Answer ALL the Questions

Q. No. Question Description Marks

PART - A (30 Marks)

1 (a) Let 𝑋1 , 𝑋2 , ⋯ , 𝑋𝑛 be a random sample from the distribution having 𝑝𝑑𝑓 𝑓(𝑥) = 1, 𝜃 ≤ 10
1
𝑥 ≤ 𝜃 + 1. Show that the sample mean is an unbiased estimator of 𝜃 + 2.

OR
(b) Find the max. likelihood estimate of 𝜃 if 𝑋 ∼ 𝐵(𝑛, 𝜃). 10

2 (a) The IQ scores of VIT Bhopal University students are approximately 𝑁(𝜇, 100). To test 10
𝐻0 : 𝜇 = 110 against alternative hypothesis 𝐻1 : 𝜇 > 110, we select randomly 16 students
and observe 𝑥‾ = 113.5.

(a) Do we accept or reject 𝐻0 at the 1% significance level?

(b) Do we accept or reject 𝐻0 at the 5% significance level?
(c) Do we accept or reject 𝐻0 at the 10% significance level?

OR
(b) Show that the sequence < 𝑆𝑚 > defined by 10
1 1 1
𝑆𝑚 = + +········· +
1+𝑚 2+𝑚 𝑚+𝑚
is monotonically increasing and bounded.

3 (a) Turtle eggs are in high demand in the wet market, but in the market, a seller cheats people 10
by selling duck eggs or chicken eggs instead of turtle eggs. Customers are usually
deceived, probably because of the similarity in size of the eggs of the three species. Piyush
investigated this possible explanation and measured the length (in mm) of eggs of all three
species found in the nests of three species. The results are as follows:
Turtle: 22.0 23.9 20.9 23.8 25.0
24.0 21.7 23.8 22.8 23.1
23.1 23.5 23.0 23.0
Duck: 21.8 23.0 23.3 22.4 23.0
23.0 23.0 22.4 23.9 22.3
22.0 22.6 22.0 22.1 21.1
Hen: 23.0
19.8 22.1 21.5 20.9 22.0
21.0 22.3 21.0 20.3 20.9
22.0 20.0 20.8 21.2 21.0

Construct an ANOVA table to test the equality of the three means at 5% level of
significance.

OR
(b) Show that the series: 2 + 3 + 4 + ⋯ is convergent and find its sum. 10

PART - B (20 Marks)

4 Suppose 𝑋 and 𝑌 are independent random variables with the same unknown means 𝜇. 10
Both 𝑋 and 𝑌 have variance as 36. Let 𝑇 = 𝑎𝑋 + 𝑏𝑌 be an estimator of 𝜇. (i) Show that
𝑇 is an unbiased estimator of 𝜇 if 𝑎 + 𝑏 = 1. (ii) If 𝑎 = 1/3 and 𝑏 = 2/3, what is the
variance of 𝑇. (iii) What choice of 𝑎 and 𝑏 minimizes the variance of 𝑇 subject to the
requirement that 𝑇 is an unbiased estimate of 𝜇.

5 1 1 1 10
Show that the series 1𝑝 + 2𝑝 + 3𝑝 + ⋯ ∞ is convergent if 𝑝 > 1 and divergent if 𝑝 ≤ 1.
