people from Kathmandu (Nepal) to New Delhi. After a detour
to the United Arab Emirates, it lands at Kandahar, Afghanistan, on 25 December. On 28 December the hijackers make three
demands, including the release of 35 terrorists and a sum of $200 million. On 31 December the hijackers, who stabbed a man on the
plane to death, free their hostages after reaching agreement with India for the release of three terrorists in Kashmir.
