The American Revolution is the war that led to the creation of our nation, which took place from

1775 to 1783. Therefore, it is important to know what happened, and how America came to be.

The thirteen colonies have been established and they are trying to work with the king, King

George the third. The king of England is suffering greatly for money, and he wants to make it

known to the colonies that he is their ruler. Since the king used up many resources in the

previous war, the French and Indian War, he was set on having the colonies pay for it.

The Colonies are growing strong and needing less of the king and this is how he starts to lose

control. The king is countering by taxing everything, sugar, tea, and the stamp act were

established on the colonies.i The colonies fight back by stopping the imports and setting new

alliances and resources. Arguing back and forth and not getting anywhere made the king send

troops to Boston taking over the city. This didn’t sit well with the colonies at all, the colonies are

protesting “No Taxation without representation” and faced off with the British army. The Boston

Massacre happens and the news spreads like wildfire causing an uproar. Representatives of each

state gather in Philadelphia and decided it was time to make the king. listen The Continental

Congress was created; the colonies were getting ready to fight.

In 1774 The Continental Congress was created by delegates of 12 of the 13 colonies John

Adams, George Washington, many more totaling 56. Currently, the colonies are still trying to

work with the king and just trying to make him listen and change toward them. One of the tactics

the colonies used was boycotting the British and stopping trade with them. Becoming stronger

and more independent the colonies began to start thinking, what if they don’t need the king and

might be better off without him.ii

The first two battles were in Lexington and Concord at the same time and it was a victory for us

making the British retreat to Boston and eventually driven out completely. George Washington
was leading the army; he was appointed later to be the first president of the United States. On

July the second of 1776 the Declaration of Independence was drawled and sent to the king

making it official on July the 4th, the United States of America was born.

King George retaliated by sending troops to take over the colonies, the founding fathers came

together to find resources and allies to help them get back control. The battle of Yorktown in

September 1781 was where the British surrendered a month later.iii At this point, Parliament

which is the English government is realizing they are losing everything fighting this war. The

treaty of Paris in 1783 was passed having the English retreat, recognizing the colonies as free.

Ending the revolutionary war.

After the war is when the United States of America’s government was tested. George

Washington was named the first president. And the articles of confederation are seeming more

like a failure. In the years to come, they were replaced by the Constitution, and the Continental

Congress was replaced by the U.S congress. The Revolutionary war was the beginning of

America and introduced us to many more people that are now in our history books where we can

learn from them.
