Introduction

Pump is defined as a device which transfers the input mechanical energy of motor or of an
engine into pressure energy or kinetic energy or both of a fluid. The earliest pumps were devices
for rising water, such as the Persian and Roman water wheels and more sophisticated
Archimedes screw. Pumps used to transport, or pressurize gases are called compressors, blowers
or fans. The important characteristics, of a pump are the required inlet pressure, the capacity
against given total head (energy per pound due to pressure, velocity or elevation), and the
percentage efficiency is much higher for mobile liquids such as water than for viscous fluids
such as molasses. Thomos Savery was an English inventor and engineer born at Shilstone, a
manor House near Modbury, Devon England. He invented the first commercially used steam
powered device a steam pump which is often referred to as “engine”, although it is not
technically an engine.
 Pump :

The hydraulic pump can also be utilized in processes that require high hydraulic pressure. It is
hydraulic device that lifts fluids from low to high levels, moves fluid from low to high-pressure
areas. The pump transfers fluid by converting the fluid's mechanical energy into pressure energy
(Hydraulic Energy). It can be observed with heavy equipment. A pump has similar working to a
compressor. The main difference between them is that they use different working fluids.

1. Types of Pump :

There are two main types of pump are given below :

1) Posture displacement pump
2) Rotodynamic pump.
1) Posture Displacement Pumps (Reciprocating Pump)

2) Rotodynamic Pumps (Centrifugal Pump) :

A centrifugal pump is a mechanical device designed to move a fluid by means of the transfer of
rotational energy from one or more driven rotors, called impellers. Fluid enters the rapidly
rotating impeller along its axis and is cast out by centrifugal force along its circumference
through the impeller's vane tips. The action of the impeller increased the fluid's velocity and
pressure and also direct it towards the pump outlet. The pump casing is specially designed to
constrict the fluid from the pump inlet, direct it into the impeller and then slow and control the
fluid before discharge.
 Types of Rotodynamic Pumps (Centrifugal Pump) :

a)Mechanically Actuated Pump :

This type of pump has a reciprocating mechanical linkage that is directly attached to the
diaphragm. The pump includes a gear set or other mechanical mechanism to convert the rotation
of the linkage that is attached to the diaphragm flow may be varied by varying the stroke length
or pump speed.
b) Hydraulically Actuated Pump :
This type of operation employs an intermediate hydraulic fluid located on the non-product side
of the diaphragm to flex the diaphragm. The hydraulic fluid is pressurized by a reciprocating
plunger. Though it act similar to a mechanically actuated diaphragm, the plunger isn’t attached to
the diaphragm, but rather pressurizes the intermediate hydraulic fluid, which flexes the
diaphragm. Flow is varies with this type of diaphragm pump by varying the amount of hydraulic
fluid that is bypassed .
c) Solenoid Pump :
These pumps have an electric motor that alternately energizes and de-energizes a solenoid,
creating an electro magnetic force. That reacts with a metal part on the diaphragm.
A pump that uses an electromagnet as the driving power. When energized, the electromagnet
attracts the solenoid plunger, generating a reciprocating motion moving the diaphragm to deliver
a pre-determined amount of fluid.

D) Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps

(AODD): This is type of double acting pump. They have two diaphragm and two sets of check
valves. The pump is driven by compressed air operating alternately on the non- product side of
one diaphragm, and then the other. The air is delivered to the alternate sides of the diaphragm by
means of a shuttle valve. Flow is varied by varying air pressure supplied to the pump
Posture Displacement Pumps (Reciprocating Pump)
Reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump. It consists of piston which reciprocated in
a cylinder by rotating crank. The reciprocating motion of piston creates alternately vacuum
pressure and positive pressure in the cylinder. The liquid is lifted up due to vacuum pressure into
the pump cylinder. The positive pressure by piston force the liquid from cylinder to flow through
delivery valve.
 Types of Posture Displacement Pumps (Reciprocating Pump) :

 Based on Cycle of Operation :

a) Single Acting Pump :

Single acting pumps discharge on either the forward or return stroke of the piston or plunger ;
every cycle of the pump displace only one volume of liquid.
b) Double Acting Pump :
In double acting pump, liquid is discharged on both the forward and return stroke of the piston.

 Based on Number of Cylinder :

a) Single Cylinder Pump :

A single acting cylinder in a reciprocating engine is a cylinder in which the working fluid act on
one side of the piston only. A single acting cylinder relies on the load, springs, other cylinders, or
the momentum of a fly wheel to push the piston back in the other direction.
b) Multi-Cylinder Pump :
Where more than one cylinder is being driven by one driver, the arrangement is named according
to the type and number of cylinders.
 Based on Pumping element :

a) Plunger Pump :
A piston pump is a positive displacement pump, in which the high-pressure seal rotates with
piston. These types of pumps are used to move liquids or compressed gases. The two piston
pumps are lift and force pumps operated by hands or by the engine.
b) Piston Pump :
A piston pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-pressure seal reciprocates
with the piston. Piston pumps can be used to move liquids or compress gases. They can operate
over a wide range of pressures.
c) Bucket Pump :
The bucket pump is mainly used in drilled wells. A hand operated force pump commonly used
for spraying with liquids contained in a bucket.

Water pumps are commonly used on construction sites to remove excess water accumulated due
to heavy rain or high water table. They primarily serve two purposes: keep water out of
foundations, tunnels, and other excavation pits ; and provide supply of water for jetting and
sluicing pumping, water for cofferdams, etc. The choice of water pumps for water construction
sites is dependent on the complexity of the project, the amount and rate at which the liquid is
removed, the type of liquid, the loss due to friction, the height of suction lift, and the size of the
pump.
 Selection and Choice of Pump :

i. Requirement
ii. Capacity of pump
iii. Fluid characteristics
iv. Importance of water supply
v. Material of construction
vi. Cost of pump
vii. Space available

 Generally reciprocating pumps are suitable where required capacity is expected

constant over wide range of system head variations.
 Centrifugal pumps are used in variable head, space available for installation also plays
an important role if less space is available centrifugal pumps are the best choice.
 Various fluid properties like velocity, density, also plays an important role in selection
of pump
 For example, reciprocating pump are submersible pumps are used in bore well.

 Pump Applications :

1) To pump water from to fields for agricultural and irrigation purposes.

2) In petroleum installations to pump soil.
3) In steam and diesel power plants to circulate feed water and cooling water respectively.
4) Hydraulic control systems.
5) Transfer of raw materials.
6) Pumping of water in building.
7) Fire fighting.
Conclusion

It was a wonderful learning experience for me while working on this project. This project
developed my thinking skills related to the topic. The project give me real insight into the topic
“Collect the information about different types of pumps for selection of type of pump”. This is a
great woner for me that our teacher helps us in all respect to finish such an Micro-Project i.e
“Collect the information about different types of pumps for selection of type of pump”. A special
thanks to my dear principal sir and teacher setting such a target for us. I enjoyed every beat of
work, I put into this project, I do hope that my project will be interesting may be even
knowledgeable.
Thank You.
