Intro
Hey! Welcome to the unofficial help guide to Cthulhu: A Deck Building Game by Wyvern
Gaming. This guide was created to try to help you play the game better by explaining
some of the things you may be confused about.
Most of these answers were taken from the BoardGameGeek forum, from me asking
questions and from Wyvern’s own site. If there’s anything you spot that needs
correcting / adding / omitting / explaining then please don’t hesitate to email me at
madladdesigns@gmail.com.

Turn Order
Planning Phase
1. Fill the Miskatonic University (the row of Library cards you can purchase
from) back up to five cards.
2. Each investigator draws five cards from their personal Library Deck.
3. Preparation
a. Play any cards that allow you to draw other cards. Play cards that you
are going to use to purchase Library cards.
4. Research
a. Buy any cards from the Library that you wish. The empty spaces are
not filled until the end of the Planning Phase.
b. You CANNOT use Moxie from the cards you’ve just purchased to
purchase more cards.
5. Final Preparation
a. Any cards that you’ve kept behind or just purchased can be played
now, including healing & defence, ready for the Combat Phase.
Combat Phase
1. The Elder God
a. Any abilities the Elder God has are activated now.
2. Mythos
a. Mythos card(s) are drawn and acted upon. This may bring out Minions.
3. Minions
a. Any abilities that a Minion can use now is activated. If there are no
Minions out then this phase is skipped.
b. Minions activate in order of highest remaining health to lowest. If
there is a tie the investigator decides the order.
4. Investigator
a. The player now plays any cards that could damage or heal that they
have played in the Preparation Phase
5. Clean Up
a. Discard any unused cards still in your hand into your discard pile.
b. Discard any cards from the Miskatonic University that you wish (this is
a free action)
6. End of Combat
a. Any Minion effects that act at the end of combat will now activate.

Character Help
Boxer
The boxer says to double the effectiveness of Action cards; that means numbers,
beneficial and detrimental.
Doctor
The bladed library cards for the Doctor’s ability include: Katto, Dagger, and
Shank.
Librarian
When the Librarian borrows from the Miskatonic Library, do you only refill it to 4
after she goes to account for this?
That is correct. She returns the card to the library during clean up.
Professor
The Professors ability allows him to purchase things (from the Library) for 2 less
Moxie.
Time Traveller
His +1 effectiveness ability will be corrected to read, "Gains a +1 Moxie on all
starter cards." This was the intent.

Atlach-Nacha
Her ability only doubles the damage from tarantulas, not their health.
Uvash
The only way to defeat him is by healing him. Minion cards that heal the Elder
God in some way are the best way to go.

Crucifix
The Crucifix can kill ANY minion, including Beh’Moth the Devourer!
Dodge
The sources you can declare are Elder God, Mythos, or Minions. It negates any
Health or Sanity damage from that source.
Mend Trauma
The sources are Elder God, Mythos, or Minions.
Mystic Binding
Mystic Binding is played in the Final Preparation Phase and as soon as you
would have taken damage you lose your Mystically Bound Minion. It is the first
damage taken, not all in the combat phase. So as soon as that first spider
attacks you lose it.
Necronomicon
The Necronomicon is a very powerful card, it is a game ending card. There is only
one in the entire deck! For example another investigator could lose 15 Sanity for
you to gain 30 Moxie, kill the Elder God (if you can) and end the game!
There is an error of the cost of the card. The Necronomicon costs 8 Moxie, not 5
as stated on the card.
Also be aware that you CANNOT use the Necronomicon on yourself and is
therefore useless in a solo game
Preparation
The damaged is reduced from each source. So if there are 3 Minions the Health
/ Sanity is reduced by 1 from each Minion.
Reversal of Mythos
This affects ANY card deemed permanent.

Temporary Insanity
You regain the Sanity at the end of the NEXT combat round, so you will go
through 2 combat rounds before regaining Sanity.

Consume
It should read “If not already active spawn 1 Beh'moth the Devourer”.
End of Days
Another Elder God comes into play. You now face 1 more than you did!
Insanity
It would activate at the start of the Mythos card's turn in combat.
Loathing
It doesn’t matter what the Mix / Min values are, these are now swapped. The
easiest way to indicate this is to rotate the character sheet 180 degrees! This
effect is permanent.

Incorporeal Daemon
This effect is cumulative so for every Incorporeal Daemon minion out each turn
you would draw 1 less card (down to 1 card, you can’t go below 1 card drawn).
Star Spawn
As soon as 4 are active another Elder God is spawned. You now must destroy
both Elder Gods to win the game. If you drop them to 3 and then a 4th one
comes out again you spawn yet another Elder God, there is no limit to the
number of times this could happen.
Tarantula
You bring out 1 Tarantula for every Tarantula that is left at the end of the
Combat Phase, so if there were three Tarantulas left then another three would
be brought out making six in total! Tarantulas multiply very quickly if not dealt
with.
Thousand Young
Minions go after the Mythos in combat and a Minion's ability goes off during
their turn at combat. So another Mythos card would be drawn that round on the
summoned Thousand Young's turn.
Unholy Abomination
Always round up when doing half damage. If you attack the Abomination with 3
Moxie, he takes 2 Health damage and 2 Sanity damage is reflected back to the
Investigator.

FAQ
If a character ability or card I buy provides healing, can I heal other characters?
o The cards that provide healing can either allow healing for you or others, it
depends on the wording. Bandage for example simply says, "Heal 2 Health
Damage." You can apply to this to any Investigator. Psychiatric Care for
example says, "Gain 1 Moxie, Heal 3 Sanity to a targeted Investigator" this is
only applied to 1 Investigator of your choice, including yourself.
If I can affect damage is that only health damage or can it also be sanity damage?
What about loss? Does it affect loss?
o If an ability affects damage and does not specify Health or Sanity it can
affect either.
What's the difference between a bandage and a first aid kit? Both cost 3, and one
heals 2 health damage while one heals 1 investigator for 3 health. Does the
bandage only heal the person using it? Does the first aid kit heal anyone? Can either
be split between multiple people?
o First Kit must be applied to only one Investigator as it says so... Bandage
could potentially be applied to multiple Investigators. Although now... that
sounds backwards.
Can Moxie be accumulated and split up any way I like, allowing me to hit multiple
targets with, for example, a single haymaker?
o Yes, you can add up the total of your Moxie up and spread it among your
adversaries. However, you can't pool Moxie with other Investigators.
At the end of the round, the rules suggest discarding unwanted cards from the
Miskatonic Library, is this actually whatever cards the players don't want to obtain
in the future, leaving whatever is desired?
o That is correct; you would basically destroy them and then replace
them with new cards, for free.
