To promote diversity, Lia and I wondered if we are able to print Late Notices in a
different language. We thought that perhaps students are not turning in their books when they
receive Late Notice slips from the library because they are in English and students may not be
able to understand the language. We found out that the notices could be printed in a language
other than English, but can be only done in Spanish or French. This does not serve the
Cambodian students on campus.
To print a notice in a different language, you must first go into Destiny. On the left side,
click on “library reports” and then click on “Current Checkouts/Fines” under “Circulation.”
Once the page loads, you will see all of the reports that have been run. In our case, it has only
been in English for Lia. At the bottom is where we can build a new report. There are a series of
items that can be shown on the report, but to only show library fines, check the box for “Unpaid
Library Fines.” Under format, there is the option to change the language under “Notices.”
There are some problems with the Spanish library notice. When creating the notice, there
is an option to include a message. The message is written in English and says: “The following
items are due. Please return as soon as possible.” Therefore, if the librarian wants to ensure that
students understand the notice then the librarian must translate it herself.
I suggested that Lia prints the notice in English, but has the message in both English and
Spanish for students to read. That way, it could satisfy both Spanish-speaking students and
English-speaking students. However, there are students who also speak Khmer. Destiny does
not provide an easy solution to support students who are not English speakers.
