TEAM WORK DESIGN PROJECT

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING THE PROJECT PROPOSAL

Please ensure you follow these instructions carefully

i) Title Page
This page should include the University Logo, the Faculty of Science & technology,
Department of Civil Engineering, Team Work Design Project, the Project Title, the Group
Members, their Registration numbers and Signatures.

ii) Chapter 1. Introduction

Should include the following: Background information and events to acquaint the reader with
the purpose for carrying out the work (e.g. production difficulties, redesign, design problems,
material selection, excessive deflections, etc.). General references to other work
(newspapers, journals etc) that help define the problem.
An accurate and concise statement of the problem providing details for the body of the
report. State the main objective and the specific objectives to be achieved and scope of
activities by which they can be achieved.

The specific objectives can be divided into three

1. To collect and analyze technical and socio economic data
2. To design the system components
3. To provide:
i) a cost estimate,
ii) an economic analysis,
iii) an operations and maintenance plan and
iv) a preliminary environment impact assessment

Provide a justification for the project and the scope and project location as the village or
community name(s), the nearest town and the distance and direction from the nearest town.
A map indicating the position of the project area in relation to nearby geographical features
should be included.

The introduction should "set the stage" for the work to be undertaken. It should go from the
general to the specific; that is, begin with a general description of the problem or technology
area and proceed to the particular issue that is being addressed. It is not a summary of the
work but rather the background and rationale for doing it. It should be 3-5 pages.

iii) Chapter 2. Literature Review

This section includes the background literature of the scientific and engineering techniques
that are related to the problem you intend to solve. It will include the basic theory which is to
be applied and the design. It should be 10-15 pages.
iv) Chapter 3. Methodology
This is the body of the report that should include:
 Physical laws and engineering principles applicable to the problem.
 Assumptions and simplifications made to facilitate a solution.
 Solution procedure.
 Sample computations and solution steps. (Details may be shown in the next chapter but
include enough detail in the body to explain the approach)

v) Chapter 4 Work Plan and Budget

A simple work plan and budget for your activities is required.

vi) References
The List of books, documents and papers referred in the report should be cited in
alphabetical order in the following manner.
a) For a Book
The Author(s) surname followed by the initials, the year in brackets, the title of book (italics),
the publisher’s name, the city and country of publication
For Example:
Mbiti, J.S., (1990) African Religions and Philosophy, Heinemann, London, UK

b) For a Public Body or Company Document The

Public Body or Company Name, the year in brackets, the title of book (italics), then the
publisher’s name, the city and country of publication
For Example

Uganda, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Kampala, Uganda
OR
African Development Bank (1997), Rules of Procedure for Procurement of Goods and Works,
African Development Bank, Abuja, Nigeria.

c) For a Journal Article

The Author(s) surname followed by the initials, the year in brackets, the title of the paper
(italics), the journal title, the volume no, the edition no and page nos.
For Example:
Tam C.M., (1999), Features of Power Industries in South Asia: A Study of Build- Operate-
Transfer Power Projects in China. International Journal of Project Management, Vol 13(5)
pp303-311.
