Student Learning Objective(s) and Related Assessment(s):


Learning Target: Students will be able to understand the difference between biography
and memoir as well as identify how memoir acts as a meaningful form of storytelling for
both Asian Americans and humanity as a whole. This means they will be able to identify
memoirs versus biographies across all genres they encounter in the future.

Language Objective: Students will learn the vocabulary of memoir by highlighting this
week’s vocabulary words in their memoir submissions.

Standard(s):
Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements
of a story or drama (CCSS: RL.11-12.3)

Learning Activities:
Initiation: Independent Reading (30 Minutes)
 Students will Independently read (20 Minutes)
 Students will get a brief introduction to memoir through book talk. The
teacher will discuss the content of all the provided texts and allow students
to pass around and read from the memoir they receive if they choose to do
so. They are also invited to take home a memoir if they feel they want to
continue to read that as their independent book. (10 Minutes)
Lesson Development: Understanding Memoir Lesson and Activity
Understanding Memoir Lesson and Activity (40 Minutes Total)
 Teacher will deliver the Understanding Memoir Lesson and pass around
memoirs for students to browse. She will then give students their
instructions for the activity (20 Minutes)
 Students will individually work on creating a memoir scene using teacher
instruction (20 Minutes)
 The teacher will then ask students to share these memoir scenes in
partnerships using Kelly Burns’ revision activity. Students will be asked to
highlight the moments in their partner’s memoir where they feel the writer
should emphasize that point further because the writer “lit up” when it was
read aloud. (20 Minutes)
Closure: (5 Minutes)
The teacher will give a brief explanation of the importance of being able to read
memoir and the value memoir has to both Asian American culture and global
understandings of humanity in general
