Mental Health Should Be Talked More In Schools

Schools need to talk more about mental health & mental illness. Many students deal with mental

health issues and many don’t even realize what they are possibly dealing with. Students at any age are

able to deal with mental illness, it could be a huge reason why many kids don’t do their assignments or

simply don’t have the right motivation to go to school.

Many students deal with mental illness. A lot of students struggle with mental health which can

cause their grades to drop or them having a simple test be difficult. Many students do self harm or ends up

leading to suicide because of the stress that school has cause students. More than 56% have said that

thenstress school is given leads them to self harm to relieve the pressure they are given. About 80% of

them go without treatment and over 50% of students 14 and older drop out of school and not graduate

(ACMH Pg.10). Seeing these percentages, what could school and staff do differently to help the

percentage decrease.

Ways schools can help is by having teachers take mental health training. Having teachers do this

we are allowing teachers to find the right way to talk to students when dealing with mental illness or

guiding them to the help needed. Not only educating the teachers we can help parents and students learn

more about mental health. Promoting mental health within school will help students be more open about

their situations, no one is going to be open about their emotions if no one is willing to talk about it or they

are bringing a negative thought to things. We have told students and kids that it’s alright to feel the way

they feel, that mental health is just as important as physical health. Normalizing that mental illness is

something anyone at any age could go through.

Another way that the school could do is create a safe environment in school. Making school more

fun to go to. Kids are not going to want to go to an environment they don’t feel like is positive. Students

aren’t going to enjoy school if everything is just plain boring and stressful. Students are going to act out in

a negative environment. Having school be in a more positive place where they are able to express

themselves and feel safe is a huge step. Ways we can help is regonzing the problems first and what we can

do to change the issue. We need to focus on the students and their behavior. Remembering that bullying is

still happening, we need to focus on how students treat others and how they are. We need kids to feel

more engaged in school, like studying hard for tests, having teachers have one on one time so students are

able to learn. Given extra help from teachers or other students. Another way is by itself a room dedicated

for students to go in there and be able to feel relaxed and calm. A guidance counselor could be there in the

room to have the student someone to talk to. Having a room just for students to go in there and take a

small break from their stress could help students feel more comfortable and easy at school.

Benefits of schools talking about mental health, teachers taking lessons on mental health is that

students are able to become the best of their ability. Every student is different, yes but that doesn’t mean

they can’t change. Mental health is a huge part of everyone 's lives. It’s a huge reason why many students

have dropped out or are failing. Schools need to pay attention to mental illness because encouraging it

will help students seek help and find the help they need without being afraid or simply not knowing what

to do. Students are going to want to do so much more if they are feeling valid and heard. Letting students

know that seeking help isn’t bad but a good thing. We shouldn’t let students struggle by themselves but

help them when they need it.
