a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the cheese cakes produced. [3 marks]

b) Find the median and interquartile range of the cheese cakes produced. [3 marks]

c) Draw a box and whisker plot to represent the data. Comment of the shape of this distribution.

2 For events A and B are independent such that P(A) = 0.4 and P(A∪ 𝐵) = 0.88 . Find
a) P(B) [3 marks]

b) P(A ∩ 𝐵)′ [2 marks]

3. The continuous random variable X has probability density function

𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 , − 1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑐
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = {

b) Find the cumulative probability distribution. [3 marks]

4. A company’s management is concerned about the quality of the pens that it provides to their staffs.
The company purchasing department tests a random sample of 200 such pens and finds that 24 of
them fail to write immediately.

a) Calculate an approximate 96 % confidence interval for the proportion of pens that fail to write
immediately. [5 marks]

b) The suppliers of the pens to the company claims that there are 3 in 50 pens fail to write
immediately. Comment with numerical justification, on the supplier’s claim. [2 marks]

5. The 95% confidence interval for the mean length of life, in hours, of a particular brand of light
bulb is (1023.3, 1101.7). This interval is based on results from a random sample of 36 light bulbs.
Find the value of the sample mean 𝑥̅ , and the standard deviation 𝛔, of the normal population
from which the sample is drawn. [4 marks]

6 The manager of a firm claims that each employee in the firm works for an average of 8 hours per
day. However, from the staff feedback, this figure is an underestimation. The manager attempts to
verify this information by surveying 88 randomly chosen employees .Let the time spent by an
employee in the office in a day be x hours, the sample data for the 88 workers are summarized
by ∑ 𝑥 = 735.68 and ∑ 𝑥2 = 6636. 5

a) Calculate unbiased estimates of the mean and variance of the time spent by each employee in
the office in a day. [4 marks]

b) Test at the 5% significance level whether the manager’s claim of 8 hours is an underestimation
of the mean number of hours spent by each employee in the office in a day.

7 A random variable T, in hours, represents the life-span of a thermal detection system. The
probability that the system fails to work at time t hour is given by

8 A machine cuts wood to form stakes, which are supposed to be 2 metres long. A random sample of
40 stakes is taken, the stakes are accurately measured and their lengths (x cm) are summarized by:
∑(𝑥 − 200) = 41.56 and ∑(𝑥 − 200)2 = 107.4673

a) Calculate unbiased estimates for the mean and variance of the stake length. [5 marks]

b) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the mean stake length. [4 marks]

c) By using the results in (b) , test at the 5% significance level, the null hypothesis that the
population mean is 2 metres against the alternatives that this is not the case. [3 marks]

d) Find the least sample size that must be taken so that the mean stake length is estimated with an
error within 0.5 cm with a confidence level of 98%. [3 marks]
