ANSWERS
Tanni Grey Thompson

The Magical Island

1. They loved the journey in the little vessel with single tall funnel, sailing down the Oslo-Fjord, the
most. He finds the surroundings immensely peaceful and beautiful, so much so that he finds it difficult
to describe the sensation he feels at that time.
2. Norwegian children learn to swim at a very young age because there are no sandy beaches on the
Fjord. The rocks go straight down to the water’s edge and the water is immediately deep, so children
have to learn swimming early so as to be able to swim in deep waters.
3. Their journey would end at the Island of Tjome. The primitiveness of the hotel has been brought out
by Roald Dahl when he describes the walls, ceilings and the floor of the bedrooms which are made of
unvarnished pine planks. Also, the toilets are in the wooden outhouse at the back of the hotel, with each
cubicle containing nothing more than a round hole cut in a piece of wood.
4. He calls the tiny secret island their regular destination because he would go there often to paddle and
play. They would stay there for three to four hours, messing about in the waters and in the rock pools
and getting sunburnt, without being disturbed.
No Alarm on the Flight Deck
1. a. The body language of the pilot tells us that he is getting ready to take a nap, as explained in the
above lines.
b. The speaker is concerned and worried at that time.
c. The speaker is wondering if the pilot is getting ready to take a nap now by using the table beside him
to put his cash, putting on his slipper and putting up his feet across the dash, loosening his tie and gently
sleeping off while the plane, in the automatic pilot mode, steers the plane to an altitude.
d. The speaker is worried/apprehensive.
2. a. The speaker is addressing the pilot.
b. The speaker’s concern is whether the plane is in the automatic pilot mode and the pilot is not paying
attention, or the pilot is awake and is in charge of the plane.
c. The speaker wants the pilot to be in complete charge of the plane, not to fall asleep because all the
passengers are depending on him to take them safely to their destination. The speaker wants the pilot to
keep his wits while steering and circling the plane, while taking it to higher altitude.
d. The speaker hopes to stay alive and travel back in six weeks’ time and experience the same emotion
of fear later, which is a sign of life and is anytime better than dying on this flight.
