Portfolio: Beloved

Your final project will consist of three separate pieces that create a portfolio: reflection,
mini-multi genre project, and a student-teacher conference. You will be graded on each that will
count towards your total for your final project. This may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but you
will have multiple chances in class to work on it independently and collaboratively.

1. Reflection

The reflection part of your portfolio will be completed during class time. I have collected
all of your writing prompts from the beginning and end of class. You will be handed an
individual (or virtual) folder of all of your reflective writing to create a 1-2 page paper that
is double spaced. All of your analytical writing was done previously in class. Now, you
are responsible for writing one paragraph that is self-reflective about the entire book,
reading process, and class discussions.Below, you will find questions/prompt to guide
the content and structure of your paper.

Introductory paragraph
● What did you think this book was going to be about? What did you infer from the
title?
● What was your first impression of the book after reading the first few chapters?
How did it make you feel? Were you shocked, surprised,or angry?
● What was difficult about this book? Was it hard to understand or difficult to
follow?

Body Paragraphs
● What helped you understand Beloved? Did you pick up any good reading habits?
Reading habits can be anything that helps you comprehend the book like taking
notes, keeping track of characters, or even taking a break from the book to
process information.
● Describe your thoughts about our class discussion. Was it helpful to understand
the book? Did you learn more about your classmate’s mindset? Please give a
specific example of something you enjoyed, found problematic, or was useful to
you.
Concluding paragraph
● Explain how your overall impression of the book changed from beginning to end.
● What did you learn about yourself after reading this book?
● How will you apply your knowledge of this book and reading process in the
future?
2. Student-Teacher Conference

Teacher-student 10 minute conferences will be held during class time. At this time, you
will have the opportunity to work on your portfolio.During these conferences you I will
collaborate with you to brainstorm ideas for your portfolios. I will help you come up with a
plan for the completion of this assignment. We can create an outline and discuss
anything you’d like ranging from ideas to questions. Be prepared to discuss your
mini-multi genre choices. If you are unsure, that’s okay, bring what you have and we can
solidify your choice during our conference. Below is your conference meeting checklist.

3. Mini-multigenre

For this mini-multigenre project, it will require two different genres. You have the
opportunity to choose the genres you are most interested in within the two different
categories.

Visual Creative

Mind Map/Drawings Music (song, rap, etc.)
