İsim Ne Sö yler: Nitel Bir Araştırma

The article was prepared by Yağmur Saklı Demirbaş and Faruk Gençöz. The question of the
research is "Does the name play a role in the shaping of life, what are its effects?" The reason
for the research was to interpret how names affect our lives.
Participants in the study were selected from Middle East Technical University students. 6
people who knew the stories of their names were chosen. Data were analyzed with the
Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis method. IPA is the method used to understand what
the participant is thinking and feeling. Data were collected by asking participants about the
stories and meanings of their names. After the interview with the participants, 4 themes were
extracted by comparison.
The strong point of the article may be useful for further research. People who are researching,
interested in, wanting to change their name, or wondering about its story can examine the
study. People may question and reflect on their own name while reading the research. And in
fact, research was presented to help children understand how important it is to be named, that
they should have the freedom to change it whenever they want, that the family should react
consciously in this situation. It makes sense for people to be university graduates because now
they will be in a position to know that they have reached a certain level of maturity, so they
can associate it with the essence of their names.
We can say that the weak point of the article is the small number of participants and the
participation of only Middle East Technical University students. However, since the number
of samples should be small in the IPA method and this should be the case in qualitative
research, it is said that under-sampling was used. Therefore, the study is not suitable for
generalization. It was not intended to increase the number of participants, but a few more
participants with the same name could have been found and compared. It is a weak point for
this study as it may be normal for people to think that the name given to them is
psychologically identified with them because it is not their choice. The other weakness is to
listen to the story of the name from a single person. Because there is also the possibility that
the story is not told, forgotten or told by skipping.

sorusu “İsmin hayatın şekillenmesinde rolü var mı, etkileri nelerdir?” sorusudur. Araştırmanın
amacı isimlerin hayatımızı nasıl etkilediğini yorumlamaktı.
Araştırmanın katılımcıları Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi öğrencilerinden seçilmiştir.
İsimlerinin hikayelerini bilen 6 kişi seçildi. Veriler Yorumlayıcı Fenomenolojik Analiz
yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. IPA, katılımcının ne düşündüğünü ve hissettiğini anlamak için
kullanılan yöntemdir. Katılımcılara isimlerinin hikayeleri ve anlamları sorularak veriler
toplanmıştır. Katılımcılarla yapılan görüşme sonrasında karşılaştırma yapılarak 4 tema
çıkarılmıştır.
Makalenin güçlü noktası, daha fazla araştırma için faydalı olabilir. Araştırma yapan, ilgilenen,
adını değiştirmek isteyen veya hikayesini merak edenler çalışmayı inceleyebilir. İnsanlar
araştırmayı okurken kendi adlarını sorgulayabilir ve düşünebilir. Ve aslında araştırma,
çocuklara isim vermenin ne kadar önemli olduğunu, istedikleri zaman değiştirme özgürlüğüne
sahip olmaları gerektiğini, ailenin bu duruma bilinçli tepki vermesi gerektiğini anlamalarına
yardımcı olmak için sunuldu. İnsanların üniversite mezunu olmaları mantıklı çünkü artık belli
bir olgunluğa eriştiklerini bilecek ve bunu isimlerinin özü ile ilişkilendirebilecek durumda
olacaklar.
Makalenin zayıf noktasının katılımcı sayısının azlığı ve sadece Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi
öğrencilerinin katılımı olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Ancak IPA yönteminde örneklem sayısının az
olması gerektiği ve nitel araştırmalarda da böyle olması gerektiği için eksik örneklemenin
kullanıldığı söylenmektedir. Bu nedenle araştırma genellemeye uygun değildir. Katılımcı
sayısını artırmak amaçlanmamıştı ama aynı isimde birkaç katılımcı daha bulunup
karşılaştırılabilirdi. İnsanların kendilerine verilen ismin kendi seçimleri olmadığı için
psikolojik olarak kendileriyle özdeşleştiğini düşünmeleri normal olabileceğinden bu çalışma
için zayıf bir noktadır. Diğer bir zayıflık ise ismin hikayesini tek bir kişiden dinlemektir.
Çünkü hikayenin anlatılmamış, unutulmuş veya atlanarak anlatılmamış olma ihtimali de
vardır.

question of the research is "How is the housemate and the social dynamic structure between
them?". The aim of the research is to explain the common home life, lifestyles, harmony with
each other, values and expectations from each other.

The participants of the study were found by word of mouth, that is, by suggesting an
interview. Participants were selected from 37 people with experience and current housemates.
The data were analyzed by dicourse analysis.
