Hamlet

Human nature revolves around wanting what they can not have. In Hamlet there are different

perceptions of people and their character. The theme presents the idea of Revenge and the

consequences of greed and what people most desire in the play. The play highlights social issues

that were present in that era which is related to the social issues seen now in the present.

Shakespeare wanted to express the idea of all stereotypes involving women's roles opposed to

men as well as the nature of human wants and influences, resulting in them going insane over the

fact that the distance between them and their desire is so far away. The great tragedy of the

king’s death in Hamlet resulted in chaos and people turning on each other to get what they want

the most. The morals of the characters changed as the story progressed, along with their values.

Character interactions heavily influenced the change of values seen throughout the play. Hamlet

also can be sub-categorized as a revenge play, the genre popular in the Elizabethan and Jacobean

periods. Elements common to all revenge tragedies include a hero who must avenge an evil deed,

often encouraged by the apparition of a close friend or relative. Then there were also many signs

of people's weaknesses being exposed, causing madness, reflecting on the characters. Although

those around him can and do act upon their thoughts, Hamlet was stifled by his consuming

insecurities. From the moment Hamlet confronts the spirit of his father, and consistently
Carson2

throughout the play from that point on, what he was sure of in one scene he doubts in the next.

With the soul desiers, Hamlet knows that it is the spirit of his father on the castle wall, and he

fully understands its unmistakable cry for revenge. The characters throughout the play could not

fight the selfish urge of power. Shakespear pressed on the social issues we have in the present.

With the issues he has presented, as well as the smaller but powerful roles people have on other

characters in the play, for exaple Ophelia and her father the action of what Claudies did effected

one who affected the others the, different values they all have and some that they share, but both

can not posess. The driven values that they continued to push while using modern time ideas and

social issues to fight for what they believed and wanted not counting the circumstance or

consequence of their actions. A character as Ophelia did not have vengeance as much but fell

into madness due to the ones around her and could not take the obsession of confused feelings

that Hamlet had or even her father possessed of hate, selfishness and greed. Throughout Hamlet

it gives more thoughts and reason for the expressed values and principles in Shakespeare writing

presents on the relationship of social issues and the lesson that is given, with these ideas of those

who give off the negative energy of wrong and evil concepts. the end result can be death and the

building up of how one wrong move can cause the fall of relationships and in the noble in this

case the fall of a kingdom because of madness that spread and the different characteristics that

are given show there different values and what they believe is best for them to be successful in

what they want, Ophelia as an example the problems that resulted in corruption of her mind,

because of the deceit and revenge craved by characters. Ophelia’s values soon seem to drive her

into madness because of the conflicts that soon are put into play because of the death of Hamlet,

her once love, father.

Carson3

Ophelia's character expresses the values of peace and wanted for everything and everyone to be

at piece, including no corruption or fighting, as all this went on she continued to try to call and

bring things to peace but as said before only brought more war than peace, She is characterized

as innocent and not know what to do in tough situations he is childlike and naïve in nature She is

unaware of the harsh realities of life, Ophelia obeys hamlet, but Hamlet has a sexist outburst as a

result of her actions. Hamlet is kind to Ophelia at first, but then he turns on her: he denies ever

loving her, inquires about her father's whereabouts, criticizes womankind, and advises her to join

a nunnery. She becomes crazy, later in act 4, she dies under mysterious circumstances. Ophelia's

tragedy was a cause of losing her innocence due to no fault of her own.Ophelia's main counters

were with hamlet and was characterized as hamlet love. Ophelia counters that beauty and purity

are inexorably tied. Beauty, according to Hamlet, can turn honesty into a "bawd," but truth

cannot purify a bad lady. Hamlet tells Ophelia, "I did love you once," to which she replies that he

merely made them believe he did. But like said before she ended up dying from an ambiguous

circumstance. Although later on in the play he says how much he dislikes her and he is focused

on finding and avenging his father, the change of feelings and love shows with other characters

as if they had no remorse with what they lose. Ophelia feels fully convinced that Hamlet has lost

his mind. Here she mourns the downfall of one of Denmark’s most promising young gentlemen,

the “rose of the fair state.”

“Oh, what a noble mind is here o’erthrown!

The courtier’s, soldier’s, scholar’s eye, tongue, sword,

Th’ expectation and rose of the fair state,

The glass of fashion and the mold of form,

Carson4

Th’ observed of all observers, quite, quite down!”

(III.i.)

Ophelia’s mournful words indicate her sadness at the prince’s downfall, and they also

foreshadow her own descent into madness. Ophelia has changed her perspective on Hamlet and

is in chaos with all the conflict between the king and hamlet, as well as her father who is no help

to healing her madness. Ophelia begins to sing representing her madness leading her to a horade

end,

“Young men will do’t if they come to’t,

By Cock they are to blame.

(IV.v.)”

Some of her songs seem to be about her father’s death, but others, like this one, concern

premarital sex. As well as the lines quoted above suggest that Ophelia and Hamlet may have had

a sexual relationship, or at least that some form of sexual desire existed between them. However,

given the state of her mind at this stage of the play. All this led to Ophelia's horrid death and end

of the madness through her thoughts and feelings for Hamlet. Gertrude explained earlier that

Ophelia fell into a water bucket by accident, but made no attempt to save herself. If that’s what

happened, then Ophelia’s death could be interpreted as a suicide. The end result of this was that

Ophielia death in means of her will to remain in “ground unsanctified” until the end of time, a

sentiment that drives the tragedy of her story home. Ophelia is a very pure soul who was

corrupted by her family and friends, the ones she loved in conflict of revenge and selfishnet

resulting in her madness and death. Ophelia east all good but her mind was crowded by blame
Carson5

towards others, the conflict that accused had her mind in a knot, her values of wanting peace

crowded the idea of the wrong that had happened, the deseat and revenge and the end of the

inevitable deaths. Not only physically but in her mind, and thoughts being destroyed leading her

to the madness that the other characters have had because of their biases and values towards

revenge and power.

Carson6

In Hamlet the theme gives the big idea of Revenge and Selfishness, many characters in the play

give the idea of them fighting for what they believe and love more even if it means that they had

to kill or hinder what they once loved. There is also a lot of backstabbing as well as two sided

people who try to be decisive for them to succeed there goal. For example, Hamlet wrote a letter

to Ophelia saying "I loved Ophelia, forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of

love, make up my sum" Act three Scene 1. She is the daughter to Polonius, the sister of Laertes,

and she was romantically linked with Hamlet until the beginning of the play's events. Ophelia

was cautioned by Laertes or Polonius not to trust Hamlet's expressions of love. Polonius forces

Ophelia to return Hamlet's letters and renounce his love at the beginning of Act Three. Polonius

is in his own way selfish and wants his own way of things to be done even though he is not in

power affecting his daughter and Hamlet. His utter selfishness makes him incapable of making

rational decisions that are beneficial to both himself, and his children. “See you now, Your bait

of falsehood take this carp of truth, And thus do we of wisdom and of reach,...” (II.i.) Polonius

gives good advice that he does not take himself, showing his hypocritcal decision making.

Ophelia, Polonius' daughter, is affected by the bias of Polonius' has of Hamlet. Although the only

person in the pay who did not show these aspects of selfishness or revenge would be horatio,

with no vengeance at all for anyone he showed his loyalty to hamlet. Horatio urged Hamlet not

to go through with the duel against Laertes, a warning that proves to be legitimate in the end, as

Laertes’s plot with Claudius ends up killing Hamlet. As the revenge and selfishness circled

around between characters Horatio had only the intention to stay loyal to Hamlet with no wrong

intentions present. Such as with Hamlet mother as well, “Do not forever with thy vailèd lids Seek

for thy noble father in the dust Thou know'st ’tis common: all that lives must die Passing through

nature to eternity.” - Gertrude, Hamlet interprets Gertrude’s lines as evidence as “cold mother”
Carson7

does not feel any grief about her late husband’s passing. But in his rush to reject his mother’s

performance of grief, Hamlet seems not to notice the way her phrase “vailèd lids'' implicitly

feminizes him. Hamlet is in anger because the mother is just so quick to move on and Claudius

just feels as though Hamlet should just let his fathers death go. Hamlet's anger for his mother

grows because he shows no sympathy and shows she only cares about what her new roles are as

a new wife to her dead husband's, “the purpose of playing whose end, both at the first and now,

was and is to hold as ‘twere the mirror up to Nature (III.ii.)” Giving the quote Hamlet confronts

in frustration and tries to show his mother what the wrong she is doing. She thinks he's crazy and

he continues on. Madness is shown throughout the book people going mad that there point or

idea is being mixed and confused,

“I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is

southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.

(II.ii.312–13)”

Here His words imply that, just as the wind only occasionally blows from the north-north-west,

so too is he only occasionally struck by madness. These words also contain a warning. When

Hamlet uses the proverbial expression "I know a hawk from a handsaw," he indicates that he

remains mostly in control of his faculties and that he can still distinguish between like and unlike

things. He is struck with madness because of all of the different things falling apart since his

father's death and the vengeance he has for his father. Also relating to the pervious ideas with

Ophilia the madness she possessed in the qoute,

“Her speech is nothing,

Carson8

Yet the unshapèd use of it doth move

The hearers to the collection. They yawn at it

And botch the words up fit to their own thoughts,

Which, as her winks and nods and gestures yield them,

Indeed would make one think there might be thought,

Though nothing sure, yet much unhappily.

(IV.v.7–13)”

What's interesting here is the gentleman's emphasis on how others strive to make sense of her

bewildering language. Ophelia seems to act in a way that implies her words are intentional.

THese incidents with Hamlet and Ophilas outbreaks and breakdowns show the madness they

possess as they try to seek comfort or satisfaction for the problems they face. The madness that

was represented, that shakespeare puts in his writing to repreasent the social problem and the

relationships of the characters alturing throughout the play, picking out the betrayal and the

deceit that was shown and the problems that grew, remind me of the phrase, “ who your real

friends are'', before the tragedy even occurred there was peace among most those who were close

grew distance as madness began to occur do to hamlets outrage and anger of the death of his

father. There were a few who stayed loyal to what they once valued as peace but as of the rest

showed their true intentions. Relating to how Shakespeare wanted to express the values humans

have of when they desire something most they will do anything in their power to have it come

true and make it happen. This resulted in ultimate punishment of da=eath as I explained before.
Carson9

The theme of revenge is a huge social issue in the Novel through people valuing revenge so

much they forget about the consequence. The relationship to having this social issue give the

lesson being learned by this from characters such as claudience who started this conflict through

his own value of power passing this anger through Hamlet who outrageous causing others to go

mad not for his reason but for their own values what they see as right or what fits there

perspective of the situation. The theme built up in this righting gives the basic breakdown of

social issues of the growth of power and what it can cause the Jealousy shown from Claudius and

the revenge as an effect coming from Hamlet through the chaos and driven situations that block

out the thought of consequences. The values of the characters are more important of how they

will be ultimately affected. The wanting of satisfaction of their needs is all they think about and

what they want most out of it all. Power ruling everything around them and the old time fashion

the urge or chance to overthrow the king is huge . The chance to be in power was wanted not by

all, such as claudius and Ophelia's father who had hatred towards Hamlet,

The new husband of his brother, Claudius who killed Hamlet's father as well as that being his

own brother to no remorse only guilt that he would enter heaven, as selfish as he is he tried to

think of all his ways he can get away with it. “O God, God,How weary, stale, flat and

unprofitableSeem to me all the uses of this world! (I.ii.)” Hamlet's feelings are deeper than the

once around him. Clauius prays that god will let him be free and him not having to live with the

guilt that he has.``Oh, my offense is rank. It smells to Heaven It hath the primal eldest curse

upon ’t,A brother’s murder.(III.iii.) Claudius utters these lines at the beginning of a soliloquy in

which he confesses to murdering his brother. Later on the play states “Laertes, was your father

dear to you? Or are you like the painting of sorrow, A face without a heart?(IV.vii.) Laertes

responds with deep offense to Claudius’s suggestion that he’s faked his grief, and he expresses
Carson10

an earnest drive for revenge. Unlike Hamlet, who keeps his rage largely to himself and trips

himself up with uncertainty and hesitation, Laertes speaks plainly, telling Claudius, he would cut

the throat of the man who killed his father. Showing that Claudius is trying to put himself first

for his love 0f himself and revenge from Hamlet comes from it. Claudius grieves very little as

the death of his brother does not affect him. The only thing that gives Claudius worry is if he gets

caught for the crime that he has done. Claudius has values of wanting power and doing anything

to have that. As well he begins to question if his wrong was actually grieved and tooken in if

people were facing what reality really showed.

“Laertes, was your father dear to you?

Or are you like the painting of a sorrow,

A face without a heart?

(IV.vii.)”

. Claudius’s questions Hamlet’s earlier doubts about the grief of his own mother, Gertrude, and

in this sense Claudius’s questions speak to the play’s larger anxiety about the mismatch between

appearance and reality. Clausius valuing power, his character presented as the villain who killed

the father of Hamlet causing the huge grief and madness to start. Although Clausius has caused

great damages he is weak and has done what he has done but quickly regrets it and starts to live

in the fear of what he has done and him being found out about, causing him to slowly fall into

madness and tell the truths of his wrongs. Even though his values at the beinging were mainly

the need for the power of the throne his values go into wanting his pain of what he has done to

go away. The burden that he carries slowly has him fall into madness but does not show like the
Carson11

rest. Claudius values relate to today's society because the small values that people have could be

the most deadliest. Clausius wasn't the most powerful man but his actions caused a king's power

to fall and those along with it. One conflict can cause massive destruction. Claudius is socially

adept, and his charm is genuine. He shows deep distress over his "dear brother's death" and

admiration for his wife.He knows the value of a great funeral, but quickly turns mourning into

celebration and moves on "With mirth in funeral and with dirge in marriage" to whatever lies

ahead. Claudius has almost controversial thoughts about all the situations that occurred though

he felt shame for what he has done he still did not doubt his follow up decisions of the shame

that he caused upon Hamlet's voice and values. The marriage of Hamlet's mother shows that

although Claudius showed grief he didn't have much sympathy enough to respect his brother's

wife but pretended to get where he wanted. Which is today's social issue of power and greed.

Claudius did not want his doings to be noted as wrong but he knew what he did was

unforgivable. Going back to the forgiveness he asked from God, was Claudius trying to find his

way out of the guilt which is what many people do,( find their way out of guilt), Claudious being

the cause of the conflict and the change of perspective that you have for the characters as their

values shine through. Show another theme of “ power is the root of all evil. This all results in

inevitable death as the consequences that we all seem to have to face sooner or later. In Claudius'

case he has killed a living one and was killed by a loved one all because of the values that were

most shown, revenge of what was most wanted by the main characters and affecting the other.

Shakespear, writing portrait characterizes of betrayal and and selfish nature among the

characters the characters express the e otino of revenge and wants, what they value most they

fight for even if it hurts thoughts who care about them most as though they are one sided and

want what's best for them even if it results in the death of others. This mindset of the characters
Carson12

and the atmosfer of misfit cause chaos and the characters to go mad.Hamlet gives off this

throughout the novel/ Film as things escalate. However, he does not and as a result, his failure

leads to the downfall of his nation. This tragedy informs the audience to be meticulous when

contemplating actions, or the lack thereof because there are always repercussions. There were

many moments showing women and men roles came to play as well as levels of power being

received , the taunting with and wanting of power and betrayal of the film was mainly pertaid

and put opponent through power, those in power had a higher chance of getting w\away with

what they wanted but those others still had to hide such as ophelia's father and ophelia herself.

The fight still continued through and revenge was the main character of this fight still shown

through at the end resulting in death. Shakespear expressed his thought on relation to social

issues that occur in society today the obsessed nature to get what they want or most desire, to do

anything in there power to get it even if it results in madness the want and need for more and

more shows the greedater of society that was shown by Clarities in the story, the madness of

Ophelia affected by those around her not knowing exactly what she wants but peace but is

conflicted with the wrong around her. And the want of satisfaction of Hamlet wanting vengeance

for his father all though affecting the ones he once held close and the once he told he loved but

does not no more. The deceivedness of the mother and her blinded by the wrong she is doing

because she wants the best for herself, all this causes conflict and destruction. This also bring the

point of satisfaction many characters were not satisfied or seen the destruction they were doing

or have done to themselves and others until it was to late there was moments when some

characters explain they are running into a world of madness but by then it was to late. Today

people drive themselves mad over what they believe is right for them, and as said before they do

anything for what they value and desire. The power and satisfaction of the wrongdoing came
Carson13

with a full satisfaction as shown towards the end of the novel instead of getting what they most

wanted. Although not all characters wanted where wrong or had wrong intentions there was

Heratio who was loyal and only loyal to Hamlet sacrificing himself for not what he wanted but

for others.A lesson was taught that seeking revenge as well as pursuing evil will not get you fare.

Another note relating to society the loyalty that Horatio had for Hamlet does happen even though

may not happen as often the exaggeration in the writing, of the parts that there are still people

who put their values towards the greater good and not only for selfish reasons as themselves. The

selfish values of the characters have affected the greater good characters to fall upon those who

may not deserve it but from just being involved with those who value wrong or evil things. As

well as those who seem so innocent could be counted for those who corrupt and get driven to

madness as well. The Role of Women in “Hamlet” As in many biblical stories, history has

proven time and time again that it is women who have always corrupted humanity. There has

been change in ideas with this but as will be said the connection of roles and power of men

women represented in the novel was presented. This all plays a part in today's society and how

there are still good people with good intentions surrounded by evil or vengeance values that are

trapped in and end up still suffering consequences of others actions all resulting in death. While

Hamlet’s idleness is exasperating, he demonstrates an informative experience of the dangers of

inaction. By embracing indecisiveness and avoiding risks, one can strip their potential and power

to bring change.
Carson14

Research paper

Hamlet gives a variety of social issues throughout the story giving different views and opinions

leading to the main facts of what the lesion that is being taught in the story. Social issues that are

being presented are beliefs, particularly about vengeance and deceit, and the consequences of
Carson15

doing wrong. Given this the problems are reflected in the social recollection of today's society.

Supporting of the plural social issues being represented a statement form, Boiko, Yana, and Vira

Nikonova, “The procedures of linguistic and cognitive modeling reveal possible directions of

applying the cognitive dimension of Linguistics in studying the plurality in translation regarding

to the fact that the epoch in which the translator lived and his own worldview can influence the

representation of the author's idea in translation.” Shakesper gives a clear understanding that he

tries to relate this righting to the issues of our society and the direct almost attack on how

society is portrayed in his own world view. From this he gives the issues of obsession with

vengeance with other aspects of deceit and consequences coming along with it. Another article,

Hamlet Themes (Revenge, Deception, Relevance Today) reveals the issues Shakespeare pro

trades and wanted to get across with relations of the writing with today's society he sees it to be,

“Modern day society is obsessed with a belief in revenge. The media constantly bombards

society with depictions of supposedly "sweet" revenge. Films and novels are often based entirely

around the heroic figure's quest for revenge, while newspapers portray stories of vengeance such

as wars, law suits and murder.” Giving this he expresses and exaggerates on the social problems

of not just in the novel but relations to today's society of revenge. The characters protraining this

such as Hamlet and wanting to seek the revenge of his father and wrestling in the consequence of

all that came song with it as well as the other characters as well all wanting one thing with selfish

intentions and reaping the consequences that come along with ist. Another quote by the same

article states, another statement on the relation of society to the novel/ film, “Hamlet challenges

many of today's conventional thoughts and beliefs, particularly about vengeance and deceit, and

the consequences of doing wrong. One of the morals of the play Hamlet is to forgive and forget

rather than plotting revenge. Another lesson from Hamlet concerns avoiding starting down a path
Carson16

of evil where deeds slowly become worse and worse without the person confronting their gradual

corruption.” The conception of the film/ novel gives an example of the social issue that we have

in society, Shakespeare expresses on and exaggerates greatly. The lesson that is being given

reflects on how corrupt society is today. The generalization of wanting and seeking revenge with

no acceptance to concequence. With the relations of the Elizabethan era of society with the

vengeance and the reactions as well as the characteristics of the play as well as the characters

actions, and the settings all show the relationship with Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era. A

quote from the article, “Analysis Of The Elizabethan Era And Shakespeare's Hamlet” states,

“The Elizabethan Era and Shakespeare’s Hamlet In a dramatic work that displays a story of

tragedy and revenge, William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is about a prince who discovers his father

was murdered by his uncle. Prince Hamlet later becomes infatuated with thoughts of revenge

which introduces the plot of the play.” The aspects of Elizabethan Era are shown throughout the

film/ novel giving the great ideas that Shakespeare is trying to portray through his writing of

revenge, deceit and lack of reculection of consequence. To add on another quote by the article

states, “Written during the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare incorporates aspects of that time in

order to engage the audience.”Shakespear saw great reason to add Elizabethan era as a great way

to engage the view to his rigging and portraying the lesion through it with the era. Shakespeare

wanted to use these ways in his Writing to show the issue in the view of society today or at the

time to reflect the issues that we have today and what is seen by him in his view point, He gives

the argument of revenge, deceit and ect. And puts it in a form using his view, society today and

Elizabethan era. To reflect upon what is protade as our issue in society and through the lesson of

consequences that comes with it. The 21 century even though it's not the exact same it still has

the same aspects of the film and novel, the issues are the same just in a different generation and
Carson17

age, many of these problems are in today's world which is also what Shakespeare appeared to

argue. Examples such as today's issues people today still find that revenge is what they seek

when it involves either something they love or want, could also be through deceit. But all end in

consequence as said before as Shakespeare expressed multiple times through death in the film/

Novel “ Hamlet”. As the consequence being death this is the ultimate end but in Hamlet death is

shown in multiple ways as the consequence of deceit and revenge. Death is not always finite in

this play, as when King Hamlet is killed, he shows up as a ghost to talk to Hamlet anyway. Also,

Hamlet is constantly either talking about or considering death, whether it is death for his

murderous uncle, or for himself, as he considers committing suicide to escape the pain. This

relentless thinking, I believe, showed that Hamlet was, in fact, dying throughout the whole play.

He was losing his faith in God, his faith in himself, and his faith in his family and friends. He

consequently began to crave death and desire the peaceful serenity that it would give to him,

though he was also fearing the anonymity that death would provide. Hamlet encountering death

which is where the madness started resulted in, Inevitably, this path leads not only to his own

death but the death of his family, the woman he loves, and ultimately the destruction of the

throne. This is placed into society because of how death can affect people and bring things that

were not shown before. Or even if it's not death the intentions or dark secrets people may have or

values that they put first. That are never shown or put there till the boundaries are pushed.

Shakespeare represents the evil people may have in their heart and how people end up showing

what the value most and putting that first no matter what comes with it which is the ultimate

ending, death.

For the sour I have used first, written by Boiko, Yana, and Vira Nikonova. I have used this

source because it showed the relation of the lives lived in society and the Shakespeare portrayal

of this idea in the novel relate very closely, but have differences that are shown as well, but

mainly because of the connection of the social issues we have today.

For my second scholarly source that I have presented is from the article, Hamlet Themes, I chose

this source because it showed more analysis on the theme of revenge and building up of

consequences as well as the key point when the deceased is shown. Giving similar ideas that I

have concluded.

I have also used an annoying article, “Analysis Of The Elizabethan Era And Shakespeare's

Hamlet Bartle by”, to help see more understanding on the connection of the Elizabethan Era to

see the roles that were given by Shakespeare to incorporate the Elizabethan Era which was

common at the type of hamlet being writen.

Another source that i have used was an article called “ANQ: A Quarterly Journal of Short

Articles, Notes and Review” I used this article to relate to my social issue because the use all

resulted in death and i would say not just overall physical death but dying of the sanity in the

novel, and i wanted to explain more on how shakespeare related that to today's society as the

inevitable death.
