Introduction -

What is it (Global issue and extract)

Rhea -
Good morning, my name is Rhea. The global issue I have chosen to talk about is communal violence and Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The extract I’ll be looking at is from ACT 1 Scene 1 from ‘Blood Wedding’
by Federico Garcia Lorca. The play opens with the bridegroom and his mother engaging in a conversation as the
bridegroom leaves for work to the vineyard. Here, we see the bridegroom’s mother, overreacting at the mere
mention of a ‘knife’ that the bridegroom requires for cutting his grapes.

Ishita -
Good morning, My name is Ishita. The global issue that I am going to talk about is the conflict between love and
reason. The extract that I will be using to explore this issue is from Act 2 Scene 1 of ‘Blood Wedding’ by Fredrico
Garcia Lorca. The extract that i have chosen depicts a heated conversation that takes place between the Bride and
Leonardo just as she gets ready for her wedding.

Aryan - Good morning, my name is Aryan. The global issue I have selected is the difference in expectations
among generations, which makes the nature of marriage transactional. While this is a global issue relevant
throughout the play, the passage I will be using to explore this issue is in Act 2 Scene 2 of ‘Blood Wedding’ by
Federico Garcia Lorca. In this extract, the mother and the father engage in a discussion about the importance of
children- especially sons- from a marriage.

Why is this global issue important to you?

Rhea - Having grown up in a conventional Indian society, communal violence has been one of the most defining
features of post-independence Indian politics. Be it the 1984 anti-sikh riots in the country’s capital Delhi, or the
anti-muslim progroms in the indian state of Gujarat, 2002;

Aryan - Materialism and the transactional nature of marriage are important to me because of its relevance in
Indian society. While conditions are improving as more people get educated, dowries are prevalent in India’s
rural areas because of the belief that sons are better than daughters. As I move on to adulthood, I seek to
challenge this stereotype and prevent my marriage from becoming a ‘transaction.’
