coMMENr: Relationship to other frogs is problematical. Included tentatively in the

Dubois, 1983, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 52:272, considered Allophryne to be a
member of the Bufonidae, following Laurent, 1979, Bull. Soc. Zool. France, 104:
406,b:ut neither presented any evidence to support this conjecture. Noble, L931,
Biol. Amph.:51"0, considered Allophryne to be a "toothless Centrolenellt". Savage,
L973,lnYial (ed.), Evol. Biol. Anurans:354, considered this species to form a
monotypic family, the Allophrynidae. Unfortunately the name Allophrynidae
does not meet the requirements of Article 13.a (statement of diagnosis or
reference to a diagnosis for new names proposed after 1930) of the 1985
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, and as such is not a valid
taxonomic name. Although Allophryne is here replaced in the Hylidae, this is
not because we think it belongs there. See Lynch, 1984, Herpetol. Rev., L5:46-
47, f.or a summary of the nomenclatural problem.
