VARNISH

Varnish is a transparent, hard, protective finish or film

that is primarily used in wood finishing but also for other
materials. Varnish is traditionally a combination of a
drying oil, a resin, and a thinner or solvent. Varnish
finishes are usually glossy but may be designed to produce
satin or semi-gloss sheens by the addition of "flatting"
agents. Varnish has little or no color, is transparent, and
has no added pigment, as opposed to paints or wood
stains, which contain pigment and generally range from
opaque to translucent. Varnishes are also applied over
wood stains as a final step to achieve a film for gloss and
protection. Some products are marketed as a combined
stain and varnish.

Process of making Varnish

Types of Varnishes

1. Oil Varnish
2.  Spirit Varnish

Oil Varnish

A varnish consisting of a solution of natural or

synthetic resins in a drying oil (as linseed oil or tung
oil)

Preparation of Oil Varnish

Oil varnishes are prepared according to various methods. I
n some cases the resin is first melted, oil is added, and the
mixture is boiled down to the desired viscosity; in others t
he resin is added to the heated oil. A solvent and desiccant
are subsequently blended into the varnish base produced b
y these processes
Spirit Varnishes

A Spirit varnish is a dispersion of resin in spirit.

Preparation of Spirit Varnish

The resin and spirit are placed in a cylindrical drum.
plasticizer and other components are added. The resin is
dissolved by agitating the mixture or by rotating the drum.
It is then filtered and used. The final product is called
spirit varnish.

Uses of Varnishes

Varnish is primarily used as a wood finish where, stained

or not, the distinctive tones and grains in the wood are
intended to be visible. Varnish fishes are naturally glossy,
but satin/semi-gloss and flat sheens are available

Uses of Varnish in Painting

Varnish protects the painting from dirt and dust and even
out the painting’s final appearance, making it all equally
glossy or matt. Over the years, dirt and dust will stick to
the varnish, rather then the painting
