Scene 1- Initial Briefing

a. The scene opens up on the familiar sight of the Golden Gate bridge. The 24c has
been kind to San Francisco with the tall buildings creating an impressive skyline.
In the foreground you see the grounds of the Starfleet Academy, a place as much
known for its studies and research as it is for its military and exploratory
missions. The grounds consist of several buildings with well manicured green
areas between them. All along the promenades you can see students and faculty
moving between classes. In nearly every open area with shade students lie about
studying or taking advantage of the nice weather.

Your group is moving quickly towards the administration building, a large triangle
towards the middle of the grounds. You have been called by Commander T’rel to
receive instructions on your final test. As you enter the building you are still taken
aback by the giant holo projection that dominates the cieling. It cycles through
important ships in the history of Starfleet, you take a moment to marvel at the
generations of Enterprises before continuing.

You enter the Commander’s office and she is sitting at her desk.

“You are a minute late, I am sure you can do better than that. You have each
been selected to take part in a new hands on final exam. You will be exposed to
a series of holodeck away missions that will test your basic skills, and see how
you work together as a team. This will determine where you are placed when you
leave the academy. Any questions?”
b. The girls are brought together and told that they're going to be tested and then
placed on their Starship. Their initial ranks and starship placement will be
affected by performance. The Duty officer is Commander T’rel a female Vulcan
who has been with the academy for a while. She is known for being tough but fair
c. The test will include them acting as an away team on a series holodeck missions,
each mission will present them with a series of challenges that will involve them
working together.
i. Exceptional performance would be rewarded with the rank of LTJG
d. The Holodeck Planets
i. Efenia V- Jungle Planet
1. On Efenia they will be investigating an observation outpost that
has been abandoned for unknown reasons.
ii. Roti III- Toxic Atmosphere
1. On Roti they will be looking into seismic activity that is threatening
a nearby colony.
iii. Siana VI- Swampy Planet
1. They will be handling a biological research outing on a planet with
a prewarp society. This will involve not violating the Prime
Directive.
e. They will be given time to gather supplies before the mission which will start at
0600 tomorrow morning
2. Scene 2- Gather Supplies
a. Traveling through the corridors of the administration building the cadets find
themselves in the Exchange. A room with several large replicators capable of
making most of the gear a cadet might. Wandering the room in his gold uniform is
a Tellarite with long tusks and a black beard,Chief Petty Officer Noriht. The joke
is it would be easier to just reinvent the replicator than to get the Chief to
authorize something you shouldn’t have.

“Mission Parameters, and authorizations” He grunts in a vaguely scots accent.

b. A chance for social interactions with the quartermaster. This is a grumpy Tellarite
Chief named Noriht.
i. While most things are made directly through the replicators, many plans
are restricted and need permission from the Quartermaster to use.
ii. They were given rough ideas of what sorts of challenges they were going
to be facing. This should give them the chance to prepare appropriately. If
the players can't think of anything else, suggest at least Type 1 phasers,
basic tricorders, and a medical toolkit.
3. Scene 3- Efenia V
a. As the Holodeck materializes into the landscape of Efenia V the cadets are
greeted with the sound of buzzing insects and an odd creaking sound as the wind
moves the floating plants that make up a large portion of the flora of this planet.
The multicoloured floating spheres are tethered to the ground by twisted vines
which keep them from floating off. Scattered among them giant fungal growth like
terristrel coral just from the ground. In the distance a bang is heard as a sphere
reaches maturity and explodes scattering the area in fruit meat and seeds. The
whole area smells sickly sweet like the depths of a humid and hot jungle.

Ahead of them they can see the shape of the observation building, the door is
hanging open and it is clear that the scientists left in a hurry. Once inside they
see that they need to reset the power by adjusting the fuses, there are also some
eggs scattered on the floor near upended incubation chambers.
b. Description- The jungle that they transport into is vibrantly coloured with greens
and oranges. The primary flora are floating plants that are tethered to the ground
by vines. Most are about the size of a person with some larger ones, the largest
being the size of a car, they are oblong and have patterns like watermelons.
There are also fungal type growths the height of normal trees. The ground itself is
yellow and spongy.
The outpost itself is a small building with a variety of sensors sticking out of it, the
door is hanging open. Inside the building they see that it was obviously
abandoned in a hurry. Research stations are a mess and there is no power
anywhere.
c. Challenge 1- Reactivate Power
i. The first issue that becomes apparent is that the observation post has no
power. On the far side of the post a pair of fuse boxes are open isolinear
chips scattered about the floor. Someone will have to replace them in the
right order.
ii. A series of circuit boards in which they have a certain amount of parts the
parts will add charge, or remove charge. There are also portions of the
circuit board that are fixed and add or remove charge. If they complete
the circuit and the charge is wrong they may need to make an
engineering roll to prevent further damage. (Spiderman PS4 Circuit
minigame).
1. Perhaps a roll at the start to identify pieces. Reason+Engineering
every success gives you the charges for two of the pieces. This
gives the team a chance to split tasks, one is identifying pieces
and the rest can figure out the puzzles.
2. The puzzles are two fuse boxes, one has space for 7 fuses and
one has space for 8 fuses. Parentheses take up one space for the
set.
a. Pieces available these represent the fuses the away team
finds. If the Storyteller wants they can allow Reason and
engineering rolls to change the charge or strength of fuse
to make the challenge easier.
i. 2,2,3,3,4,8,-1,-4,-8,-4,2,6,10,3,-2,-1,-3,(),()
ii. 20=2(2+3-4+8+1) 7 slots
iii. 30=-3(3+4-6+1-8-4) 8slots
3. Difficulty can be raised or lowered depending on grade
level(Primarily its addition and subtraction, with logic puzzles to
make up for limited pieces). It also gives some measure of
algebraic thinking since they have a final amount of charge they
are trying to reach.
d. Challenge 2- Reconstruct food web data
i. As the power kicks on one of the computers reboots. It is flashing error
messages, someone had been inputting animal data and it has become
corrupted. It will need to be manually restructured.
ii. A computer check gets them some of the data off the mainframe but it
has been corrupted and now it needs some reassembly.
1. They have 13 animals to put into a rough food web.
a. Three insects
i. A beetle with a hard pearlescent shell, it lives off of
the decaying plant matter on the ground of the
jungle
ii. A large buzzing insect with a stinger and four
wings. It eats mainly other insects.
iii. Social Insect that lives in hives and is a polinator
b. Three Birds
i. 1 Eats seeds
ii. 1 eats insects
iii. 1 eats fruits
c. 2 arachnids
i. Eat insects
ii. 1 eats birds
d. 2 Reptiles
i. 1 eats insects
ii. 1 eats smaller reptiles and mammals
e. 3 Mammals
i. 1 herbivore
ii. 1 small insectivore
iii. 1 apex style predator
e. Challenge 3- Repair and refill incubation chambers-
i. In one corner someone has upended the labs incubation chambers and
scattered the eggs they contained throughout the area. Each of the three
chambers has a different environment and the team needs to figure out
which eggs go where so they can continue to incubate.
ii. there are several eggs on the floor they seem to have fallen out of one of
the three incubation chambers which are along one wall. The chambers
are broken and require engineering checks to repair. Once repairs they
each have very different settings. One is dry and warm, another is
temperate, the last is humid and dark with temperature varying across the
chamber.
iii. Egg type 1- A hard shelled bird type egg. It is green with light blue spots.
It goes in the temperate chamber
iv. Egg Type 2- a semi transparent rubbery egg like a snake. It goes in the
dry warm.
v. Egg type 3- Rubbery and white like a crocodilian egg it goes in the humid
and dark. The varying temperature will determine the gender of the
offspring
4. Scene 4- Roti III
a. Upon completion of the first three tasks they receive a message over the
communicator, “Prepare for transport to the next mission zone”. As they
rematerialize their lungs are instantly assailed by the gritty dry air of the new
planet. The atmosphere crackles with static and in the sky roiling with dark red
clouds lightning crackling between them. A tremor shakes the ground and they
can see silver rocks among the rust coloured sand. In the distance they see a
cave system tricorder readings are saying the seismic disturbances are
originating there.
b. Description: An Arid red planet planet with a thick atmosphere that limits visibility.
The upper atmosphere has terrible storms crashing around with lightning flashes
and swirling clouds. The ground around where they materialize is is streaked with
an obsidian like stone. They are near a cave system, and this is where their
scans show the seismic activity is coming from.
c. Challenge 1- Neutralize Atmospheric Toxin
i. The dust coating your lungs starts to burn and you realize that it is toxic,
you need to use the medical kit to synthesize an antitoxin and quickly.
ii. Algebra problem where they will have to calculate the proper amount of
anti toxin based on their weights. Something simple like 100=
x+30/Weight. They can use tricorders to determine their weights.
Reason+computers.
d. Challenge 2- Program Probe
i. Upon reaching the cave system it becomes obvious that there is no way
you will fit through the tunnels. To one side there is a shuttlecraft and a
small probe. You figure you can program the probe to navigate the
tunnels and search for the cause of the disturbances.
ii. Probe has a variety of simple commands that can be issued, but the
probe has to be programmed. This means they need to use sensors to
determine the route it must take and then program the probe to follow the
path. Possibly make it so they have to program a return trip for the probe
as well. If more difficulty is needed
1. Commands for the probe
a. Turn 15degrees(left and right)
b. Turn 90 degrees(Left and Right)
c. Rotate 180 degrees
d. Move forward 10 ft
e. Move backward 5 ft
f. Scan.
e. Challenge 3- Estimate Volume of Sphere Geode
i. The probe finds a large geode made of an unstable material, it is
emanating magnetic pulses that are causing the seismic issues. The team
needs to remove it from the planet.
ii. the probe discovers there is a geode that is causing magnetic pulsations
and disrupting a nearby faultline. They need to figure out if their shuttle
has enough space to remove the geode from the planet. The math on this
can be made more simple for lower grade levels, by having the tricorders
calculate the volumes and just have the players do the subtraction, and
comparison.
iii. The Geode is a sphere with an empty spherical space inside. To solve
this problem there are 4 steps.
1. Step 1 find out the volume of the total geode it has a radius of 3.06
2. Find the volume of the empty space it has a radius of 2.38
3. Subtract the volumes
4. Find the volume of the shuttlecraft cargo space a cube with a 4ft
edge.
5. Compare the numbers
5. Scene 5- Siana VI
a. The transporter initializes once more as the team is taken to the final of their
three challenges. They see a swamp filled with fog, giant mangroves jut out of
the water creating pathways large enough for three people to walk abreast.
Hanging from the branches vines and moss of all sorts can be seen. The sounds
of the swamp fill their ears groans of large water predators, and the buzz of
insects. They can smell the musty scent of an area that is always humid.
b. Description: The away team materializes in a foggy swamp with giant twisting
trees. The sounds of insects fill their ears and the sloshy of water is a
background sound. The large branch they are on is raised about 10 feet above
the water line. Initial scans show that the settlement is 1KM away, and they need
to beware of hunting parties.
c. Challenge 1- Classify Animals-
i. Their tricorder has given a variety of different animals in the area, the
team needs to classify them as part of the research. Starfleet categorizes
animals based on Mammal, Reptile, Bird, Insect, Arachnid, Fish, and a
few other main classifications.
ii. They can make sensors rolls to find different animal types and then they
have to classify them based on Mammal, Reptile, Bird, Insect, etc
1. First animal quadruped, fur, appears to give live birth, young are
milk fed.
2. Second Animal, exoskeleton 3 body segments, six legs,
multifaceted eyes.
3. Third Animal Six legs, fur, cold blooded, egg laying, three chamber
heart.
4. Fourth animal- Amphibious two chambered heart scales walking
fins
5. Fifth Animal- Terrestrial feathered crest hollow bones warm
blooded no wings,
6. Sixth Animal- Exoskeleton 2 body segments eight legs multiple
eyes apex predator
d. Challenge 2- Fight off the apex predator
i. The Tricorder sensors seem to have agitated a nearby predator! It is
bearing down on the away team and they will have to defend themselves!
ii. Talarian Hook Spider
1. Con 10 Dar 7 Fit 8 In 2 Pre 2 Rea 4
2. Com 1 Conn - Sec 3 Eng - Sci - Med -
3. Stress 11 Resistance 1
4. Attacks
a. Hook (Melee 4^ Knockdown)
b. Bite (Melee 5^ Intense, Deadly)
5. Special
a. Web- In an area covered with spider webs characters can
only move one zone per turn.
e. Challenge 3- Figure out how much phaser power it would take to carve out a
hiding place without destroying the tree. Damage caused by the dice are
additional temperature increases.
i. To finish the last test the away team needs to create a shelter that will
allow them to hide from the locals while continuing their research. Ideally
something created in the hollow of a tree while not killing the tree around
them.
ii. Tricorder tells them that the tree can not exceed 600C.
1. At power level 1 the phaser increases the temperature 100C per
second(Roll 1 effect die)
2. At power level 2 300C per second(roll 2 effect die)
3. At power level 3 600C per second (roll 3 effect die)
4. 4 and above the wood combusts instantly.(No longer carving but
the tree is on fire)
iii. They can use a cooling spray to cool the wood 250C per second, but only
have 3 sprays of it.
iv. They need to clear 15cuft for them to fit in the cubby. Each effect rolled on
the damage die will give them 3cuft of carved space.
v. Extended Task Work of 5 Magnitude of 3.
f. With the final task completed the holoprogram ends and the room returns to the
familiar yellow and black grid. Commander T’rel walks in “ Your performance was
adequate, we will begin assessments and inform you of your grades in the
coming days. Congratulations Cadets.

Returning to their dorm rooms, they are all excited waiting to see what ship they
will be assigned to.
6. Scene 6- Return to the Duty Officer for Assessment
a. The message has finally been received and they have their assignments. The
team packs their bags and heads to the shuttle bay. Tradition states that when
reporting to your duty station you do it the old fashioned way so that you can see
the ship.

The shuttle breaks the atmosphere of Earth and the view port fills with stars,
there in a stationary orbit is an older vessel. Its distinct design with four nacelles
letting the team know its a constellation-class. A hail comes over the com
system.
“This is LT Rodrigo, shuttle Anning you are clear to dock in the rear bay.
Welcome to the Dauntless”
b. They have succeeded in their mission and will be assigned to the USS Dauntless
under Capt Arix. The Dauntless is a Constellation class starship.
