Section 1 – Clay Terms

Below is a list of clay vocabulary we will use in the classroom during our clay unit.

Match the letters of the corresponding words to the definitions in section 2

Section 2 – Definitions

The cooking of clay at elevated temperatures to make it harden

Scratching a surface of clay, before adding slip, as a method of joining bodies of clay

Oven like machine where clay is fired

Roll of clay in long, thin, sausage like shape

Mixture that is applied to ceramics pieces, to add color and glossy, glass finish

Kneading clay mix and to remove all air bubbles

Surface quality

A skeleton used to support the weight of clay, and help it keep shape
Section 3 – Stages of Clay

Below are the stages of clay and their definitions. Put the number of the stage in order 1-6. (Hint: Think
wet to dry)

Bone Dry: Clay that is dry and ready to be fired. Very Fridge. Also Called Greenware.

Glazeware: Clay that has been fired again with glaze.

Slip: watered down clay that can be used as pottery glue

Plastic: clay you can easily mold and model

Bisqueware: Clay that has been fired once in the kiln. Can never turn back into wet clay.

Leather-hard: clay that is somewhat dry. Good for carving
