Until one of the Hungry Dead, a lowly criminal in life,

More Hungry Dead followed her teachings, and so the Great
Dharmas were born.

It’s a tidy myth, with many variations. The Great

Dharmas are said to have originated in ancient China,
and from there they have spread to Asia as a whole,
blending or coexisting with local beliefs and lesser
dharmas.
CHAPTER ONE: THE HUNGRY DEAD 11

WHAT ARE THE GREAT

DHARMAS?
Among the Hungry Dead, there are four broadly
recognized “Great Dharmas,” and two other paths that
are sometimes numbered among them.

The Great Dharmas claim legendary origins, coming

from the teachings of the First Arhat herself. They have
ancient sutras, records of other enlightened arhats
throughout history, and long-lived societies to support
their claims. But arguably, all four dharmas have reached
their preeminent state primarily by tackling the most
fundamental problems of Hungry Dead existence:

 The Devil-Tigers concern themselves with the

purpose of the Thousand Hells, the unique
enlightenment that comes from suffering, and
with the true nature of the wickedness that
damned them. They often claim to be demon
princes in their own right, aiming to dismantle
and supplant the mechanisms of a corrupt and
failing hell.
 The Resplendent Cranes are concerned with
order, purity of the soul, and with the ability of
individuals and societies to bring themselves in
alignment with divine virtues. The world has
long lost the favor of heaven, they claim, but
that does not mean that it cannot be reclaimed.
 The Bone Flowers study death, and they tend
to the invisible world of ghosts and ancestor
spirits. They often try to repair instances of
what they see as a cosmically broken and unjust
cycle of life and death, and in doing so explore
the tension between life and death that is their
own state.
 The Thrashing Dragons study life in all its
forms, from humans and animals to the
invisible “little gods” of the spirit world. By
understanding and mastering the principle of
life, the Dragons aim to protect the living
cosmos from hell’s corruption, and so cultivate
the life within themselves.

There are also two popular but controversial dharmas,

both centered around humanity. They are celebrated,
tolerated, or seen as outright heresy, depending on the
region:
12 ANALECTS OF THE DAMNED

 The Rising Phoenixes see their current state as

an evolution of their previous mortal lives,
protecting their living families and maintaining
a connection to humans. They underwent
political persecution in China until recent
decades, but the Phoenixes enjoy a huge
presence in Japan and popularity in the Indian
subcontinent.
 The Thousand Whispers reject their personal
human identities and instead live "within"
humanity through multiple lives, ritualistically
dying and being reborn again and again to
obtain insight into existence itself. This
dharma’s adherents are rare, to the point where
some localities have no idea what to make of
them at all.
Many other, less recognized dharmas exist, often
centered around particular tribal or fringe beliefs. Some
of these lesser dharmas and cults will be described later.

DO THE HUNGRY DEAD LEAD

MONASTIC LIVES?
Generally, no. Former monks certainly number among
the Hungry Dead, and retreats of years or even decades
can be part of one’s journey to the Hundred Clouds. But
to be clear, quiet penitents the demon people are not.

It seems to be a common saying among the Hungry

Dead that no one leaves hell without a sense of purpose.
The Great Dharmas especially, it must be said, are not
philosophies of the navel-gazing variety-- they demand a
type of mysticism that functions best, for lack of a better
description, by being out in the world and making
trouble. Hence, it is not unusual to find a cell of Bone
Flowers who plan to jailbreak the dungeons of the ghost-
emperor Yu Huang, or a Resplendent Crane who plots
to change the flow of qi in her city to facilitate the
summoning of a divine oracle, all in the service of
enlightenment. A Devil-Tiger who directly experiences
the sins of organized crime is far more likely to do
something-- whether to snap the monster’s neck, or to
plot to take control from within-- than nothing at all.

In addition, the Hungry Dead are traditionally the

arteries of diplomacy in many places, negotiating contact
between shapeshifters, spirit courts, magicians, and other
vampires. To be clear, diplomacy is not friendship.

least, they have a long and established tradition of
talking with the wicked immortals.

WHAT POWERS DO THE HUNGRY DEAD HAVE AT

THEIR DISPOSAL?
The greatest powers of the Hungry Dead come from their miraculous bodies: Unless they are
killed, the Hungry Dead do not die. They can heal from any injury short of decapitation, and they
have access to incredible strength and speed. They can even shapeshift for brief, violent periods,
growing lethal claws and manifesting other demonic traits.

The Hungry Dead also have a myriad of learned skills. These are similar to martial or yogic
practices, and they are tied deeply to their quest for enlightenment. For example, being part-spirit,
many Hungry Dead learn to see the spirit worlds and enter them. Some have learned to manipulate
their bodies in subtle and graceful ways, changing appearance or becoming as light as a feather. Others
can force humans to obey even the most outlandish commands, while still others have developed a
physical “third eye,” which they open to receive visions of the past and future.

The demon people are not invincible, of course; fire, sunlight, or the claws and enchanted steel of
the enemy can leave them terminally wounded. Failing to maintain their stores of vitality can also
leave them vulnerable. But between the innate and learned abilities of the Hungry Dead, taking one
down is not a task for the foolhardy or unprepared.

FINALLY: A NOTE OF CAUTION

Based on what has been said, you may be forgiven for
imagining the Hungry Dead as perhaps situationally
dangerous, and obviously flawed in their appetites, but
concluding that they are fundamentally good beings with
noble intentions. But you would be very wrong. Depending
on how far you took this assumption, you would pay for
this mistake with your life and the lives of everyone close to
you.

This bears emphatic repeating: No, the demon people are

not mere blood-drinking monsters from a horror novel--
They also eat flesh, gladly sup on the final breath from a
child’s lungs, and they will torture and torment humans
without a single compunction, if it brings them closer to
whatever goals they have. Enlightenment is not the same as
kindness, and behind every Hungry Dead’s smile, no matter
how charming or sympathetic, is a river of blood that would
stagger the worst killer.

The Hungry Dead are real, they have seen hell, and they are
no longer human. Do not forget this.

WHAT ARE THE AUGUST COURTS

OF THE QUINCUNX?
A dream of power and a cautionary tale. For five hundred
years (longer, if one believes the courtly elders), the August
Courts of the Quincunx claimed dominion over all of
China and its Hungry Dead. For the first few centuries,
this was indisputable—the Quincunx was in the shadows of
several dynasties, with exclusive access to the levers of
imperial power and influence.

Under the Quincunx, the four Great Dharmas expanded

their various societies and suppressed the so-called “family
worship” and “heretical cults” (the Rising Phoenixes, as
well as lesser dharmas) that defined the prior world.
China’s enormous population of Hungry Dead was
transformed from a society largely ruled by the strong into
a refined and world-envied civilization of the night. With
all of its accomplishments, it was expected that the
Quincunx would survive for centuries more to come.

And it has. Technically.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE

QUINCUNX?
What happens to states all over the world? Resentment
simmered, until it exploded.

The Quincunx, by all accounts, had two missions: to

control and cultivate Hungry Dead society, and to cut off
the influence of the Yama Kings in China. While they
were successful for a time, their first mission meant that
the Quincunx eventually grew a long trail of casualties,
creating enemies of Yuan Hun who were only temporarily,
circumstantially powerless. And the second mission meant
that the Quincunx gained the attention of the Yama Kings,
who were more than happy to gift some power to anyone
who asked.

The so-called Century Rebellion began with the fall of the

Qing, as cults and secret societies rose up to assassinate
officials and claim territory from the Quincunx. Under the
backdrop of the World Wars and the fragmentation of the
Chinese state, the Hungry Dead of China experienced
their own civil war, fueled by ancient grudges and a large
dose of demonic power. The Quincunx, which had grown
used to a position of unquestioned supremacy, was now
fighting for its life.
Ironically, the event that finally broke the Quincunx’s back

The Uji are another institution of Hungry Dead society,

freshly risen Hungry Dead will often be surprised at the
graveyard by one of their great-grandparents, or by a distant
cousin who can trace their kinship through multiple
centuries. There are a number of different Uji throughout
Japan, each with the goal of serving their family’s interests—
Mortal family members, when they are aware at all, have
varying levels of understanding.

Some of the most long-lived and pedigreed Uji, able to

trace their lineage back to ancient Japan, are bound
together in a political entity called the Bishamon-shi. Their
main opposition is a rival alliance, made up of Uji with
more recent, ignominious, or foreign roots, who call
themselves the Genji-shi. (The irony of “Bishamon” being
the name of an imported foreign god is not lost on the
Genji.)

As stated earlier, Yorunoke who are either unclaimed, or

who reject being tied to their Uji, are usually expected to
be taken in by a temple of the Hourin.

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE

THERE FOR A NEW HUNGRY
DEAD?
Not many. In rural areas or places with a powerful spirit
court, one or more Yorunoke can be claimed as a god’s
personal steward. Serving a greater spirit and its children is
a lonely calling, which is often maligned and mocked
behind closed doors, but in public it’s respected as a “third
pillar” and a necessary function.

Unfortunately for traditionalists, there has also been a

growing trend for young Hungry Dead to reject the system
entirely and embark on paths that are seen as shameful.
CHAPTER THREE: YORUNOKE (JAPAN) 23

Historically, “Tsuchigumo” refers to the other native dead

of Japan. Outsiders would call them a bloodline in the style
of the Children of Caine, but this has only been
commonly understood within the past century. The
Tsuchigumo have long been disenfranchised and forced to
reside in the outskirts of major towns and cities, which is
why they are also referred to in polite conversation as soto-
no-mono, “the ones outside.” Even now, they are generally
distrusted by Yorunoke society as liars and parasites.

More recently, “Tsuchigumo” is also the title for those

Yorunoke who would be called Scorpion Eaters in China.
With no interest in seeking enlightenment, serving a god,
or serving the interests of a mortal family, these are Hungry
Dead who effectively stand outside society, and they are
treated accordingly. With no rights, not even the right to
existence, theirs is often a hard-scrabble, night-to-night
fight for survival.

The second type of Tsuchigumo, the political outsiders,

have been growing in number over recent decades. Most
notably, they have been found networking with members
of the Tsuchigumo bloodline, seeing a common cause in
resisting the status quo. These close relations have reached
the point where the “Tsuchigumo” are now becoming a
united political entity, with no difference between their
members. Together, with perhaps a nudge or two from the
banpaia, they might truly begin to shake things up for
Japan’s night world.

30 ANALECTS OF THE DAMNED

This brief document is the result of a few weeks of

discussion on RPGnet, in a thread titled “Rehabilitating
Kindred of the East.” Much of the country-centric writing
is the same as what was posted in the thread, while the
introductory section was largely from scratch or heavily
rewritten. Some of the more technical questions and
answers have also been omitted, for the sake of a smoother
and more cohesive reading experience. I am forever
grateful to the posters of RPGnet for encouraging the
creation of this document.

My hope in publishing Analects of the Damned is to give fans

of Kindred of the East a better starting point to share the
setting of the game with other people, who may otherwise
be (rightfully) turned off by the presentation of the original
corebook and companion. I’ve aimed to portray the
Hungry Dead with a greater sense of innate purpose, as
well as an identity that doesn’t rely on Vampire: the
Masquerade to exist. Ultimately, my wish is that I’ve made
the demon people and their world look as cool as I
personally see them, and that this gives people a basis to
begin exploring the published books with an open mind.

Future plans are not set in stone, but may include a

companion with more regions, the workings of the spirit
worlds, and/or an attempt to address some of the more
technical questions and answers. Regardless of what
happens from here, if I’ve managed through this document
to change one mind, or renew one person’s interest where
it once lay fallow, then I will see this as a success.

Thank you and happy gaming,

Hsienfan
