CHAPTER- IV

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP AND METHODOLOGY

The details of experimental setup preparation and the methodology followed are
elaborated in following sub sections.
4.1 Parameters
For carrying out the experimentation by using solar still, the parameters considered are
1. Fresnel lens
2. Normal water
3. Sea water
4. Wind velocity

4.2 Experimental Methodology

The experimentation performed for 14 days and out of which, for 7 days normal water was
used and for another 7 days sea water was placed in the storage basin. Also for determining
the effect of Fresnel lens, experimentation was carried out with and without usage of Fresnel
lens. Series of experiments were conducted at location Visakhapatnam (17.74°N,83.26°E) in
the month of April and May from 10: 00A.M to 04:00 P.M,

Initially normal water was poured into the storage basin of depth (30mm). Experimentation
was conducted without using the fresnel lens and recorded the corresponding readings i.e.,
basin temperature, wind speed, pvc sheet temperature for every one hour repeatedly and
measured the total amount of water collected in the measuring jar. The experiment was
conducted for at least 3 days.

Experimentation was repeated with fresnel lens and recorded the corresponding readings i.e.,
basin temperature, wind temperature for every one hour and measured the amount of distillate
collected in the measuring jar. This experimentation was conducted for 4 days. Both the
experiments using normal water was conducted under successive days.

Second set of experiment was conducted to study the effect of sea water under solar still. Sea
water was replaced by normal water placed in the storage basin of depth (30mm).
Experimentation was conducted without using the fresnel lens and recorded the corresponding
readings of basin temperature, pvc sheet temperature, wind speed for every one hour and
measured the total amount of distillate collected in the measuring jar. The experiment is
conducted for 3 days continuously.

The same experiment was carried out with fresnel lens and recorded the corresponding
temperatures and wind speed for every one hour and measured the amount of distillate
collected in the measuring jar at the end of the day. The experiment is conducted for 4 days
continuously.
