Activity 5. Now that you've understood Hickel's concept of de-development. You require to explain the
following ideas of the essential knowledge part of this unit.

1. What is the primary objective or purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?

-The primary objective of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations is to
complete and eradicate poverty by 2030. Poverty causes hunger and malnutrition, restricted access to
education and other basic services, social prejudice and marginalization, and a lack of involvement in
decision-making are examples of its expressions. Living circumstances have a significant impact on both
physical and mental health. Improper or unpleasant housing can also spread diseases, increasing
healthcare costs, hindering individuals from working, and risking the well-being of the community. More
or less 736 million people lived on less than $1.90 per day in 2015, with many without food, decent
drinking water, and sanitation. Rapid economic growth has lifted millions of people out of poverty in
nations like China and India, but progress has been unequal. Women are more likely than males to be
impoverished because they labor for less money, have less education, and own less property. Not just
eradicating poverty is their only mission, but to provide also good quality education, gender equality,
clean water, and sanitation, pure and affordable energy, work and economic growth, innovation and
infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible production and
consumption.

2. What is the standardized unit that measures resource use and waste?
-The standardized unit for measuring resource consumption and waste is the 1.8 global hectare.

3. What is the standard response to eradicate poverty?

-Among the main goals for poverty eradication are improving access to sustainable livelihoods,
Providing chances for entrepreneurship and productive resources; ensuring universal access to key social
services; and...... In the battle against poverty, international collaboration is becoming more important.
Poverty reduction, often known as poverty relief or alleviation, is a set of economic and humanitarian
activities aimed at pulling people out of poverty permanently.

4. What is the threshold of the Earth for adequately sustaining life?

-The Earth has to be 1.9 hectares in size to maintain life. With a per capita GDP of roughly
$6,000 and a population of around 1.9 million, hectares in use, Cuba has one of the lowest literacy rates in
the world.

5. According to the majority of middle-and high-income countries, what puts the planet and society at
risk?

-According to current consumer research, 70% of individuals in medium and high-income nations
feel that excessive consumption endangers the environment and society. A comparable majority believes
that buying and owning less should be a goal, and that doing so would not compromise our pleasure.
6. How many hectares should each of us consume annually based on the resources available on the
planet?

-Our earth now only has enough resources for each of us to use 1.8 "global hectares" each year —
a standardized unit for measuring resource usage and waste. This is the average quantity of food
consumed by a person in Ghana or Guatemala.

7. In this article, what are the two items about the quality of life?

-The two indicators of quality life is life expectancy (having a long life) and happiness.
Many people believe that money, wealth, fame, and power are the source of having good quality life but
as time goes by they realized that having a long life and happiness was the real source of good quality
life.

10.What crisis on the planet would force us to slow down if we do not do so voluntarily?

-We shall be forced to slow down and eventually become extinct if we do not take voluntary
action to address the planet's climate change calamity. Global warming is to blame for the melting of the
polar ice caps. Sea levels will rise as a result, inundating low-lying islands. If no backup plan is in place,
the residents of these low-lying islands may perish. As temperatures rise, heat strokes will become more
common, killing those who are susceptible to dehydration. Aside from that, it would lead to an increase in
droughts. If there was no land that could be cultivated, farmers would be unable to feed us. If we didn't
have food and nutrients, we'd die.

11.According to Dr. Jason Hickel, what must be done instead of urging developing countries to 'catch up"
with rich ones?

-What should be done instead of pressuring impoverished nations to "catch up" with affluent
countries, according to Hickel? We should consider how to help developed nations "catch up" to more
suitable levels of development.

12.How would the different areas of the world react to the idea of de?development?

-The notion of de-development, according to a new consumer poll, will prove to be a potent
rallying cry in the global south.. According to a recent consumer poll, 70% of medium and high income
nations feel that excessive consumption is endangering the world and society. A comparable majority
thinks we should try to acquire and possess less, and that doing so will not make us unhappy.
