The Way Forward ………

The events of the past two years have impacted and altered all
areas of our daily lives. The traditional methods of commerce,
trade, travel, movement and even education. Within the sphere of
education, teachers have had to adapt the methodology used for
instruction, utilize and infuse more technology and adopt new
paradigms for evaluation. This change in education, challenging
for many, is expected to be the new normalized mode for future
generations. The pandemic has therefore been the catalyst for
revolutionizing education throughout the entire world. One such
change is the movement from teacher centered education to
student centered modes.

The way forward for successful Student Centered Learning

requires changes from all stake holders.

Students
 Students must understand their active and proactive roles
in this approach where they become active participants,
as opposed to the traditional where they were passive
receptors.
 Students will have to identify the need for self actualisation
and self motivation as learning would depend on their
individual initiatives.
 Students would identify the inherent need for enhancing
their digitisation skills as they are expected to maneuver in
an environment that is heavily influenced by technology and
the virtual world.
 Students are afforded the opportunity to develop and
explore their interests and develop in an environment that
caters to individual learning styles and multiple
intelligences.
 Students would all realize that their learning is not confined
to a physical classroom.

Teachers
 Teachers will have to adapt their roles to one of being a
facilitator, rather than directing the teaching/learning
process.
 Teachers would need to upskill and retool their
technological skills as they provide innovative and diverse
environments for this type of learning to become a reality.
 A shift in focus from regular standardized  paper and pencil
testing  to one that utilizes various methods of evaluation.
 Teachers must allow students to discover and learn
concepts.
 Encourage students to express themselves and think
critically, rather than emphasizing rote learning and
regurgitation of facts and concepts.
 Provide tasks that are scaffolded to cater to diverse
intelligences in the student group.
Parents
 Parents are encouraged to accept and appreciate that
learning in this method will not be confined to a physical
classroom and isn't bound by traditional methodology.
 Parents are encouraged to upskill their technological skills
in order to be able to be constantly apprised of the progress
of the students.
 Recognize that other forms of evaluation are also credible as
paper and pencil examinations.
 Provide the environment that will facilitate students being
able to function effectively and excel in this new
dispensation.
 Parents would provide guidance, support and advice rather
than completing the tasks assigned to the students.
The Education Authorities.
 The provision of classrooms where wifi is accessible and the
upgrading of bandwidths to allow multiple connections,
simultaneously.
 Acceptance of alternative methods of evaluation.
 Provision of training for teachers, parents and students.
 Allow flexibility in learning. Eg. A blended approach.
 Encourage and reward innovation among teachers and
students.
