Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1. The masses of 80 durians in an orchard are recorded and summarized in the table below.

Mass (m kg) Number of durians

0.4 < m≤ 0.8 10
0.8 < m ≤ 1.0 6
1.0 < m ≤ 1.2 18
1.2 < m ≤ 1.4 13
1.4 < m ≤1.6 22
1.6 < m ≤ 1.8 9
1.8 < m ≤ 2.0 2

(a) Construct a histogram to illustrate the distribution of the masses of the durians. [3 marks]

(b) The durian is marketed if its mass is more than 0.8 kg. Calculate the mean and mode of the marketed
durians. [4 marks]
Hence, with a reason, state the shape of the distribution of the masses of the marketed durians.

2. The events S and T are such that P(T) = , P(S) = and P(T’/S) = . Find P(S ∩ T) and P(S ∪ T).

[4 marks]
Hence, determine whether the events S and T are

(a) mutually exclusive and independent. [3 marks]

(b) exhaustive. [1 marks]

3. The time delay, X in hours, of a flight in a day is a continuous random variable which has probability density
function, f(x) given by

2k
f ( x )=
{ 5
x,
x (2 k−3 x ),∧¿ 0 ,
0< x ≤1
1< x ≤ 2
otherwise
where k is constant.

5
(a) Show that k = . [2 marks]

(b) Calculate the expected time delay of the flight. [2 marks]
(c) Find the cumulative distribution function of X and hence, calculate the probability that the time delay
of the flight is more than 0.5 hour for three consecutive days. [3 marks]

4. A new medicine is produced to treat an disease. The Health Department carries out a survey to determine
the effectiveness of this medicine. It is estimated that 70% of the patients will be recovered. A random
sample of 50 patients is selected.

(a) Calculate the probability that at most 60% of them are recovered. [2 marks]

(b) It is found that 42 of the patients have recovered. Obtain a 95% symmetric confidence interval for the
population proportion of the patients who have recovered after taking this medicine.
Interpret your answer. [4 marks]

5. The weight of the women is normally distributed with mean 55 kg and variance, σ 2. A beauty centre
believes that the two-months slimming programme is able to reduce the weight. After the end the
programme,
a random sample of 40 women is selected and the weight, x kg, of each women is measured. The results are
summarised as follows.

∑ x = 1980 and ∑ x 2 = 111400

(a) Calculate the unbiased estimate for the population variance,σ 2. [2 marks]

(b) Perform a test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether the slimming programme is effective.
[5 marks]

6. An education official conducts a survey on 50 dropout students to study the relationship between the dropout
and the income of the family in a particular residential area. The results are summarised in the contingency
table below.

Number of dropouts
Male student Female student
Perform a χ 2 test, at 10%
Low 13 5
Income significance level, to
Medium 5 8 determine whether there is a
of the family
High 9 10 relationship between the
dropout
and the income of the family. [7 marks]

Section B [15 marks]

Answer one question only in this section.
2
You may answer all the questions but only the first question will be marked.

7. (a) The classification of 30 shirts according to the colour and the size are shown in the table below.

Small Medium Large

Blue 5 6 3
White 4 10 2

(i) Calculate the probability that a randomly chosen shirt is blue or not large. [3 marks]

(ii) Show the probability that at least one small size shirt in five randomly chosen shirts is 0.8572
and hence, find the probability that there are two medium size shirts given that at least one small
size shirt. [5 marks]

(b) There are three car service centres X, Y and Z in a particular area. The probabilities that a car of a certain
model coming to car service centres X, Y and Z are 0.30, 0.45 and 0.25 respectively. The probabilities of
the car have major service in these service centres are 0.15, 0.20 and 0.30 respectively.

(i) Find the probability that a car coming to service X and has major service. [1 mark]

(ii) Find the probability that a car has a major service. [2 marks]

(iii) Find the probability that a car coming to service centre Y or Z given that it has major service.

(i) Find the minimum sample size, correct to nearest integer, of the number of tins of paint to be taken
so that the probability that at least one tin of paint below the standard quantity is more than 0.95.
[3 marks]

(ii) Calculate the probability that, out of 15 tins of paint, the number of tins of paint below the standard
quantity is more than the mean. [2 marks]

(iii) Using a suitable approximation, calculate the probability that, out of 200 tins of paint, at most
40 tins of paint below the standard quantity. [3 marks]
