FREUD’S DEFENSE MECHANISMS

All of them are UNCOUNSCIOUS except for Suppression.

The following are similar but different:

* Displacement & Acting out

 Displacement: emotion is redirected.


 Acting out: emotion is covered up.

* Reaction formation & Undoing & Sublimation

 Reaction formation: you find a way to stop, what you consider unacceptable, by transforming
into the exact opposite.
 Undoing: putting into action, the exact opposite of the unacceptable behaviour.
 Sublimation: you find a way to do what you consider unacceptable, by making it acceptable.

* Repression & Suppression

 Repression: not aware of mechanism, unconscious forgetting.


 Suppression: aware of mechanism, conscious forgetting.

In the case of  Introjection: modeling behaviour after a more powerful person, said person is not
always admired!!!

Think of:

 Paranoid delusions in Projection.


 Substance abuse in Denial, Acting Out.
 Borderline Personality Disorder in Splitting, Passive-Agressive
 Enuresis in Regression.
 Somatoform Disorders in Somatization.
 Phobias as a result of Displacement.
 Blunted affect of schizophrenics in Isolation of Affect.
 Obsesive-Compulsive Anxiety Disorder as a result of Intellectualization.
 Obsesive-Compulsive behaviors in Undoing
 Dissociative disorder in Depersonalization.
