1 Seal types
1.1 TB1 seal
Sulzer TB1 is a single seal especially designed for the AHLSTAR pump.
The sliding faces of the seal are balanced so that even large pressure fluctuations and pressure shocks do not unnecessarily burden the sliding
faces. In the Sulzer TB seal, the sliding ring lies on flexible material. Due to the flexible sliding ring, the sliding faces rotate without run-out,
automatically correcting any perpendicularity errors between the shaft and seal housing. The seal is suitable for pumps used in the water, heat
generation, paper, pulp, food and chemical industries, where clean and lubricating low-consistency liquids are pumped. The sliding faces of the
seal are lubricated and cooled by the pumped liquid.
1.2 TB1F seal
Sulzer TB1F is a single seal especially designed for the AHLSTAR pump.
The seal is suitable for hot water applications where the
TB1 seal cannot be used. In the TB1F seal, recirculation of the pumped liquid back to the seal space, or external flushing to prevent dry running
and for the cooling of the seal needs to be used. The throttled design together with continuous flushing ensures clean lubrication on the sliding
faces of the seal when the pump is running, and also during the starting of the pump.
1.3 TB2 seal
Sulzer TB2 is a double seal especially designed for the AHLSTAR pump.
The double-balanced design of the seal allows the use of both pressurized and non-pressurized sealing liquid. The sliding faces of the seal are
constructed and balanced so that the pressures of the pumped liquid and sealing liquid, which pressures cause forces, do not open the sliding
faces under any circumstances. Instead, the seal works in all pressure variation circumstances, also at negative pressure. In the Sulzer TB seal,
the sliding ring lies on flexible material. Due to the flexible sliding ring, the sliding faces rotate without run-out, automatically correcting any
perpendicularity errors between the shaft and seal housing. The seal is suitable for pumps used for environmentally hazardous and abrasive
liquids, where the operating limits of single seals are exceeded. The seal is suitable for difficult applications for pumps used in the paper, pulp, food
and chemical industries. The sliding faces of the seal are lubricated and cooled by the sealing liquid.
1.4 TB2P seal
Sulzer TB2P is a double seal especially designed for the AHLSTAR pump.
Sulzer TB2P seal is intended for use especially in closed circulation sealing liquid systems. The seal has a structure that pumps sealing liquid, so a
separate circulation pump for sealing liquid is not needed. The double-balanced design of the seal allows the use of both pressurized and non-
pressurized sealing liquid. The sliding faces of the seal are constructed and balanced so that the pressures of the pumped liquid and sealing liquid,
which pressures cause forces, do not open the sliding faces under any circumstances. Instead, the seal works in all pressure variation
circumstances, also at negative pressure. In the Sulzer TB seal, the slide ring lies on flexible material. Due to the flexible slide ring, the sliding
faces rotate without run-out, automatically correcting any perpendicularity errors between the shaft and seal housing. The seal is suitable for
pumps used for environmentally hazardous and abrasive liquids, where the operating limits of single seals are exceeded. The seal is suitable for
difficult applications for pumps used in the paper, pulp, food and chemical industries. The sliding faces of the seal are lubricated and cooled by the
sealing liquid.
2 Storage
Store Sulzer TB seals in a dry place in their original packaging, and do not open the packaging until installation. The seal packaging must be
handled with care, and the seals must not be dropped or knocked. If a seal has been stored, it must be checked for the jamming risk of the O-rings.
3 Safety
Sulzer TB seals must be used subject to the restrictions specified in the installation and operation instructions, and in accordance with the general
safety instructions. The operating condition limits given must not be exceeded.
W A R N I N G A burnt fluorinated rubber seal FKM and FFKM must be treated in the same manner as highly corrosive substances.
C A U T I O N The seal body package must not be lifted by holding by the thrust ring, because the heavier body may come off the thrust ring and
drop. Only lift the thrust ring package by the body part.
① Depending on the liquid 10ºC (18ºF) below the boiling point, ② With internal or external flushing
③ With sealing liquid
TB2 only: Adjust the sealing liquid flow from 0.5 to 3 l/min (0.13 to 0.79 USGPM). The recommended sealing liquid pressure is 0.5 to 1 bar (7.25 to
14.5 psi) above the pressure of the liquid to be sealed. If the temperature of the sealing liquid leaving the seal exceeds 60°C (140°F), increase the
sealing liquid flow.

Avoid touching the sliding faces. However, if you need to touch the sliding faces, clean them with a solvent cleaner and a soft cloth before pressing
the faces against each other. Press the sliding faces gently against each other. Remove sharp edges from all shoulders over which the auxiliary
seals (O-rings and gaskets) are pushed during installation. Lubricate the joint surfaces of the parts, and the auxiliary seals before installing them.
Use silicone oil or soap solution for lubrication. EPDM rubber is not resistant to mineral-based oil or fat. The seal parts go into place by pressing
manually. They must not be installed by hitting.

In order to preserve the best possible condition of Sulzer seals, we recommend that the seals be inspected always in connection with maintenance
work. Make sure that the seal is tight, and check the seal for any leaks before dismantling the device. The maintenance interval of the seals
depends on the process used, which is why the exact maintenance interval cannot be determined (1 - 10 years). In connection with device
maintenance, it is recommended to replace a seal that has been used for a length of time with a new seal whenever a seal needs to be removed
from the device (even if the seal is not leaking). If you want to re-install a removed seal, the condition of the sliding faces and auxiliary seals (O-
rings and gaskets) of the seal must be inspected, the seal space and seal of the device must be cleaned thoroughly, and the O-ring surfaces must
be lubricated with silicone grease.
In maintenance and reconditioning cases, we recommend that you contact the seal manufacturer or the seal manufacturer’s representative.
N O T E Before contacting the seal manufacturer or the seal manufacturer’s representative, verify the seal type and identification data from the
seal or in the installation and operation instructions to be kept close to the device.
7 Decommissioning
Sulzer seals are designed so that their maintenance would be as easy as possible by replacing worn or damaged parts with new, original Sulzer
spare parts. Parts can also be re-used after reconditioning them at Sulzer Customer Service Centers. Sulzer Customer Service Centers must be used
in the assessment of re-use and reconditioning. If you need additional instructions or guidance, please contact our representative. The materials used
in Sulzer seals are disclosed in the parts list supplied with the product.
At the end of the life cycle of a product or its parts, the appropriate materials and parts must be recycled or disposed of using methods which are
acceptable in terms of environmental protection and which conform to local legislation and regulations. If a product or its part contains
environmentally harmful substances, they must be removed and disposed of by following valid regulations. Packaging materials must be recycled
or disposed of using methods which are acceptable in terms of environmental protection and which conform to local legislation and regulations.
W A R N I N G Make sure that hazardous substances are disposed of safely and that the personnel use appropriate personal protective
equipment. Safety considerations must always meet the requirements of valid regulations.
Sulzer Mechanical Seals are considered as machinery elements, which do not fall within the scope of the potentially Explosive Atmospheres
(ATEX) Directive 2014/34/EU. It is the user’s responsibility to carry out an assessment of the entity, in which the mechanical seal is a part in
accordance with the Directive and Reference Standards to determine the suitability of the entity for the ATEX environment.
