Introduction

Nowadays, social activities are necessary and helpful for everyone,

especially for students. Universities also consider it’s mandatory activity before

students' graduation. As in our Bach Khoa university, students must have full of

fifteen days of social activities to graduate. Most of students feels very excited

and actively takes part in them but others who consider it is a requirement and

only do it as obligation to fulfill if they want to graduate on time.

Three theory concepts

In this research, we apply three theory concept consists of personal

values, perception and attitude.

[1]
Following Stephen P.Robbins , “perception is a process by which

individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give

meaning to their environment”. [2]

Nonetheless, what we perceive can be

substantially different from objective reality. Different individuals are every

person also have different thinking style, the belief, and feelings, objectives and

almost every individual behaves accordingly. Because of these various factors,

people take different meaning for the same things. [3] So why is perception plays

an important role in study of Organizational behavior? [4]

Simply because

people behavior is based on their perception of what reality is, not on reality
itself. [5]
perceptual process including observations, perceptual selection,

perceptual organization, interpretation and response.

[6]
According to Dr Lan Anh, “personal value is beliefs, a motivational

construct, abstract goals, ordered by importance relative to one another”.

Value system including two types are terminal and instrumental value, terminal

is goals which an individual want to gain in their life and instrumental value is

ways they act to achieve terminal value. It is the factor affect affective which is

a part of attitudes.

Following Perloff, “Attitude is a learning, global evaluation of an object

(person, place or issue) that influence thought and action”. [7] Attitude including

three components, these are cognitive, attractive and behavioral.

Method is used to research

Our team conducted a survey about opinion of Back Khoa students about

this requirement of university basing on theory concept and method we used is

interview with some students to survey and understand more clearly about their

thoughts on this requirement. After we gather information through their

answers, these are the analysis through the interview with people who we

invited to interview and the main question that we asked them is “What do they

think and feel about the days of social activities at school, especially 15 days

required?”
Giang and Quynh Interview analysis

Firstly, we mention about their perception of this issue, there is a general

opinion, Giang and Quynh have the same thinking that social activities are quite

good and meaningful. But besides, they also give their own opinion. Giang

thinks that she's student of international program so she just takes part in the

activities which she feels it's meaningful. It means that if she sees that activity is

interesting and helpful for herself, she will join. She will not participate in some

boring activities because maybe they waste her time, especially for her program,

it’s optional and also unnecessary. In Quynh’s side, at first, she thought that the

social activities just help her to have 15 required days so that for the remaining

2 years, she could focus on studying without having to join in any activities

anymore and this problem leads to her attitude. It shows that, Quynh only

considered social activities were requirement of school because she had to have

15 days in the first 2 years. Therefore, she participated in many social activities

just to have them, not for her happiness or experience. It is like an obligation

that she has to fulfill to focus on her studying. But after took part in lots of

activities, she had a changing in her mind and attitude, she realized that

activities are also helpful and interesting. After that time, she participated in

social activities with more happiness and excitement.

Secondly, at first, they may not have much feeling when participating in

social activities, they just participate as a necessity. But after participating in

interesting and meaningful activities, such as the exam season relay project,

Quynh feels happy, because she can make new friends not only in our english

program but also vietnamese program's friends. As Quynh feels that they're so

kind and friendly. That shows the social activities are very useful, when

participating in meaningful and humane activities such as blood donation, green

summer volunteer campaign, students have the opportunity to change their

mind, attitude and emotions in a more positive, happy and exciting way. They

realize their contributions are good to society and from there, they will actively

participate in more meaningful activities.

Quan Interview analysis

In Quan’s interview, we explored another aspect from his sight, how his

attitude expressed outside and did organizational culture fit with his value or

not.

Attitude including three components: Cognitive, affects and behavior, so

how it expresses outside toward attitude? First of all, his sight about fifteen days

of social activities basing on his perception, the way he thinks about a situation,

social activities. From his point of view, it also has good and bad aspects, it will

waste time and not happy when he does some activities such as carrying

equipment for presentation contest, and it will make him be very happy when

doing work such as donate blood. His perception affects cognitive, fifteen days

of social activities requirements of Bach Khoa university also has benefit and

drawback aspects, if doing significance works, these activities will inspire him,
motivate him doing good things for life, for people surrounding. Quan joined in

many activities and he willing to donate blood to help other people. Aspect he

saw in this activity is he will help others people and what he can contribute to

social, making life better. Moreover, personal value is the factor which affects

his feeling, lifelong learning and graduating from university are his goals and to

achieving it, he must try his best to study, earn knowledge and experiences and

gaining accomplishment which belongs to terminal value, so he feels

comfortable and interest in meaningful work, and having positive emotion with

this, he unwilling work activities no significance just because of achieving days

of social activities to graduate and it makes he feel not good about this. In

behavior: he just registers activities he really wants to do, not only gather days

of social activities but he also can build more relationship, contribute things he

could to social. And his attitude: he not really satisfies with fifteen days of

social activities requirement, participating in activity work is the right of

students, does he volunteer or not, and school cannot force him by cooking up

rule students must take part in social activities and achieving enough day to

graduate.

Mai Interview analysis

According to Mai’s opinions, we can consider some respects about the

social activities that bring for her.

Firstly, participating in school activities, she has a purpose of earning

days of social work to satisfy the school’s requirement. Therefore, she was not
excited about social activities and her attitude about this issue will not

enthusiastic and and self-motivated. It will result in negative spirit in working.

She doesn’t consider any other factors or implications, she just assume that just

meeting the requirment is enough. However, after she joined in Green Summer,

her perception changed. She feels well-being and interested in volunteer

activities: Spring volunteer, voluntary blood donation,… because through that

works she can help others, save the peole, bring happy for the poor and through

which she sympathized and shared more with everyone.

Secondly, she realizes the values of social activities is much higher, it’ll

broaden her mind. When participating in social work, she feel herself more

confident about communication, open-hearted and easy adjusted to new

environment. Without stopping to really consider your personal core values

before taking part in activities, she unintentionally tooks a big step backward in

terms of personal development. When she’s aware of her core values, the road

to personal development will be much easier because she will innately know

what social works will improve her knowledge and experience.

Finally, she becomes actively participate in social activities more.

Moreover she also signs up to work in the school’s youth union and so now, she

is having more 45 days social work than the school requires.

Dat point of view as a class president

As he is a class monitor, his perception about 15 days of social activities

has advantages and drawbacks effects:

• First of all, they feel uncomfortable when they participating just for the

full days of social activities. Lead to the result, they feel reluctant and be

obliged when they join in that activities without enthusiastic spirit in working.

• However, many social activities for students such as Green Summer,

Volunteer Spring, relay exam season, blood donation ... This is also an

opportunity for students who are shy, less active or have not yet adapted to a

proactive university environment with the opportunity to rub reality, arouse

consciousness for the community. Consequently, they can learn and gain more

experience through that activities.

Besides, the way your view of social activities make sense or not is the

most important.

Group point of view

From these interviews, fifteen days of social activities is necessary and

compulsory for the students in our school. Of course, some of us will feel happy

and be excited to join while the others consider it obligatory, feel quite

uncomfortable and even lazy to participate.

We believe that joining in activity work is the right of students, does they

volunteer or not, can’t force them. Moreover, fifteen days of social work is also

a pressure and difficult thing for students who cannot do graduation thesis.

However, sometimes it is also inspirit, motivate us work meaningful and

contribute to community, we will become more confidence and earn

experiences. Social activities brings out attributes within us that we never

realized existed, challenging us to become more patient and caring, and

encouraging us to strive towards being a better person. This will become a

“baggage” for us in the furture.

Conclusion

Basing on their perceptual, the way they see a problem, social activities,

others think it is good, it is very convenient for them, it makes them happy

when joining however, another think it is very waste time, waste money and

they don’t want do it. Some meaningful activities that you can participate in

such as relaying exam season, volunteer spring, green summer and other

volunteer activities such as blood donation, helping underprivileged people,

visiting orphanages look and nursing home. Good or bad is due to each person's

thoughts and activities that they participate in. Take part in a social work day

with the right attitude will bring many benefits for yourself and society, besides

there will also be some disadvantages. Social work activities bring many

benefits for students such as improving communication ability and meeting

many people and creating relationships. There will be some disadvantages such

as wasting time and effort for some meaningful activities and lack of time for

studying. In order to the social work day to become more meaningful, students

can choose to participate in volunteer activities and arrange activities in

accordance with ability and schedule.
