Industrial gearboxes are increasing in
power density: getting smaller in size while
maintaining or increasing their output and
performance. Protection technology is crucial
for extending gearbox life and oil drain
intervals while reducing oil consumption,
operating and manpower costs, and the
impact on the environment.
Using case hardened gears helps to achieve
higher power density, but can also increase
the risk of micropitting. At Afton Industrial, by
providing significantly improved resistance against
micropitting and general gear and bearing fatigue,
our advanced additive technology is extending the
life and improving the efficiency of today’s high-
performance gearboxes.
The need for reduced oil leakage, tighter seals
and corresponding oil make-up needs are also
critical to the latest OEM designs. Our extensive
research into additive/seal interactions has
helped us develop gear oils that fully support the
increasing shaft speeds and operating temperatures
of these gearboxes. Our technology undergoes
extensive paint compatibility testing to prevent
gear oils loosening inner gearbox paint, as this
paint incompatibility will lead to shorter oil change
