A Rain Sensitive House Window Closes

Automatically When Raining

House windows are sometimes opened when it rains and no body around to close
them allowing rain going in side and damage the house.

• Information of the problem

In normal sunny days, people always leave the house windows open for air
circulation or allowing sun rays. In case if we forget the house windows opened or we
leave it because we do not expect rain might be fall, rains will fall inside the house. In
rainy countries, the amount of the rain is too much and it might destroy the whole house
if we forget or if we leave it open for other purposes, Water damage irrespective of the
source always causes devastating and the blow is really hard especially for the people
whose houses are located in rainy countries. When the water flows inside the house, it
begins the troubles time. The rain water runs through every personal belonging which
cause a financial loss. Also, water can damage furniture, devices or other valuable things.
We want to figure a device that will save this mistake. A lot of people do not think that
when rains fall a damage will happen to their houses but when it happen they will say in
repeatedly “I wish I closed the window” or “I wish I installed some devices that can close
the window automatically “. Think again!

1- Windows will be closed once the rain is detected using a rain sensor.

The sensor's software (known as Clarify) runs on Windows

operating systems ranging from Windows 98 to XP. The
software installation went off without a hitch. I ordered my
sensor with a 100 foot cable and mounted the sensor on the
lower roof of my house (Fig 1.). The cable was hidden
underneath the siding and snaked along the outside of the
house until it found its way into the family room. This is where
the observatory's weather computer resides. I could have gotten
away with only 50ft of cable, so the excess was coiled up and
placed behind the rack the holds the weather PC. The sensor
was attached to the house using 2 right angle brackets Boltwood
purchased at the local hardware store. The 2 brackets were Cloud/Rain Sensor
screwed together and then screwed to the side of the house.
The sensor was then attached to the brackets via nylon wire ties. No installation
brackets are included with the unit because there is no way for the manufacturer to
know how the customer will mount the unit. Some may mount it to a house, or a
observatory, or on a pole. The unit should be mounted with about a 10 degree tilt
facing the direction of the prevailing winds. According to the manufacturer’s
instructions this serves two purposes; it helps prevent rain water from building up on
the sensor plate, and it allows the sensor to see the clouds a bit earlier as they roll in.

The photo cell is connected to electrical starter which controls the motor that closes
the window. Whenever there is clouds accumulation, the photo cell will activate and
energize the motor. Motor will be stopped when the window is fully closed due to
activation of a limit switch or infrareds sensor is activated due to sensing obstruction.
The starter can be controlled by either photo cell or manual (bush button) _

• Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)

An uninterrupted power supply (UPS), also known as a battery back-up provides

emergency power and, depending on the topology, provide line regulation as well to
connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power
is not available. This will work as a back-up for the Boltwood Cloud/Rain Sensor and
the Photocell.

Boltwood system is the best system for closing the window when it rains. This
system matches all constraint and criteria. However, photocell is not working at night.
therefore is not sufficient in this situation.
