CLINICAL ROTATION PLAN

INTRODUCTION
Organization of clinical experience in the curriculum done on the basis of the syllabus and regulations lay
down by the statutory bodies like Indian Nursing Council and universities. Clinical rotation plan is a
period in which a medical student in the clinical part of his/her education passess through ‘working’
services in 1-4 months blocks.

DEFINITION
“Clinical rotation plan is the statement, which explains the order of the clinical posting of various groups
of nursing students belonging to different classes in relevant clinical areas and community health settings
as per the requirements laid down by the statutory bodies”

OBJECTIVES OF CLINICAL ROTATION PLAN


1. It will help student to gain maximum experience from clinical area and community settings.
2. It will contribute towards the attainment of overall objectives of nursing educational programme.

PRINCIPLES OF CLINICAL ROTATION PLAN


1. It must be developed in accordance with the master plan of the curriculum.
2. It must be made in advance with co-operation of all the faculty members involved in the clinical
teaching.
3. Maxims of teaching should be followed while selected areas of experience
4. Principle of continuity, sequence and integration should be followed.
5. Enough teaching staff should be make available in the clinical areas for giving proper instructions
to the students
6. Seeking suggestion of nursing staff working in clinical areas will ensure their cooperation
7. All assignments related to clinical area should be finished before the completion of postings.
8. Overcrowdings in the clinical areas with different groups of students is not advisable.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN PLANING


1. Standards, policies, philosophies and objectives of the organization
2. Curriculum outline
3. INC guidelines
4. Teacher-Student Ratio
5. Permission from authority and payment of fees
6. Clinical instructions and experts in the field of availability
7. Number of staff nurses employed to provide nursing services in the hospital.
8. Duration of clinical experiences
9. Size of ward
10. Select ward depending on the length of learning experience to be provided.

ROLE OF TEACHER
1. Along with theory and practice provide the chances and opportunities for the student to
develop personality also.
2. Provide experiences continuously, no students should be left alone.
3. Division of students into groups, should be based on supervisory principle depended on
i) Alphabetical order
ii) Registered number of students
iii) Observations of students
iv) Number of clinical areas to be completed
4. All the procedures have to be observed for each student.
5. Assigning client depends upon
i) Students level of knowledge and experience
ii) Faculty member
iii) Geographical Area
iv) Need of patient’s functional wise

CONCLUSION
Rotation planning is one phase of curriculum construction and implementation which merits more
attention and respect than it sometimes receives.
