Are We Losing The Habit Of Reading?

Popular education is creating a majority of people who can read, but what do people read
today? To answer this, we must consider a key factor which is changing our reading habits:
the development of new technologies is introducing significant changes in the kind of
material we read today and how we read it.  Every day, we all read a lot –journal articles,
social media posts, e-mails. But most of us prefer to read it online. Are we losing the habit
of reading?

In the first place, the habit of reading traditional literature is changing because of the
increasingly fast pace of life and the proliferation of electronic books. The pleasure of
reading a novel in bed at night, for instance, is being replaced by a growing trend to read e-
books on screen.  Of  course,  many  people  still  prefer  printed  books,  but e-books have
some advantages which make them so popular: you can download many books for free
and find a lot of information connected to the material you are reading.

Secondly, smart phones and the Internet are also changing the way we get the news. Many
people prefer online editions instead of printed newspapers. This trend is especially
evident in young readers. While young people do not usually consume printed newspapers,
they read online papers quite often. And although adult people still have the habit to read
printed newspapers, they also surf the net to get their news from different websites.
In summary, people today do not read less than in the past. They do read, but in a different
way and they consume other kinds of literature. Triggered mostly by the development of
new technologies, the current trend is to read a wide range of material from different
sources but mostly online.
