1. A shopkeeper’s record shows the a mount of sales, in RM, for 30 days. His results
are summarized by = 63 000 and ) 2 = 59 000 where denotes the mean
sales for 30 days. Calculate and the standard deviation of the sales over 30 days.

2. Channel TutorTV is an education television for participating schools equipped with TV sets.
A survey show that 38 % of all schools subscribe to Channel TutorTV. Of these subscribers,
3 % never use the broadcast, while 15 % use more than 5 times per week. Find the
probability that a randomly selected school
(a) subscribes to Channel TutorTV and never use the broadcasts. [3 marks]

the total crop weight, x kg, of each plant. The results are summarized as
follows :

Find the unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance of crop
weight per plant. [ 3 marks ]
The horticulturist wishes to test the null hypothesis that the mean crop
weight per plant is 3 kg against the alternative hypothesis that the crop
weight per plant is less than 3 kg. Carry out the test at 10 % level of
significance. [ 4 marks ]

8. A pharmaceutical company is examined a new drug in pill form which is

about to be marketed nationwide. In the examination process, the mass of
the pill is considered one of the crucial part of the process. In a random of
100 pills taken and masses, X, are recorded, the results are as follows.

(a) Calculate the unbiased estimate of the mean and variance of X. [5 marks]
(b) If X is normally distributed, calculate a 95 % confidence interval
for the mean X. Explain the confidence interval that you obtain. [5 marks ]
(c) Another group of number of pills are taken in order to have a closer and
more detail examination. In a random sample of 50 pills taken, the
results are as follows.
50 50

x
i 1
i = 625 x
i 1
2
i = 7 815

For Ho to be rejected,

Zα> 1.172 1

From tables,

Therefore the largest level of significance level at which the test would 1
