Ella and the Ogres: 00:38:08- 00:39:18

● Ella has a run in with some Ogres and attempts to reason with them. This symbolizes
Ellas' empathy for the Ogres and other races. The only reason they can’t reason with them
is the Ogres' deep mistrust in humans because of the years they were mistreated.
Hold your tongue: 00:13:07- 00:13:17
● Ella and her step-sister are in a heated debate at school about politics. Her step sister at
one point gets frustrated at Ella because Ella is able to rebut all of her points. She then
tells her to hold her tongue which figuratively means to stop speaking and to be
respectful but because her obedience gift is literal she actually holds her tongue which
causes her to lose the debate. This shows the control people will always have over her.
Benny the boyfriend book: 00:27:02- 00:27:54
● Benny the Boyfriend book was a spell gone wrong by Ellas godmother. When Ella
prepares to leave home in search of the Fairy so he can get her free will back, her
godmother gives her this book. This represents her being watched over. When her mom
died, she had her godmother to watch over her because she didn’t feel close to her dad.
Now she is leaving home with no one to watch over her except Benny the Boyfriend
book.
Ella protests Ogrecide: 00:16:12- 00:16:30
● Ella actively protests the hurtful treatment of the Ogres in their kingdom. This shows
Ella’s compassion for everyone around her.
Ella beats up the men in the forest: 00:30:37- 00:31:09
● This also relates to Ella showing compassion to people who do not look like society's
“normal standards”. In this scene, Ella interferes with some robin hood type people are
torturing this elf.
Somebody to love: 00:50:30- 00:54:02
● This scene is Ella performing for the giants against her will. The forceful dancing and
singing from the giants shows how shy Ella actually is. She only breaks out of her shell
when she gets told to.
Ellas attempt to kill the prince: 01:16:05- 01:18:55
● The surrounding area is darker than Ella and Char, making the scene very dark and tense.
There is a close up shot of Char and Ella kind of slowly dancing in the Hall of Mirrors,
then Char gets down on one knee with soft romantic music in the background. The
camera pans upward looking down on Char while he proposes. Then as the clock strikes
midnight, you can hear the chime of Ella’s obedience going off and the music becomes
tense as the camera pans to show the dagger behind Ella’s back. As she raises the dagger
she looks behind her in the mirror, the camera shows the perspective of Ella looking at
herself and Char with the dagger in the air. Then the background starts to swim almost
making the audience feel a little disoriented, she hears the different commands people
make her do throughout the movie then she hears her mother telling her that her strength
and free-will has been inside her this whole time. Then the music goes quiet and she
looks herself in the mirror almost commanding herself to not be obedient anymore. Then
the camera angle shifts and the audience is now looking through the eyes of Char as he
looks in a different mirror and sees Ella holding a dagger above him and yelling “I will
no longer be obedient”, the shot then cuts to Ella’s hand as she drops the dagger
Ella and the Prince kiss: 00:55:05- 00:57:25
● The scene is framed with the fireplace behind them, the background has noises of people
chattering and a soft romantic tune playing. The fireplace is casting shadows on their
faces giving their faces this soft glow. The camera keeps cutting to each face giving the
audience the feel of being a part of their conversation.
After the battle: 01:21:55- 01:24:26
● The shot begins with a close up of Char and Ella as they kiss and you hear in the
background someone yelling “NO” which causes the camera to cut to Ella’s step-sisters
as they run over to Ella and Char. The background is a lot of people from the coronation.
The step-sisters are jealous of Ella and without knowing her obedience is gone
commands Ella to never kiss Char again. The camera cuts to Ella’s face as she says you
wanna bet which gives a little bit of humor to this scene.
Ella almost gets run over: 00:18:55- 00:19:31
● Char and Ella are having a discussion and Ella starts to walk away. The camera pans as
Ella walks but stops when she stops walking as Ella realizes she forgot her purse. Char
tells her to stay right there and you can hear the chime of her obedience. Then the music
gets more tense as Ella turns around and the camera cuts to a horse and cart rapidly
approaching, the camera becomes unstable to show the cart is move at a fast pace, the
camera cuts to Ella’s feet as she tries to move but everytime she moves the chime of
obedience goes off signifying her not being able to move. The camera is rapidly
switching between Ella and the cart not really giving time for the audience to properly
comprehend each shot which adds to the stress and tense nature of the shot. As this rapid
switching then leads to Char knocking her over, into grass and out of harm's way.

● Power over people, selflessness: King Edgar realized Ellas obedience charm and
immediately used it to his advantage by using her to kill Char and make sure he has
complete control over the kingdom. Ella is selfless because she literally ties herself up to
a dead tree to prevent her obedience from forcing her to kill Char.
