1.Explain the concept of science education in the Philippines.
The educational system in the Philippines consists of two programs, the Basic
Education and the Tertiary Education. The Basic Education is composed of three levels;
Primary Level (K-6), Lower Secondary Level (7-10) and Upper Secondary Level (11-
12). The Tertiary Education refers to all formal post-secondary education, including
public and private universities, colleges, technical training institutes, and vocational
schools.
The first 10 years of education in the Philippines for Science Curriculum
envisions the development of scientifically, technologically, and environmentally literate
and productive members of society. They must possess effective communication and
interpersonal and life-long learning skills as well as scientific values and attitudes.
Science Curriculum in Tertiary education on the other hand deals with developing
students’ understanding and appreciation of science ideas and scientific works, also it is
instrumental in fostering growth, reducing poverty, and boosting shared prosperity.
At this point in time of modern technology, the Philippines despite being labeled
as a “Third-World Country”, is trying its best to keep up, to improve its state of science
education. Despite our lack of modern facilities to cater and support such, the people of
the Philippines continue to show excellence in the field of science, that’s why other
countries tend to fund and hire scientists from the Philippines because they know our
capabilities and if given the right opportunity we can excel in the field of science.
We continuously develop programs to upgrade or to improve the study of science
in our country because it plays a very significant role in our daily lives, educating people
about science helps them develop and learn important concepts and facts that are
related to their daily lives, developing important skills such as the process skills, critical
thinking skills, and life skills which every Filipino use to cope up to everyday life
activities.
Therefore, in conclusion, the efforts of our educational department to impose the
highest quality of education especially in science and technology is being met and
because of that the future is bright for the next generation of scientists that can make
the Philippines great again.
2. How indigenous knowledge advances modern science and technology?
The definition of Indigenous People, they are distinct social and cultural groups
that share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural resources where they live,
occupy or from which they have been displaced. These indigenous people are also
referred to as First peoples, First nations, Aboriginal peoples, Native peoples,
Indigenous natives, endemic populations or Autochthonous peoples.
So, to answer the question on “How indigenous knowledge advances modern
science and technology?” I could say that for me, based on my observation, indigenous
people, people who live in a far secluded areas that people from a much modern are
hard to reach, the indigenous people are very creative, adaptive to situations due to
their way of living. Indigenous people mostly live up on the mountains, things around
them are their own technology.
Indigenous people have been proven to contribute to the sustainability and
productivity of many ecosystems, by the practices of these people, we come up with
different ways to improve them, their ideas are being upgraded by modern technology,
without that knowledge it will be difficult for us to adapt to certain situations especially
when it comes to unfamiliar surroundings.
Therefore, with the personal experiences of indigenous people, combined with
the knowledge being passed down by their ancestors with regards to the environment
and ecological relationships surrounding them, these modern science and technology
advancements were being developed which if adapted by other people in the society, it
will definitely make their living easier and great.
